No you cannot win. It was offical. Nobody argued so now I am the eternal winner. What about "In vain were the well-meant condescensions of Sir Thomas, and all the officious prognostications of Mrs. Norris that she would be a good girl;..."
prognostications- plural of prog·nos·ti·ca·tion (Noun)1. The action of foretelling or prophesying future events.
2. A prophecy.
con·de·scen·sion (knd-snshn)
n.
1. The act of condescending or an instance of it.
2. Patronizingly superior behavior or attitude.
I think that the girl is sad because she had to live with her aunt (Lady Bertram) and is feeling homesick, which is considered rude in this time period and Mrs. Norris is apologizing to Lady Bertram because of her behavour.
