So...it's not books, but everyone's favorite Halloween movie(s)? Name the top three (any order is okay).

1. Dawn of the Dead (remake, tho the Romero original...Well, Romero is King of All Zombie Awesomeness, let's just say that)
2. Resident Evil (#1 and #3...#2 was okay, but...)
3. Cloverfield

None of these were particularly frightening to me, but I adored the monsters. And I liked looking for the easter eggs in Cloverfield.

If you want what scared me? Final Destination. My daughter and I escorted each other to the fricking bathroom after that one because neither one of us wanted to go anywhere by ourselves, LOL.[/wuss]

I haven't seen Sweeney Todd yet, it's in my to watch pile.
Burton is very good at what he does. I enjoyed his version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow very much.

I love Army of Darkness! That is a fav of mine. However, The Evil Dead, scares the crap out of me - it's the tree scene
Zombieland had me laughing from the opening credits to the end credits
Another good Bruce Campbell movie that has horror elements is Bubba Ho-tep

It's typical Bruce.
Bubba Ho-tep is a 2002 black comedy film starring Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley - now a resident in a nursing home. The film also stars Ossie Davis as Jack, a black man who claims to be John F. Kennedy (explaining that he was patched up after the assassination in Dallas, dyed black, and abandoned by Lyndon Johnson). The film was directed by Don Coscarelli. The title comes from a novella by Joe R. Lansdale which originally appeared in the anthology The King Is Dead: Tales of Elvis Post-Mortem.
While the novella and film revolve around an Ancient Egyptian mummy (played by Bob Ivy) terrorizing a retirement home, Bubba Ho-tep also involves the deeper theme of aging and growing old in a culture that values only the young. The film also features a cameo by Reggie Bannister, the cult hero of director Don Coscarelli's Phantasm series.

I like Monsters, Inc. ; ) I'm a big baby; it's one of the reasons I read romance! But I do like Wizard of Oz and Phantom of the Opera.

My daughter saw Paranormal 2 this past weekend. She thought it was scarier than the first one and she loves scary.

He's the reason I started watching Burn Notice. Army of Darkness is more comedy than horror.

Zombieland was awesome campy horror. If you've seen Bill Murray as a zombie, you've seen Zombieland. Kinda hard to forget that, LOL

LC, I used to be the same about action-adventure. There was a time when I'd seen pretty much every kung fu movie ever made in this country or overseas. No amount of violence seemed to register. And now I'm flinching and wincing and closing my eyes...I can't take it anymore.

I thought Sleepy Hollow ultimately went over the top, but it's still an amazing film. What an atmosphere.

Ayesh | 418 comments Oh it's about a FBI agent and an unpredictable international art thief, I know it's a very common theme, I mean two men on opposite sides of the law and all, but it's so beautifully written and new mystery on every page, simply amazing.
There r 4 books and they r free read on the author's site :)
and talking of FBI agents, is there any possibililty of a sequel to Fair Game ??

I read the book to prepare myself for the movie -so I'd know when to look away. The book was excellent, hated the sequel. The movie was creepy but not as bloody as I had thought it would be.

Oops. I'll say it's a common theme. It's the theme of my Carina Christmas story. ;-P

I'll have to check those out.

Yes, there will eventually be a sequel to Fair Game. Originally planned for next year but now I'm dithering over it -- the idea of getting the official proposal written -- first three chapters, etc -- before the end of the year is just exhausting right now. I don't think it's in me.

message 473: by Ayesh (new)

Ayesh | 418 comments No no please don't give up; Fair Game was an awesome book; we'd love to read about them again; I know we say it easily when in reality it's 1000times harder to actually write a whole book; but please keep it into consideration :(

I think it was watching Sherlock on PBS that got me in the mood for this, but whatever it was, I'm grateful, b/c this is goo-od! I'm really enjoying Christopher's self-deprecating voice. Adrien English's voice is self-deprecating too, but in an entirely different way. I can't quite put my finger on how yet, but it's fascinating.

Lissa (parisbvamp) I've been reading a lot of stuff in our crit group lately and am stuck on two pieces that aren't even finished. Argh! I wish people would write faster sometimes. Or in the case of Nano going on, I wish they would stick to one piece instead of hopping around to many. Sigh.

I've made this commitment to read one ebook a week (fingers crossed), so last week was
Astrid Amara's HALF PASS. It's not actually out yet, it releases from Samhain next year. Anyway, it's an equestrian-themed mystery romance. The mystery is probably the weakest element. The romance and the world-building -- the main story -- is just great. She does such a terrific job describing the stable and the riding world. She gives you a glimpse of both the glamour and the horse shit (literally), and her characters -- including the horses -- are really well done. She's captured it wonderfully. There were so many parts I was smiling or laughing at.

She's got a solid romantic dynamic -- closeted Brazilian dressage trainer and the struggling, down-to-earth and openly out owner of the stable. Something a little more original than we usually see.

One thing Amara really conveyed -- and I haven't seen almost anyone other than Dick Francis get this across so effectively -- is how scary and dangerous horses are even when you love them dearly. They're big and they're heavy and they're sometimes unpredictable, and you can be badly hurt by them.

Anyway, I enjoyed this one very much! Keep an eye out for it.

Josh (joshlanyon) | 23709 comments Mod
I have to admit the first one did little for me. I'd had it recced a million times, and in theory it's everything I should like, but...it just didn't click. The switching POV was a lot of it, probably. But the characters didn't grab me either. (Which is why I sympathize with readers who don't get the whole Adrien thing -- sometimes, nothing personal, the stories and characters aren't your kind of thing.)

I do want to try the next book or two to see if the series grows on me, because that sometimes happens -- and there's got to be a reason people keep telling me I'm going to love these books.

message 494: by Josh (new)

Josh (joshlanyon) | 23709 comments Mod
Astrid definitely knows her horses -- but she's a horse nut. In fact, I think her main incentive to write is to feed her habit. Literally. (I'm kidding -- she's too good a writer for that to be true -- but she *is* a horse nut. But I consider that a compliment.)

I don't know that I'd have the nerve to get back in the saddle after breaking my back.

Not a native speaker, forgive me).
