It's interesting to me how many people are afraid of clowns, actually.

If you like touches of humor with your paranormality, you can't go wrong with Frank Tuttle. I'm wild about his Markhat series to the point of being an age-inappropriate fangirl. :)

It's been so long since I've visited this thread... but I was wondering if any of you had read Flight of the Sparrows by Laura Baumbach and what you thought of it. It doesn't seem to be a romance book at all. While the story is good, it's making me wonder what it's ultimately about.
... and I think MLR press could have found her a better editor. I've seen a few grammar mistakes that should have been caught. Never mind the head hopping that's driving me nuts on occasion.

Oooohhh, the Mysterious is on my to-read list! If we ever decide what we're reading next month, maybe I'll get that along with it. I love Alex Beecroft's writing too.

Yes. Yes, she was. There were a ton of crazyfunny cameos, also, which I didn't appreciate as a kid, but do now that my own daughter is watching it...

So any of u read the new Warder book by Mary Calmes?? Just now Mary told me it's the last in the series; am so sad :[ but thankfully there'll be some christmas stories in future :D

Err, isn't she the owner of mlr?

I love this one! And it has about as much suspens/scare factor as I can take. I was totally rattled after watching "Vertigo" as a 12yo. It gave me the creeps. I'm still easy to scare with anything fiction. Not so in RL, though. :)

I looked it up. Here.

I've been reading some shorter pieces the last few days:

Good to know! I got all the books released today and didn't know where to start.

This is set in the same story line as
, which I thought was hilarious. It isn't quite as crude and is maybe less superficial smut? So far so good.

I have figured this one out. If it is a really popular book name (like After Midnight), type in the book name and the least common part of the author's name, like this: "after midnight sonny" and it comes right up.

Another fave Halloween-y movie, Tom Hanks in The Burbs. I love that movie.
Just finished (or rather quit on) Men in Space. 3 Novelettes. Just awful, IMHO.
Now reading, Heart of Oak by M. Kei, M/M Horatio Hornblower or Capt and Commander type. Boy, is it fun.

Still has sound effects. lol."
But does it have a long list of new euphemisms? That's what *I* want to know.

No. He either used them all up or is saving the rest for his Hot Head series. :D

I am at 50% and i'm liking the slower pace. It's like reading an historical but in the future, it's difficult to explain. I hope i'll find the right words by the end of the book :-)

It felt like Old Man and the Sea to me. I wish I could gotten to know the characters better. That kind of didn't happen for me. I don't mind slow pace, I just didn't get that much out of the middle of the book. He writing style, I like very much though.

I'm over halfway done with Flight of the Sparrows. It's a good book, almost too good to put down. But I still say she needs a proofreader for it. I keep finding at least 1-2 spelling errors/missed words/punctuation errors in each chapter which is a little distracting. That, and I was surprised that there doesn't seem to be a romance in it, or even a single gay character, even though they're all men. I almost put this in the teen LGBTQ section at the library. I'm glad I stopped to read it first... anyway, on to reading the rest now! ttyl.

I remember my visiting cousin from the midwest telling me that one. I still have a perfect terrifying image of that girl in my head.

Yes! Remember those old tin jack-in-the-boxes? Different clowns on each panel? And the scariest one was the clown with the black background.

I remember reading that in junior high. HORRIFYING.
Or what's the one about the statue in the graveyard? All I remember is the woman who dies and there's a broken marble finger clutched in her hand. YEEEESH!!!

On the book front, I remember reading Shirley Jackson's The Lottery for the first time. THAT was scary.
