Oh God... you guys are hilarious!

As for what I'm currently reading, this is it: The Affair of the Porcelain Dog. It's an interesting historical novel about a kept whore who then has to find a statue of a dog to save his life and the life of the man to took him off the streets.

It's not a romance novel, at least not yet, but it's still good so far.

message 6603: by Christopher (new)

Christopher | 137 comments That one sounds interesting! I'm reading Zero At The Bone by Jane Seville. It's one of those 'witness-to-murder-goes-into-witness-protection-and-falls-for-his-guard' stories but with a real twist. This being that his protector ends up being the hit man who was blackmailed into trying to kill him. It's an excellent read.

Also good was 'Unacceptable Risk' by Kaje Harper. I love all of Harper's stuff. I really care about her characters. This is a gay werewolf story and usually I'm a bit 'meh' about those, but this was done very well.

Yep, I've read Zero at the Bone three times now, and still love it!
I've also read Kaje's werewolf stories, and I love them a lot. The first M/M werewolf novel I read was really pathetic. Just an excuse for sex, really. So getting to read Unacceptable Risk was awesome! A breath of fresh air, and an amazing story to boot. In fact, I keep thinking about it, even now months later.

I presume you know that that Zero is one of the two books of the month currently being discussed on this forum?

I know! There are very few books that have characters that get under your skin that deeply and stick with you. I wish she'd write a series. Her next book isn't out until March though, and it's a new stand alone.

Do you have any other good recs for werewolf stories? I've kind of been avoiding them, but I'd be happy to read a good one...

Lady*M | 197 comments I finally finished The Dark Tower and I liked it a lot (yes, ending too AND Stephen King as a character, lol). When (view spoiler) died, I cried my eyes out. I can't remember when it was the last time I was invested in book(s) so much. There are inconsistencies, yes, but considering how long SK wrote it, I think he did quite well. ^^

The same Jehovah's Witness group comes by my house every weekend. At first I'd answer the door and end up trapped on my front step, letting all the cold air in while someone I didn't know read me passages from the bible. It turns out the one woman is a friend of my mom's (because my mom couldn't say no either and so they've been having tea together for years). Now I can't be rude since it will get back to my mom (who tells this woman all about my family, what we've been doing, what my kids are up to) it's really awkward. Coward that I am, I've taken to pretending I'm not home when the doorbell rings on weekends.

I figured you were reading it for the group. Otherwise, nice timing!

As for other werewolf books, check out Joely Skye's series. I read these three books: Marked
Feral
Lynx

They're good, but the last one was not nearly as good as the first two. Apparently, though these are the only books of her's I've read, they're set in the same universe as some of her other books, and a few fringe characters from those books appear here. It's not the best way to write a trilogy, in my opinion, because I lost out on a lot reading the third book which is set during the time of the first two. It's odd.

However, I was riveted for the first two in the series.

I also have another werewolf book Prey by Andrea Speed, which is the first in a series, but I have yet to read it.

Pender, all you have to do is argue with them for a while. I had one coming to my house every week for about a year? Interesting experience. We debated quite a lot. Friendly debate, mind you, not especially adversarial or mean-spirited, but then, I enjoy having my beliefs challenged.

Anyway, when the lady became insistent that I become a Jehovah's Witness too (in spite of the fact that we demonstrably had no common ground shared beliefs), I ended the weekly chats. So I now have a big red X on my house at the map at the Kingdom Hall. I see them around my development from time to time, but none of them have stopped at my house in years. Apparently, I'm incorrigible. LOL!

Oh God, that really sucks. My mom's in the health field and she ends up talking about me to her clients. So it's really awkward when they end up giving me advice through her. It used to be a lot of what classes I should take in college and then how to get a job after that. And then I'd wander into the office and a client I'd never met before would know exactly who I was. Awkward!

It's actually pretty funny when you think about it -- the way we react to the thought of our parents' sexuality.

I walked in on my naked parents when was about five or so. I think we all squealed in shock and panic.

And then when I was in my twenties I had the misfortune yet again of walking in on my parents mid-deed. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. Luckily that time I ducked out before anyone was the wiser -- and immediately enrolled in therapy.

Okay, kidding about the therapy, but should it really come as a shock to someone to realize that their parents occasionally have sex? :-D

Oh yes! Let me ask -- what do you think of the historical veracity of this versus plot? Because I've heard that there are enormous historical gaffes. Holmes, for example. The reference to Sherlock Holmes is way off for the time period?

Yeah, but knowing and having a visual are two entirely different things. Personally, I don't want the visual on anybody's sex life, but I've only ever walked in on my parents. I'd probably have that horrified auto-flinch with everybody. More flinch-y depending on how close I was to the parties involved because, to me, my stumbling onto it would feel more invasive of their privacy regardless of how inadvertent/accidental.

What was your next Christmas gift to your parents? A bedroom door lock? :-)

It is strange. I was 12 when my sister was born, just at the right age for it to 'click' with me that that meant that parents must have...*gulp*...been doing 'it'...*shudder*

But then I'm sure it melts my father's brain when he thinks about my sexuality and what that entails.

Maybe you should try your hand at a gay werewolf story next. Stick a picture of Taylor Lautner above the screen and see what comes...so to speak.

After reading so much m/m fiction these last few months I'm tempted to have another crack at it myself. I've got about four or five unfinished novels somewhere in my files.

He's also, like, totally an infant. I have children older than that boy. I dunno, it just freaked me the hell out when women my age (and older) were going apeshit over that kid. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I've no desire or fantasy to boink a manchild.

No, no. I'm flitting across the world wide web trying to catch up on things as they occur to me. Which is really pretty erratic. So I go from...is there a Nook link for COTT to wondering if I sent someone the correct (unwatermarked) cover to Dangerous Ground to getting breakfast out of the microwave to answering a text message to answering an email to checking whether I ever downloaded a particular book to remembering to move wet clothes into dryer to seeing if there's a movie I can take nephew/niece to when I pick them up from school to popping back into Goodreads.... and so on and so on.

I'm truly the least focused I've ever been in my life. And I don't know that it's a good thing.

Granted, I don't know that it's a bad thing either.

I'm looking forward to Unacceptable Risk (I've only read the sample so far), and I'm already glad to hear there's a sequel. And I haven't read this one yet, but I've heard good things about Blood Howl, and the sample was strong. So take that for what it's worth.

At the moment I'm reading a m/f called Getting Dumped. Tawna is an online friend, and she's got a wacky, off-color sense of humor that you either love or hate. It's published by Coliloquy, and a "new concept" they're calling active fiction. Basically, it's choose your own adventure. Except I'm a fair bit into the story, and I've only been able to make one choice so far. I'm not sure I buy the idea of active fiction as more than a short-lived gimmick, but I'm enjoying the story, so that's all that really matters.
