mc | 1308 comments Yes, I do remember that, Kyle. Growing up, one of my favorite cousins was very much into horror movies, and boy, I saw a lot of them, a lot of those John Carpenter epics. I liked them more then, than the rather gory and explicit ones they have now. Pyschological fear stories are more effective that all than blood and gore (for me).

On the book front, I remember reading Shirley Jackson's The Lottery for the first time. THAT was scary.

Or what about the step-sister with the golden arm?

message 5504: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments THAT, I've never heard of - and google is not helping me, either.

mc | 1308 comments I feel like I should get a flashlight and shine it up my face.

It's interesting to me how many people are afraid of clowns, actually.

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) | 1606 comments This collection, The Mysterious, is perfect for Halloween. For me, it rated "just right" on the Eerie Scale. It includes stories by JL, Alex Beecroft, and Laura Baumbach.

If you like touches of humor with your paranormality, you can't go wrong with Frank Tuttle. I'm wild about his Markhat series to the point of being an age-inappropriate fangirl. :)

mc | 1308 comments Thanks, KZ. I'll check those out.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Have you ever heard about the hitchhiking girl to which my best friend's brother lent a jacket and then he dropped her at an unknown place and when he got back to visit her the day after, it was a cemetery and there was her tomb and his jacket on top of it?

Tracy (tracykitn) | 461 comments Despite the fact that none of us (I hope!) are 12YO girls, this whole conversation for some reason is reminding me of that scene in Troop Beverly Hills when they're telling ghost stories... LOL :D

It's been so long since I've visited this thread... but I was wondering if any of you had read Flight of the Sparrows by Laura Baumbach and what you thought of it. It doesn't seem to be a romance book at all. While the story is good, it's making me wonder what it's ultimately about.

... and I think MLR press could have found her a better editor. I've seen a few grammar mistakes that should have been caught. Never mind the head hopping that's driving me nuts on occasion.

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) | 1606 comments I think the best ghost story EVER is "The Monkey's Paw." You can find the whole thing online. (Gives me the willies to this day!)

Oooohhh, the Mysterious is on my to-read list! If we ever decide what we're reading next month, maybe I'll get that along with it. I love Alex Beecroft's writing too.

Yes. Yes, she was. There were a ton of crazyfunny cameos, also, which I didn't appreciate as a kid, but do now that my own daughter is watching it...

I love this one! And it has about as much suspens/scare factor as I can take. I was totally rattled after watching "Vertigo" as a 12yo. It gave me the creeps. I'm still easy to scare with anything fiction. Not so in RL, though. :)

Calathea | 6034 comments Josh wrote: "Holy moly. Okay. Let's get back on track. WHAT ARE YOU ALL READING? ;-D"

I've been reading some shorter pieces the last few days:

Summer's Lease by Scot D. Ryersson , which I liked.

Stolen Summer by S.A. Meade , which I loved first and got irritated by later.

She's Got Balls by Mia Watts , which despite the unlikely circumstances in the story made me laugh.

The Manituw by Lisbeth Jenkins , which I finished today after having it lying around half read for weeks. I've not decided on this one.

Grown Men by Damon Suede , which I just downloaded from Riptide and is great so far.

This is set in the same story line as Seedy Business by Damon Suede , which I thought was hilarious. It isn't quite as crude and is maybe less superficial smut? So far so good.

I have figured this one out. If it is a really popular book name (like After Midnight), type in the book name and the least common part of the author's name, like this: "after midnight sonny" and it comes right up.

Candice Frook (cefrook) | 374 comments OK, wait just a minute, because I have been unable to join y'all for a few days and have my own 2 cents to put in re Halloween stuff. My favorite, scariest book of all time: Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The original movie, same name, w/Julie Harris is wonderful, spooky.

Another fave Halloween-y movie, Tom Hanks in The Burbs. I love that movie.

Just finished (or rather quit on) Men in Space. 3 Novelettes. Just awful, IMHO.

Now reading, Heart of Oak by M. Kei, M/M Horatio Hornblower or Capt and Commander type. Boy, is it fun.

I am at 50% and i'm liking the slower pace. It's like reading an historical but in the future, it's difficult to explain. I hope i'll find the right words by the end of the book :-)

It felt like Old Man and the Sea to me. I wish I could gotten to know the characters better. That kind of didn't happen for me. I don't mind slow pace, I just didn't get that much out of the middle of the book. He writing style, I like very much though.

I'm over halfway done with Flight of the Sparrows. It's a good book, almost too good to put down. But I still say she needs a proofreader for it. I keep finding at least 1-2 spelling errors/missed words/punctuation errors in each chapter which is a little distracting. That, and I was surprised that there doesn't seem to be a romance in it, or even a single gay character, even though they're all men. I almost put this in the teen LGBTQ section at the library. I'm glad I stopped to read it first... anyway, on to reading the rest now! ttyl.
