Antonella | 11565 comments As a non-Catholic, non-religious Italian ;-) I'm just borrowing the Lent idea, that is to do things differently for 7 weeks. Especially things that IMO would be good for me, but I have a certain resistance to overcome to do them. Like avoid reading till 2 or 3 a.m. or start the books I already bought instead of keeping buying new ones.

Last year I also had another Lent resolution: to write down at the end of the day three good things in my life, just to be more aware of them.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments I'm feeling remarkably unmotivated to read right now. I have another project I should be working on, and every time I pick up my Kindle I feel guilty. Also, I read Frat Boy and Toppy last weekend and really enjoyed it. Sometimes when I read something really fun it puts me in a bit of a reading funk, because nothing else looks quite as appealing.

So I'm not really reading anything right now. But I'm glad you mentioned Scrap Metal. Stupid Samhain can't get it together to send out reminders when a pre-ordered book becomes available for download. Who knows how long it would have taken me to remember to check on my own? And I really like Harper Fox. I foresee more post-book reading funk in my future.

I read The Court of Silver Shadows by Beatrice Brandon yesterday. I've had it on my bookshelf for a decade or so. I'm sorry to say it turned out to be a disappointment. One of those mysteries where there is simply no believable motivation for the crime -- in this case any of the crimes.

I find that's generally one of the glaring weaknesses in mystery and crime novels. The number one reason people kill is gain. It may be dull in fiction, but it's grounded in reality and you won't go wrong sticking to a recognizable reality.

But so many writers resort to extravagant revenge plots or madness (serial killers, for example) and so often they fall flat.

I like that idea. I'm so not Catholic nor religious, but it's a neat idea. And it's not a year long one like most people make on New Year's so it's more likely to stick. You try it for a few weeks at first and then... yup, I kinda like it.

The Starving Years is fabulous! I'd like a good excuse to buy it whole and read it all at once. lol. I'll have to go through my updated wishlist and make a suggestion over on the other thread.

I just finished our current read then reread In Sunshine or In Shadow twice over the weekend and last night I reread In A Dark Wood again.

I'm supposed to be reading a few YA books, plus I've been reading
Branded, which is good, but I'm thinking not as good as I'd have liked. However, I'm not too far into it yet, so we'll see.

I can't discuss how often is enough for you, but a little bird told me that you are going to Italy ;-)

I'm loving ''Scrap Metal'' just as I loved everything else by Harper Fox. The added bonus here for the former Celtic buff (=moi) is the setting in Scotland, the Scottish Gaelic language bits and so on...

And I had the same feeling about ''Branded''. I notice now I haven't written a review, and I've read it last year.

message 7420: by Charming (new)

Charming (charming_euphemism) I've been on a little fanfic binge ever since Cleon sent me some of her HPDM favs. And today CarvedWood recommended a bunch more over at MMR. So my budget is very happy, but I am actually behind on reading books I've bought. I have a TBR folder on my kindle, and it covers more than one page. This never happens to me.

message 7421: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Congrats on never having a long TBR folder Charming! You know, that actually sounds like a great idea for my Kindle. I might have to do that myself.

I was going to buy another fountain pen for finishing NaNoEdMo early/on time and changed my mind because I've had books sitting on my Amazon wishlist for a very long time. So I spent a few hours last night going through them, changing some to Kindle books now that I have one and can save money on them, and totally the price. Well, I won't be buying all of them right now, but a good portion, yes.

The key though? I HAVE to finish the four fiction books on my currently reading list. The one book has been there for over a year and that's just sad. Plus, it's written by one of my fav authors, so I can't let it sit there any longer.

OMG, there are too many books I have to read ASAP, it's gonna drive me nuts!

I started Harper's Scrap Metal by Harper Fox last night. I'm only about 5% of the way and my God she captures the cold and the wet and the weariness. It was a relief to snuggle into the warm blankets and go to sleep. :-D

message 7424: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments This is an amazing book, so beautiful. The story is simple enough, but she takes the weather, the seasons, the farmland, the landscape and the sea, the poetry of languages and art and even the farm animals and the Aga (!) and weaves such a rich and colourful tapestry, with the muted but deep colours of the Scottish countryside and the downplayed but also deep emotions of the Scottish lads. This one is going onto the re-read once a year list for sure.

I have to say this is one of the best things about sabbatical. For years I've been promising myself time to read for fun and that time has come. And I have thousands of books here to choose from because of years of collecting vintage paperbacks and then there's all the stuff on my Kindle!

It really does feel like the kid locked inside the candy store.

LOL! IMO your brain is acting spontaneously on the ground of the excellence of the books of hers you already read. If it would be her, then she would direct you to JPC Books, not to Amazon ;-).

I've already got everything except ''The Starving Years'', but I plan to fix that after Easter.

Vivian (viv001) | 606 comments I am reading Kushiel's Chosen, the second book of the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. I must say that I was hooked by the idea of a God that has an inherent sadistic nature and all the politics and intrigues in the first book, Kushiel's Dart

I am also well steeped in medieval literature and myths and I like how she has weaved in the myths of the early nations of Europe in her plot lines. Perhaps it may prove a bit annoying for other readers, but I was fascinated.

Yes, but what? My attention span is virtually nonexistent at the moment, so anything particularly long or complex is out, including mysteries (I'm bad at picking up on clues *anyway,* no need to compound the problem). That also lets out all the best fantasy/sci-fi. All the history in our house is military and that will REALLY make things worse, all things considered. And all my YA-type stuff is either dark & dystopian or all kinds of Old-Fashioned Happy Families, which is *nearly* as disgusting as Happy Couples.

I suppose there's always the boys' Dinosaur Encyclopedia. At the very least, it should help me sleep for a few days.

Hmmm. A couple books that I've read recently and were good but not Happy Couple-y are Frat Boy and Toppy, Urban Shaman, Riot Boy, and Bad Boyfriend. (I feel a little bad recommending a book that inched out Josh's Come Unto These Yellow Sands in the DABWAHA competition, but it really was an entertaining book.) And as far as YA goes, have you read Hex Hall? I enjoyed that and the second book Demonglass quite a bit.

Read 3 of the first four, and they kinda ended up Happy Couples-y, honestly. Thanks for the YA recommendations, tho; I'll see if my library has them. (I'll be honest; I'm in a bit of a difficult mood right now.
