Tracy (tracykitn) | 461 comments Just dabbling at re-reads right now, but I got it into my head to dig out my copy of Die for Love by Elizabeth Peters (which, yeah, kinda stole *ahem* borrowed from my mom ages ago.) Hysterical murder-at-a-romance-convention, with all the types you'd expect to find (including a Fabio wanna-be, complete with shirt open to navel and flowing locks of hair!)

Yes! When I need lighthearted, I almost always head for Peters's Jaqueline Kirby books (I like Amelia Peabody, but I kinda ran out of steam halfway through the series) or for Sharyn McCrumb. I love Bimbos of the Death Sun (Jay Omega, #1) by Sharyn McCrumb . And her Ballad novels are *gorgeous* but not light.

Actually, it's very bad, Antonella. My credit card is screaming in pain, and my WIP feels terribly neglected!

You'll have to let me know what you think of it. I liked it, but not as much as I'd hoped I would. And that's all book character references aside. lol. I only read it to enjoy it. I wasn't checking the facts to see if they were correct, as you already know.

I took a break from M/M to read YA, and then immediately went back to M/M and started to reread GhosTV again last night. I don't know what that means, or what I'll be reading tonight. Guess I'll find out later.

I was disappointed with it, to be honest. But I thought it was well-written and well-researched. I initially feared I was going to be treated to reworked Sherlock Holmes fan fiction, but it didn't go that way (to my great relief).

The things I didn't like about it are entirely subjective, so if I were to review it, I would certainly give it five stars.

It's unlikely I'll buy anything else by her though.

message 7067: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
I think I gave it four. And yeah, what I didn't like was subjective too. Kind of minor, over all.

I'm now back to reading this really interesting nonfic book: Gay Bar: The Fabulous, True Story of a Daring Woman and Her Boys in the 1950s This story still amazes me. I'm hoping nothing else will get in the way of me finishing it. It's such a skinny book, I should have finished it by now! lol.

Christopher | 137 comments I've just re-read Josh's Doyle and Spain novel, 'Snowball in Hell'.

I think this is right up there with The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks as my favourite of Josh's works.

There's just so much pain in the Nathan Doyle character, it's lovely to read. (That makes me sound like a complete sadist doesn't it?)

It's also the most angst filled of Josh's backlist, although it's not the least bit overdone or melodramatic. I love a bit of angsty goodness, but often it's used so liberally that it feels as if the author is emotionally manipulating the reader in a bad way rather than a good way. Not in this case however.

I also have a soft spot for novels set in the Hollywood Golden Age, which this depicts wonderfully.

I really want to read the rest of this series.

I'm now in the process of re-reading to enable me to wring out every drop of Lanyony goodness to satisfy my insatiable need.

Antonella | 11565 comments K.Z. wrote: "Josh, what's the status of Out of the Blue? Will you be getting it back from Liquid Silver and reissuing?"

... with the right end pages?

Anyway: there is no story discussion on ''Out of the Blue''! Someone should do something!

And we were discussing covers somewhere here: I've just taken the anthology Esprit de Corps by Victor J. Banis in my hands and noticed:

1) the fella is taking a shower
2) but what has he got in his hand near his ear?
3) *looks better* Headphones with cord?!? Does he want to be electrocuted?
4) and what's behind him? *perplexed* Strange shower...
5) *looks better* It's a cockpit!

Well, no one can say the cover doesn't relate to the novels ;-). Just the logic of a dripping wet fella in a cockpit is somehow flawed...

NB: my previous assumption was that I do look at covers, but only the covers of paper books. Extenuating circumstances: I had waited ages to get the anthology, because back then I still insisted on getting books on paper if possible, so for sure I didn't look that long to the cover once I got the book.

I've never had that amount of self control!

I'm the same with food. Leave me alone in a room with a box of chocolates or a plate of cupcakes, and pretty soon I'll be stuffing one after another of them into my mouth in an attempt to hit the pleasure centre of my brain again and again and again.

It didn't used to be so bad when I ordered paperbacks from Amazon. I could exert delayed gratification then. But with the possibility of downloading with one click...

I do plan on a sequel. It was too complex to tackle while I was so tired and burnt out. And in fact I may do a simpler novella before I tackle the big Japanese internment story.

Also, I'm just reading his contribution to the Irregulars. Almost finished w/it I think, and I think it's smashing. I must admit, I miss Josh--not saying he shouldn't enjoy his sabatical.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I'm currently doing two years of taxes so the sabbatical is less enjoyable than it might be. But after we get this finished, I do plan to delve back into that huge, enticing pile of TBR.

Don't worry, it's only the last two pages* and only in the paper edition.

And it's not so bad: it's just that if one reads the ''right'' one, that one is much better. If you don't know, you don't notice it.

Well, it's an ending that some readers find abrupt as is, so the earlier draft version that made its way into the first print edition is probably going to jar.

They're great. Another one of those books with characters that get under your skin and make you think about them and care about them. Joe and Kabe have such distinctive voices.

While I was down at my folks for the funeral, my little brother was reading Ace Frehley's autobiography/KISSstory, No Regrets by Ace Frehley . I snagged it, read a bit, thought it was interesting (although somewhat whiny, but that's Ace, LOL) so checked Kindle. $12.99. Ow. Wasn't that in love with it. Ended up getting KISS Behind the Mask The Official Authorized Biography by Ken Sharp for $9.99 instead. Interesting if you're a fan. The first half was written in '79, before they'd all become products. I'm about halfway through it. Was worth my $10, even as an ebook. Of course, my opinion about that might largely be in part to the hardcover price being set at $45. Ow. Seriously? o.O No. LOL. Paperback's cheaper of course, but...*shrug*
