I just this morning got my new eReader (I'm rather fond of the Sony; don't judge!) and I've been charging it and setting it up and playing with it and Calibre. I'm going to give the old one to my DD -- she's only 11, but I have a fair bit of YA & classics that she can read, and it *doesn't* have WiFi, so she can't sneak around buying stuff she's Not Allowed to Read Yet. :D I WAS going to give the old one to my sister, but all her ebooks are Kindle versions on her computer, so I may just see if Mom wants to go halfsies with me on a Kindle for Sis for her birthday in April. Anyway...now I get all the fun of learning my way around. Just have to decide which of my massive pile of books old & new that I haven't yet read to start with... *happySnoopyDance of glee*

I have a REALLY strong rec! The Island by Lisa Henry. What a great surprise. She's very smart, this Henry. There's a prisoner, horribly abused and a businessman, trying to do business w/bad guys. She did not try to skew his sexual abuse for erotica for which I am very grateful. In fact, she managed to make his every injury felt by me without actually showing me how he got them, in large. He broke my heart, this kid. I really felt for him and with him. The "guest" was sexy, interesting; and sometimes I hated him. She, Henry, did put us through it. She didn't stint on bringing us fully into their situation.I enjoyed her self-discipline. She witholds, doesn't give us anything too easily, which I think makes the payoff that much better.
Conversation doesn't try too hard, so what humor there is works well.
A satisfying story with a very satisfying outcome.
I also have a non-m/m rec: I just finished listening to Stephen King's 11/23/1963 on c/d. (I'm able to listen some while I drive professionally, and I love doing that.) I thought this was his best since The Stand. Just outstanding storytelling. I couldn't put it down.

I finished Driftwood. I liked it very much, but I felt the plot got in the way of the relationship and it was too complicated. The writing is so beautiful!

As to 11/23/1963, it was pretty long. I was not bored, not once--but I wonder if I wd have had the patience to read the whole thing. I can only suggest the audio version. It is very well read by Craig Wassen who does quite a few impressions, including Walter Cronkite, and Chet Huntley (or poss David Brinkley, not positive). Anyway, hope you enjoy it. Add to the plain interesting aspects, it is a heartfelt story; I cried several times, at the ending, too; though the ending is sensational.

I added Cinder in my to-read list. Your comment about such a sweet story sounded like something I'm kind of craving right now... :)
Anyway, before that one I'm going to read
. At least I intend to read it, if I'm able to stop ogling the cute cover. It's such a shame they used so big letters for the title on it... ;) and why not place the title a little bit upwards in the middle of the cover... oh, well... *sigh*

I think KA is overall one of the very best writers in our genre. That said, I think she's relying too heavily on the sex and not digging as deep as she could go.
But that's my personal preference. KA is deliberate in her choices, and the fact that she outsells me two to one in ebooks probably indicates she's got it right.

Yeah, but I think that's appropriate for fantasy and spec fiction. Certainly fantasy and spec fiction aimed at a broader audience.
I know my story in the Irregulars antho got slammed by PW for too much erotic content.

I need to get my hand on that book. I've heard many good things about it. By the way, it's going to be made into a movie. Jay Bell also has an interview on Jessewave about it if you're interested.

Well, for me at least, it's not so much as how explicit or numerous the erotic content is, but who writes it. :D

I guess you are right since we live in a capitalist society and numbers and sales figures is the one thing to be jugded by :P
And I think her writing is terrific, it is only the stories that don't work for me.It works for others and that is very fine.

Anne, now you just made me too curious about the one thing that gave you pause in Something Like Summer, so I guess I'm gonna have to start reading it, too. :)

I guess you do :). I am sure you will enjoy it!
KA is very hit or miss for me. Sometimes she really does it for me, and some of her stories really don't. Which means I find myself reading a lot of them, looking for the gems. It also means that I find myself more disgusted with a "meh" read than I might be from another writer, because I know she can really engage me, but hasn't done it in that particular book.

And I already have it... Since I'm putting on hold a book I'm reading, I'll start this.
I bought a slew of books today, but since I'm still reading Inheritance by Christopher Paolini it won't matter to add a few more to the to-read list.... I'll include the Jay Bell book as this is the third time I've read about it :) I've loved KA Mitchell since forever, but only 1 book has not really done it for me and it hurt my heart not to love it. She is an automatic buy for me though.
I'm reading My Heart is Within You and feeling very proud of myself. It's been sitting in my TBR file for a couple of years, and I'm finally getting to it. (It was a freebie I picked up somewhere.)Something Like Summer comes up every once in a while, and every time it does I think, "oh, I have that! I should read it!" Except that I always confuse it with Strings Attached, and Strings is the one I have. (Another freebie.)
Becky wrote: "I'm reading My Heart is Within You..."It was good but as the story progressed, one of the traits of the bond between the two characters made the writing confused and the reading difficult in my opinion. I'm curious to know what you think.

*nod nod* I'm not sure how far you have read, but a little further in the story there is a guy, who is kind of an opposite of Tim and who is also almost too good to be true. So... right now I'm really dreading how things are finally going to turn out for Ben. This is actually quite nerve-wracking...

I'm at 54%, just met Jace, pre-date. I can't put it down, but I have to work... Ben is a masochist, lol
I put off starting as the weather was so unbelievably beautiful -- instead I've been working in the garden a lot. It looks like we're not going to have any kind of real winter here in SoCal. Everything is already in bud.
Which will be bad news if a big frost comes along.

I heard possible bit of snow here in the north east. But today it's supposed to be near 50 degrees! Woot!
I'm reading Don't Let Me Gofor the book group, and I'm soooo going to order it for the library when I get a chance. I'm loving it! And I know lots of readers here who would also love it.
After that, I'm diving back into the Special Forces world for book 2, and I have no idea when I'll resurface.

I know. It's tempting to start seeding and feeding, but it would likely have a sad end. I just don't believe that spring will arrive in February. We've had snow as late as April before.

All right - that's enough whining from zone 8. Up here in zone 3 we're lucky if we can plant in July.
