It's very topical, you're right. And I think there are all kinds of riveting stories there -- the risk element definitely ratchets up the tension. I'd like to see a realistic handling of it.

Glad you're enjoying the stories, Niquae. Always so nice to hear that.

message 154: by Mary (new)

Mary (mary-soto) | 37 comments Okay I'll put this out there just because I might get lucky. I would REALLY REALLY love to read a story involving a sheikh. I've read novellas (favorite is The Stallion & The Rabbit)but not an actual full length novel-unless I count 2 yaoi novels (The Aristocrat & The Desert Prince, and Eternal Love). As long as its GLBT; it could be a mystery, action, drama, etc., I'm not picky. But it would be a fulfilled wish to read one.

Why a fulfilled wish? Well, I won a contest for a story of my choosing and of course I chose one w/ a sheikh. I was given free rein to pick the setting, character descriptions, etc. It's over 2 years now and I have yet to hear from them about it. The yearning to read a full length novel w/a sheikh is still there.

Very interesting. Sheik stories used to be wildly popular, so I can see that an m/m reader might wish to find them in this genre too.

What is that you like about sheik stories in particular?

message 156: by Mary (new)

Mary (mary-soto) | 37 comments I live in Tx. and I've never really gone on trips or vacations (just peeked at Houston, San Antonio, and Veracruz)so their culture seems so exotic and just so far away from what I'm used to, I guess. Also the customs and the idea of what or how he would handle the idea of a male lover/partner. It feels very intriguing and sexy to me.

message 157: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid | 8 comments Mary, Carol Lynne did a few sheik stories on the Bodyguards in love series.

Thanks for the rec. Ingrid, but I've already read them. :)

I think the sheik thing is about as exotic as it gets, so I can see the attraction. It's a fun idea. No promises, but I'll give a little thought to it. I like the potential quirkiness of it.

Sand, Arabian horses, obnoxious camels, the blue face paint of the Tuareg people, making love in a tent. The possibilities are interesting. :-)

Wellll, I don't know to be honest. I'm really, sincerely trying to cut back on projects, so probably not next year. Realistically, 2012 is most likely.

How about a story revolving around a Librarian - seemingly inoccuous, yet incredibley handsome ;) Libraries are also great places for things to happen. When I was fourteen I worked in the one of the oldest libraries in Indiana. I had to go to the "lower level" to file and, holy cow, can your mind play tricks on you in places like that.
(Forgive me if you have already done the Librarian/Library-thing, I just started your books.

Also, I think stories that revolve the most mundane occupations can be the most interesting. We have a friend who works at my husband's company who is an Actuarial; he is also gay and seems to always be available. I asked my husband why he never has a "someone" in his life - he's handsome, very fit, great smile, etc. Hubby says "it's hard to meet 'like' people when you have your nose buried in numbers all day..." It would be great if a big, handsome FBI agent or cop walked into his life one day (without arresting him of course). :)

You know, I've toyed with the idea of a story about a librarian for a while now, so this appeals to me very much.

I like your story about the Actuarial too. Another great dynamic.

I'm toying with the idea of a story exclusive to Amazon & B&N (well, and PDF through my own site). Just an experiment. This might be the ticket. *g*

Liade | 397 comments As a booklover I like the idea of a librarian a lot.

But I am still hankering after a story involving somebody playing second viola/third tuba/first triangle etc., some not-star in a famous orchestra. On tour would be best. Oh the possibilities....

message 172: by Josh (new)

Josh (joshlanyon) | 23709 comments Mod
I like that too. Well, not the tuba. I think it's difficult to get romantic about the tuba. Though I suppose John Philip Sousa would disagree.

I think it's incredibly flattering when the characters in a short story make enough impression that readers want to see more of them. Thank you, Barb.

I remember I first became aware of Mel Keegan through a short story written in an anthology. The story was Breakheart, and I went on to read everything I could find by Keegan.

message 174: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 232 comments OK, of course more Adrien and Jake, that goes without saying. If you want to make it easier on yourself, you could just rewrite the whole series from Jake's point of view. ;) I'd especially love to see the scene from the first book where Adrien passes out after hiding in Rob's closet from Jakes POV. I'd love to see inside Jake's head during that whole debacle. I'd also love to be a fly on the wall when Jake and Det. Chan interview Lisa over lunch.

I wouldn't mind reading a prequel short story to Dangerous Ground. I thought that was such a well written story and really enjoyed it, so I'd love to see the two main characters interacting before they got together.

You think so? I would say that in only being in the closet are they similar. Otherwise, Jeff is a very outgoing, gregarious man. He wasn't afraid to be seen with Austin; he just didn't want to come out to all and sundry for him.

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments I would say that in only being in the closet are they similar.

Both of them can be real assholes when they wanted to protect their closets. (Plus, I just realized both couples have the same initials A & J.).

But I admit, Jeff is not nearly as bad as Jake. I like Jake better though. ;)

Seeing how you have already tried your hand in spec fiction, that's just one step from... science fiction. I think I would enjoy Josh Lanyon's mystery in space. Ah, the possibilities... XD

Someone else said this already, but I would really like a sequel to In a Dark Wood. Among your shorter stories, this one is my favorite.

Fehu | 86 comments If I were to request a sequel it would be: "The Ghost wore yellow Socks", its the first book I read from you and it would be nice to see how Perry and Nick faire in their new surrounding. n_n

Also I would like to see a novel like "The Darkling Thrush" which does not have to be a sequel. It was just different from your other works and liked it quite a lot.

Oh, I forgot one! Sequel to Strange Fortune please!

Cheryl | 232 comments The comment made by Elliott at the end of Fair Game, telling Tucker he can't talk politics with his dad, has me wanting an election year short story with these three characters. I think Elliott trying to keep them from hearing or anything political while in each others presence would be highly entertaining, and we could all use a distraction during an election season!

I would love to read a book you write about military men in the middle of a war just like in "Until we Meet Once More".

Thank you!

Just to share with the other readers if they haven't read it, in that short story, Vic and Sean are both military men and former lover who got reunited when one goes on a rescue mission to save the other. They are fighting for their lives in the Afghan mountains and in the middle of this chaos, they have to face the fact that maybe they are still in love with each other. It was like watching a good war movie. It was impressive..

So glad that worked for you. There was one heck of a lot of research involved with it!

And another book I would like to read is a sequel for . I'm one of those readers who prefer contemporary novel, but I just luuuve the world you created in that novel. I'm sorry to hear it did not sell well (I'm quite surprised...)..

Well, it's possible I was a little impatient. It's sold pretty steadily, if slowly. I think readers don't associate me with spec fiction, so there's some uncertainty there. They want to see the reviews and hear that others have gone before and enjoyed the journey.

The latin-like vocabulary? Yum! In fact, I want to be a "librivenator" like Bliss when I grow up! .

:-D

The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks will definitely have a sequel before too much longer. The spec fiction titles will also eventually have their sequels. ADT for sure, and most probably SF, though that will likely take a bit longer because Blind Eye Books does have some great stories lined up on its roster ahead of me.

I was reading up on the DADT repeal yesterday, (yes, I know that that happened a while ago and that as an actual gay I should have already known that this occurred, but I've been busy, okay? *g*) Anyway during my extensive catching up I realized that it might be possible for peeps who where kicked out to either re-enlist, or even be actively recruited back into the services from which they had been discharged (specialists, people with a lot of experience, etc.) And I thought... now there's a real conflict. Do you go back? (Thinking of characters like Nick Reno from GWYSocks here.)

Exactly! AND the possibility of stuff like exquisite timing and bizarre, Agatha Cristie-like chemicals coming into play. I've written about half of a locked room mystery that is set in a space station hotel (for a shared-world compilation project with my writer's group friends) but there is so much that can be done in the space station setting. I personally find it much more forgiving than other, more traditional fantasy settings. For one thing, there's ample room for amateur sleuths since it's not like actual authorities are readily available out in "Teh Void." You can have disaster stories, mysteries, romances, westerns... SO MUCH! Sorry--got sorta glassy-eyed and geeky there. I just love space station stories.

Yeah, I tried to see if anybody was talking about that on Outserve but couldn't really find much beyond the official training given to troops who are being integrated. I read the Air Force materials. My favorite part of it was this part that said that chaplains can object to ministering to homosexual airmen and file something or other to say that it would go against their faith--and that filing this form would result in the chaplain's separation from the Air Force. That's what you gotta love about the military. Once they decide on a policy, they don't fool around in the implementation. (ha!)
