Just keep it up, Tracy. One of these days you will go to the beach and find they are all big enough to look after themselves and you don't have to watch them every second, and then you have it and can read. If you stop bringing it, the you might end up in the situation Becky describes, and what would you do then? Nightmare!! ;)

May I suggest audiobooks? Then your hands and eyes are free.

Speaking of audiobooks... I just bought Lover Reborn and The Hobbit in audio today. I also desperately tried to find a decent audiobook to learn the Italian language with, but most of the language courses sound really irritating with awfully cheerful music and somewhat artificial dialog. Does anyone have any suggestions about Italian language audiobooks?

I can't do audiobooks. I zone them out (I do this to music, too, except that a nice pounding beat, even if I'm not really *listening*, will keep me going as I'm cleaning or whatever.) And then I zone back in when all the kids are there with me & it's in the middle of a not-so-safe-for-kids scene... *blush*

They may say the code is ending today, but they generally work through Wednesday or Thursday. Also, they run a code every weekend, so if you miss one, another will come along on Saturday! I think the smallest discount I've seen was 25%, and about once a quarter they run a 60% code.

I think my "banker" just put a voodoo curse on you, Becky... don't worry though, they never work. LoL!
I usually purchase books from the publisher, but when I catch a sweet deal I can't help but buy several at a time. This was my first time at fiction wise, now that I'm in the loop, well, "banker" and I will simply have to renegotiate my book budget.

I'm slutty. I go where the best deals are! A lot of my m/m came from Fictionwise. But I also have a fair size library at ARe. And I occasionally buy direct from Samhain or Riptide. (Riptide doesn't sell through Fictionwise, and Samhain doesn't participate in their discount program, so I usually find the best prices direct from the publisher when they're having a sale.) A smaller portion of my library comes from Amazon. Everyone gives me Amazon gift cards for my birthday and Christmas, plus I earn free ones every month through Swagbucks, so I always have a least a little book money on hand there. Most of the books I buy through Amazon are agency titles that no one can discount. I find myself spending a fair bit of my gift certificate money on Mother's Day/Father's Day/birthday presents, and the occasional song download for myself, too.

ETA: And what I started that post to say was that the banker should be thanking me! I just helped you save a whole bunch of money! :P

Maybe Josh could hire you to narrate some of his books in Italy? That would work for me better than any language course ever could. LOL. :)

Anyway, I decided to try an audiobook titled "Speak Italian With Confidence". As you can see I'm quite ambitious... *grin*

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Johanna wrote: "Speak Italian With Confidence..."

Confidence will take you a loooong way :D

Usually Italians will try anything to understand what you're saying. A course of mime together with the audiobook should do the trick ;-)

My mom once met a lovely German lady who wanted to communicate in some way, but there was no language they had in common. Still to make her feel welcome, my mom asked her "Sprik zee doitsch" and after her new friend enthusiastically said "ja, ja", mom added very sorry "tsk, io no" (I don't)

That is so true - you Italians do try anything to communicate with us non-Italians! :) Your mom sounds just like some of my older Italian friends (already retired) in Firenze and Sesto Fiorentino! They don't speak English as well as the younger ones, but it doesn't stop them one bit to communicate. :) And the language barrier doesn't dilute our friendship even the slightest. Every time we meet it's a wild mess of body language with a lot of beckoning with hands... them speaking Italian with some English and me speaking every language I know all mixed up. *grin* So luckily I'm quite good in mime already. LOL!

Oh Manu, just now you made me miss Italy so much!!!

Antonella | 11565 comments Some years ago my brother made home exchange with Danish friends of mine, who speak only Danish and English. His very Italian neighbour, who spoke only Italian, managed to invite them for a meal. All of us still wonder how did it work. Apparently very well: the Danish people were for sure delighted.

Johanna, there are lots of places were you can learn/hear Italian on the Internet. I could send you a list. Does it have to be an audiobook?

My advice is also to focus on things you like, for ex. listen to songs of Italian singers as you read the lyrics, or to use the original version of Italian movies on DVD getting some help from the *Italian* subtitles (yes, Italian, not Finnish!).

You are absolutely right, of course. I could do that right now! *runs to put her Laura Pausini CD on* But the Italian movies with Italian subtitles... wow, you would make a strict teacher... ;)

No, it doesn't have to be an audiobook. You could make a list of those sites? That would be so kind! And afterwards - when I have learned to speak some Italian with confidence I can come and give it a test drive in M/M Italia site... ;)

The important thing is that you begin all your dialogs with: "Parlo Italiano con sicurezza" :-P

Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments I just finished Casket of Souls by Lynn Flewelling. I loved it. Reading her stories feels like coming back home. She was my introduction of mainstream fantasy that includes an LGBT couple.

I devoured this last book. It took me a few days to finish it but those awesome pages were well worth the sleepless nights. I am a huge fan of the Beka Cavish, Klia, Micum and Thero but Alec and Seregil are still my first love.

Didn't know it was out yet, yay! off to buy. :) I have a long standing love affair with Alec and Seregil and the rest of the cast as well.

I have been reading some of the stories in the Love Is Always Write event in the m/m romance group. Kaje Harper has a very beautiful historic piece, Oco has a fun little piece with a very real voice of the 1. person POV, and I found a new writer (new for me that is) KD Sarge who has a great story too. There are more there of course, so I am going to explore further. Always nice to revisit old friends or find new ones. And of course, there will be some I will check out and never visit again, but hey- these are free stories, a good way to find out what I like and what I dislike.

I'm currently reading Catch Me If You Can by L.B. Gregg and she sure makes me grin a lot. ;) And that's exactly what I need right now. I haven't read her books before, but I certainly will in the future!

Not so good experience for me was the latest Sookie Stackhouse Deadlocked that I listened in audio. I don't know why I keep reading this series!? I guess it somehow would feel bad to give up reading it, because I loved the series in the beginning, but the few latest books have been so lame, the plot all over the place and the story really getting nowhere that I truly don't know if I have the courage to keep on witnessing the slow and painful death of the series I once liked so much. :(

I have enjoyed the L.B. Gregg books I have found. She has a series called Men of Smithfields or some such that I haven't been able to find again (they used to be on Amazon). Does anybody know what happened and if they are available at all?

I feel the same about the Sookie Stackhouse books, Johanna. I have heard that she is wrapping up the series in one or two books, so I will stick around to the bitter end I think since I liked the first - and the idea - so much, but the last ones are not very good.

To Calathea, thanks for the tip, I will check it out.

Thanks for the tip, Anne! I didn't find Men of Smithfield books on Amazon either, except a book called "Men of Smithfield: Mark and Tony" for preorder (going to be published August 6, 2012). I suppose it's the fifth book of the series?

It's funny how comfort reading works almost every time, isn't it? And one can always increase the effect with some (or a lot of) ice cream or/and chocolate. :)

J.L. Merrow and Ethan Day could work for me, I think. They both have a bit similar feeling to their stories, don't they. I added Hard Tail into my to-read list. Thanks, Manu. :)

And yes, Vic and Jacob definitely do the trick every time for me. Just like Adrien and Jake. Wild Bill and Michael. Kit and J.X. - Hey, I just realized that Josh and JCP are my comfort read number ones! :) Anyway, I'm really counting Swift and Max to do it this time, because I'm (still!) waiting for the paper version of Come Unto These Yellow Sands to arrive here to the back of beyond... ;)

I was fortunate enough to purchase the Men of Smithfield Series off of Fictionwise, but the books are no longer listed there. Looks like, when I do a search, that her original publisher, Aspen Mountain Press, went out of business last October, so she may be trying to find another publisher to re-release the series eventually. In fact, the one that someone mentions in this thread, Mark and Tony, has the main characters from Gobsmacked This series was originally published in 2009.
