The first version of the Kindle cover with a booklight did something wonky. I think it got its power from the Kindle's battery and shorted them out or something. As far as I know, the problem has been resolved on later versions of the cover.

Becky wrote: "I'd never heard of Turning Idolater before, and now the sample is on my Kindle because you recommend it so highly. If I'd stumbled across it outside this group I would have given it a pass. The cover copy is uninspiring at best. There are lots of reasons that books find their audience or don't. My guess is that the blurb is turning people away."

I was thinking more about word of mouth. But, yeah, the cover is bad, but the blurb is light years away from the book. It makes it sound cheap, when the book is anything but.

I hope you'll enjoy the book as much as I did. Hoarder? Welcome to the club. XD

message 7812: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments I have a small room for storage in the basement of the house I live in, and one day I had a look inside to see if there was room to store the winter wheels of my car. There was not. And why is that? Because in addition to my daughter's old doll house and two sacks of Lego bricks and a few cans of paint, it was filled with books. App. 40 years' worth of hoarding books. I am completely unable to throw books away.

Not to mention the shelves in the living room, the study and the guest room, filled to the roof with books (and I have a very high ceiling). And books on my Kindle. And the ones that are stored on my computer. And the ones stored in the Amazon cloud.

So I think I should apply for a part in the reality show Hoarders R'Us :)

No one -- and I do mean NO ONE is born knowing all this stuff. The fact that I know anything at all is due to years and years of working my craft and having the advantage of some very good editors (back in the day when big publishing house editors could take the time to nurture new talent).

Currently reading Nikki Kimberling's One Man's Treasure (Bellingham Mystery, #4) by Nicole Kimberling

I spotted it when I turned my Kindle on to download Jordan's Magic Mansion. That's what I mean about being a hoarder. I couldn't wait to read it but once it was downloaded, safely hoarded on my kindle, I wandered off to find the next thing to download.

Anyway, what a treat to revisit this world and these characters. 7% in and I had chuckled about seven times already. That's a chuckle for every percent! ;-P

I lend books, then fill in the empty spaces, then when I get the books back ... I panic. I read more than 300 e-books last year, can you imagine having to store them? *shudders*

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ wrote: "I lend books, then fill in the empty spaces, then when I get the books back ... I panic."

That happens to me with my art books. During the school year I carry piles and piles of them to work and when the school year is about to end I panic, because the books are all over the four art classrooms we have... and I'm sure, I won't find them all and at that point I swear that I'm never going bring my own books to school again. And the second time when the panic hits is the moment when I'm back at home with the huge pile and standing in front of my bookshelf. ;)

... and next autumn it all starts again. :)

What's a parsimonious person to do?

It's not Amazon's fault the ebook's price is so ridiculous, it's the publisher's. Many big publishers plan to keep ebook' price high enough so people keep buying the print ones.

There was an episode this season about a guy who was a book hoarder. He had 30,000. By the end of the show I believe he was down to 6,000.

Back when were were moving every year or two, I had 3K books. No kidding. In the move from Hagerstown to Cumberland, I pared that down to 1K because we were moving into a smaller space and from that point forward, any book that wasn't an autobuy author was immediately donated to the public library. I've added a great many nonfic books since then and have added books signed by friends at cons...I couldn't begin to tell you how many I have now. Enough for my books to have a dedicated room. (In my defense, they are shelved...just not in a way any human being besides me would ever possibly understand, LOL.) But these days, I get snarly if I can't buy it in digital. I still prefer my history collections and research books in paper, though.

I vote for Book Sluts. The title of said show should be book related.

I guess I'm doing good. Well, growing up a good friend of mine's family was a hoarding family. Knowing that I've only seen her livingroom couch once, the one time I was able to get into the livingroom to begin with, keeps me in line. And that includes books too. I just took four back to the used book store. Of course, I went and bought about 8 in return, so I've still got more than I had. But still. I take a really good look at what I have. If I'm not going to want to reread it again, then it has to go. I donate my MM to the library and make sure they get into the circulating collection, so that there's more MM for patrons to read, even if it's a book I hated. I just hate the fact that there's not enough MM in the collection, as much as there is het romance.

Tracy (tracykitn) | 461 comments How does one tell for sure that one is a book hoarder? I mean, I know I haven't been able to simply delete those ebooks I either didn't like enough to ever reread or simply didn't enjoy enough to finish. But I also have 7(ish) bookcases -- double stacked -- of dead tree books. The only room in the house with no bookcase is the kitchen, only because there's no room (there *is*, of course, a selection of actual books scattered through the kitchen. A couple of them are even cookbooks.)

What was Becky's term? SELE -- stash exceeds life expectancy? We should make up a list, like the You Might be a Redneck schtick. Except it'd be, You Might Be a Book Slut if...

...you have the most extensive collection of books (any specific genre or topic) in the tri-county area, including bookstores and libraries (bonus points if college libraries are in your Zone of Utter Domination).

...you have ever wedged a bookshelf into a closet.

...you have bought the same book three times because you forgot you already had it.

etc, etc.

>:D

message 7843: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracykitn) | 461 comments I live in Georgia; I'm pretty sure I have the most extensive private collection of BOOKS in the non-Atlanta-metro-area part of the state.

And, um...does it count if you've deliberately bought multiple copies of the same book, *knowing* you already have at least two copies on your shelves? In my defense, that third copy was a kinda ratty old used paperback for my daughter so she'd stop using my personal "for reading" paperback... and the "main" copy of that particular book is nearly a century old (I can only guess the owner of that particular book store was less concerned with the price and more with finding a good home for his books; it's a Louisa May Alcott, dated (I think) 1915 or thereabouts, and he let me have it for $25. I LOVE that bookstore. Like, lots and lots.)

message 7845: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracykitn) | 461 comments I will say my paper collection is maybe a third the size of my mom's, but I refuse to think hers counts, because most of it is stuff she picked up for free, has no intention of ever actually reading, and stores it all in the attic where she never goes. Theoretically, once my brother finds a new place (his last apartment building burned) Dad's going to turn his bedroom into a library w/ floor-to-ceiling bookcases, but... well, Dad talks a good game, but he's not always so great at the follow-through part.

message 7846: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments I do the same thing as Tracy.
I have books in every room of the house. My nightstand has about ten paper books and my Nook, and there is a basket full of books on the floor next to my side of the bed.

I am a bit like a hummingbird with books, I go from one to the next to the next and finish them on a whim. I am very undisciplined.

I have a bookcase in my dining room. The top half doubles as a china cabinet, but the bottom shelves have books -- classics, mysteries and cookbooks. DH keeps trying to get me to choose a real china cabinet. I keep telling him that it's because I'm just very picky and don't see anything I like, but really it's because if I got a real china cabinet, I would have to move the books to a different room.
