Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments On the other hand I sometimes wish for a world where that didn't matter one little bit, that the only thing one should care about is whether the book is well written, the characters interesting, the plot believable and the whole story leaving you with an impact on your emotions. For me that is much more important than the plumbing of the protags.;)I guess I have been a little bit naïve..

Yes, that's my wish as well, and no, you are not! :)

Kate, have you read Knight's stories w/the five guys who are like a gay compilation of 007? I ask because I didn't care for what I read of them, but the synopsis for the above story is tempting. Did you like Knight's other stuff? Sapphire sounds more appealing to me partly because it's one guy instead of five. Thoughts?

I've been off line for awhile, but have some solid recs.
ON THE TRAIL OF MOONLIGHT GULCH, by Shelter Somerset? I think is her name. I can't remember why 'cause it's been a few weeks, but I remember I really liked it.

WHISTLE PASS, by KavaD. Ooh, a winner. And nothing else by him/her on Amazon looked of any interest to me, but this was really fun and nicely done.

CHASE OF A LIFETIME, by Ryan Field. Don't groan. I know what he writes and, though I enjoy the idea of gay versions of famous movies, Field's execution is generally way too faithful and boring. In fact, I can't say I've liked anything else by this author. Yet "Chase" I just loved.
First off, it ultimately--Excuse me. This one is his version of The Graduate--went its own way and in a direction that both surprised and delighted me. Add to that, there was no hollering across the church at the end which I was frankly dreading. Also, if you remember the scene where Mrs. Robinson initially attempts to seduce Benjamin? Maybe I wasn't old enough, but I didn't find the scene in the movie anywhere near as funny as I did in the book. It was a real hoot.

Right now, I'm catching up on all the Lucius Parhelion stories which I have not yet read. They're all good. Some are just great.

Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments I just finished I, Iago A Novel by Nicole Galland by Nicole Galland. I just love her stuff and this one, I believe, may be my favorite book of hers. I was blown away. I am not all that knowledgeable about Shakespeare, but I enjoyed this book nonetheless. It's a must read for those that like well researched historical fiction. :)

In the final week of the school, despite report cards and the rest of it I managed to fit in Mnevermind and finish Boystown 4: A Time For Secrets, which except for a particular unresolved case could actually be a very satisfying end to that series. Tears eminent but still pending. I loved the last page.

For some reason, apparently pent on challenging myself emotionally, I'm reading darker stuff this week. Midway through Harper Fox's Last Line. That's a tough read, despite a long list of John le Carré in my past and appreciating The Island.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I'm reading Over the Mountain of the Moon: A Tale of a Samurai Consort, hystorical, set in Japan, so romantic, a slower pace than I'm used to, but sometimes that's good too. It has such a dreamy atmosphere, I'm losing myself in it, even if the main characters are crying a bit too much, and the POV's changing could have been handled a bit better. Anyway, it's different.

I'm going to start Hard Tail in a few minutes. I have high hopes for this one. I know there's a cat. I adore cats.

I enjoyed Hard Tail, and the cat is a real personality :) I like all of her books, my favourite so far is the first I read Pricks and Pragmatism. That is one of those I read more than once. You will actually meet the MC in that one in Hard Tail in a cameo. That was fun, to see them from the outside so to speak.

You wouldn't be the first. I don't read the AE fic though because I wouldn't want to be accused of plagiarising the fan fic if somewhere down the line I did write another story! That would be just too ironic.

Anne | 6816 comments I am working my way through Nicole Kimberling's Bellingham mysteries series. They are very fun, clever little mysteries and very likeable protags. Just the right thing in this wonderful, very unseasonal warm weather we are having. I even went to the beach and swam in the Oslo fjord today, it was cold but refreshing. I can't tell how lovely it is to finally let the body feel the sun, the wind and the sea after being wrapped up in wool for more than half a year. We tend to go a little crazy when summer finally hits, so there will be some burned noses when the holiday is over :)

I think it was this line from Andrew's letter that brought the term "mother tincture" to mind:

I don't know what more there is to say, except this: that since one can't refuse to know oneself, and it must have happened eventually, I would rather it was through you than anyone else.

I tried. Stuff kept coming up. But today -- as soon as I finish checking the outposts of my empire -- I'm signing off. As was bluntly pointed out to me yesterday, I spend practically as much time on the computer as I did when I was writing, so it's no surprise my wrists have not recovered.

Anne | 6816 comments So a day is already a perfect day when a new Josh Lanyon is for sale, even before I get to read it, the anticipation and waiting to finish work and go home to enjoy, like waiting for Christmas. So after reading Perfect Day I just have to say, thank you for this lovely little story. It kept me on my toes all throughout until the last page, hardly daring to guess where it would end. So much emotion packed into so little space. Wonderful!

Has everyone heard Lou Reed's Perfect Day? I "bit" darker than this story of course, but some elements of similar uncertainty.

I agree with Anne. Lots of emotions. I could identify with lots of them.

At first I wondered why didn't Josh write something longer on the base of this good idea. Now I think the story it's just perfect as it is, which is quite rare for short stories where one is often left wondering about characters/plot and in general wanting more.

Thank you, Josh!

Have you gotten to The Kiss yet? (I don't want to say anything specific, but once you've read The Kiss you'll know exactly what I was talking about. It's like saying "that one line at the end of Dark Tides"- everyone who's read it knows what you mean.) Anyway, yes. Awesome kiss!

Yes Becky, oh yes!
I can get pretty nit-picky when reading, but Hot Heads was one in which I just didn't care about the flaws. Could it be simply because Griff was so unbelievably hot? In a kilt? Am I that shallow?
Meh.
Funny how it's easy to rate flawless books, simply based on level of enjoyment. Then trying to justify rating a piece less tightly written, that you just loved, on the same scale... I'm sure there was a discussion about this in here somewhere...

Anne | 6816 comments I have just started on Astrid Amara's The Archer's Heart. It takes a little to get into it, which I find is always the case with epic fantasy since the first pages always have to establish the world and the people, but it seems very promising.

Cheryl | 232 comments Ann, I recently read The Archer's Heart, and I had some trouble getting into it as well. There is a pretty large cast of characters and you're introduced to almost all of them in the first chapter, so it's hard to keep track of everyone.

I just read Cruce de Caminos which isn't really a romance, it's a paranormal erotic horror story setting you up for a romance that's going to be published in a few months. The writing is wonderful and entrancing, draws you right in and doesn't let you out.
