I finished Sticks & Stones the week before I started Icecapade. I, too, had difficulty with the head-hopping between Ty and Zane in Cut & Run, so I didn't know what to expect from S&S. However, I loved Sticks & Stones. I thought that book did a tremendous job of combining action with the men's feelings. Throwing in Ty's father and brother and the issues and challenges they brought to the story really added depth to the book. It also introduced Ty's brother and the conflicted feelings he has about his role in Ty and Zane's lives in reporting to their boss.

I look at the series as being similar to AE as well as Dangerous Ground. There is a time-line that the authors have set up. The men started their relationship by falling into bed and it was based largely on lust. These guys have to work backwards from the lust and establish a believable relationship. That alone is going to involve talking and baring of souls. But it is a process because neither one of the guys is very good about exposing their emotions or being in touch with those feelings, let alone talking about it. This is similar to the relationship Adrien had with Jake. It's going to be a roller-coaster of action and talking.

Fish & Chips is next on my list to read. I already know I'll be looking forward to book 4 because I want to see how Zane's feelings for Ty develop and what new obstacles the authors put in place for the development of their relationship.

Hey Bubbles:D I just finished Tooth&Nails.Really good book but the ending was a bit confusing and wonder what happened to that Kyrie-Raphael? I thought he'd occur more because of the way he ran off.And Jael said he may come back 4 more blood. Guess it's a hint for sequel :D
Now about Malic-I tried but couldn't hate him :). Not even a bit. He was Hard or asshole outside but inside he's very soft and kind hearted which is why he always gave priority to other's safety over his own safety.

Sorry to intrude, but I made the comment on Mary's blog that Raph was an intriguing character; she replied that she had plans for him-I think that's why the issue of the Kyrie was left unresolved in Tooth & Nail.

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) Thanks Mary I don't remember Raph honestly I am awful with characters names and usually have my own names for them which aren't always nice but I will for sure read more in the series, Just hope the M/C is not an asshats like in Tooth and Nail

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I've just finished Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale. It's a dark, intense book with two incredible characters and it's set in an original world, where I've been living the last couple of days. I can't shake it off of me.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Bubbles (Dane) wrote: "Emanuela i liked book one of Wicked Gentlemen but I did not like book two because i just couldn't get into Harper's POV"

It took me a few pages to get accustomed to it. Usually the third person POV puts some distance between the reader and the character and after Belimai I was afraid Harper would seem colder, but I found it was an "intimate" third person POV. But I can understand that you may have found it less compelling.

message 666: by Bubbles Hunty (new)

Bubbles Hunty Honest & Direct Opinions (vapidbubbles) yeah and there was no mystery in the second one, you knew right away who the “bad guys” were so nothing kept me in the story. The only parts I liked were the parts with the Demon and he was only in it for about 20% of the story

Bella, I think Josh was responding to many remarks, not just your initial post. Look at the discussion you got going though!"

Oh. Yes! I'm late on responding, but I wasn't really thinking so much about Bella's comments as comments I hear in general -- not even necessarily about my stories (although I think a lot of romance readers feel my stuff isn't romancey enough--which is fine with me)!

We all like different elements in our stories. I'm not a mushy person, so I'm not likely to write that kind of scene myself. I mean, I'll try to write what feels realistic and powerful to me, but it's obviously not going to be to everyone's taste.

Patty, you brought up some great points here. I think sometimes new writers -- even readers -- confuse dialog with content. The characters can talk a lot -- some guys are very talkative. It's the content of the conversation that often rings a false note with me.

That said, some guys are articulate about their feelings -- sometimes the guys you'd least expect, as a matter of fact. And sometimes the sensitive, normally articulate ones are the least able to talk about their emotions.

I think if it all stays true to the characters and to the dynamic the writer has set up, it's good. What I object to is ordinary guys who've spoken like ordinary guys through and entire book and they suddenly turn into Browning or Keats and start spouting elaborate and flowery sentiment.

There's almost a generic romantic voice some authors take on for the end of their stories. Everyone sounds sort of the same as they make their declarations.

I think the difficulty was Bel...ACK! Can't remember the spelling, but his voice is so vivid and his character is so strong that when we lose it from the story, it does *feel* like a loss.

I like Harper and I did definitely want insight into what was going on with him, and I thought the switch to 3rd was a good one, but I did miss Bel...'s voice.

Not quite sure she could have told the story any other way, though.

That's okay. We can't all like the same stuff all the time. Every book isn't right for every reader -- as much as we writers always hope we've somehow bypassed that truth. ;-)

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I am often drawn to the less likable characters (for example I loved Adrien, but I could forgive Jake anything, and I liked I couldn't really get into his head). I felt the same for Harper: he makes his living in an institution (the Inquisition) and his life should be driven by rules, but he's not framed in it, he's attracted to and he longs for the dark side. Dane, maybe it's the sort of hypocrisy he lives in that you are not able to like.

If you decide to read the series, tell us. I'd love to discuss it. I enjoyed it very much. I thought it was very clever. Especially considering that the author does not seem to be a professional author.

Thanks, Josh. The first thing that caught my eye, besides the cool cover, was the author's name! I like "Ginn." That sounds like it should be a character's name.

If I've been following the discussion (and the truth is, I've had to skim- rapidly), the books must shift from 1st person POV to 3rd? One of my all-time favorite stories is the fantasy series The Queen's Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. Ms. Turner shifts in each of her 4 books from 1st person POV of the main protagonist, to 3rd person in the next book, back to 1st person, and in the 4th book, she shifts again to 1st person of a different protagonist. It sounds confusing; however, as you say, it works. And really well. Because all the stories revolve around the "Queen's Thief" the other characters provide a hugely unique perspective on Euginides, the thief. The story arc is totally his. It is an extremely well-written series, full of twists and surprises not of the m/m sub-genre, but one of fantasy, mystery, and gentle romance that I can't recommend enough. The Thief,The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, A Conspiracy of Kings

Em I will tell you it is a very very rough ride and you only get a HFN ending and well everything you think you know in the book is wrong. The M/C is very biased in what he shows you in his flash backs and makes you feel bad for him but don’t he is a total assface even though he presents himself as this sweet innocent victim he is not
