Diane (dianenyc) Here is another question for Josh... "Which of your books would you recommend to someone who's unfamiliar with your work?"

I am thinking of starting a thread/bookshelf in the m/m romance group tentatively titled "For Starters" and it will include a list of authors and the book each author feels is the best introduction to their work. It's for people who may have heard good things about a writer, but don't know which book to try first.

I agree that either Psycop or Adrien English would be good starters...Keeping Promise Rock by Amy Lane and Promises by Marie Sexton I think are good too.

My first m/m experience was Special Forces and that was intense...although it's one of my all time absolute favorites.

I meant a starter for Josh's books. I am asking each author to suggest one of their own books. :)

The first Josh Lanyon book I read was Fair Game and it really made me want to read more of his stuff...but AE is certainly a great start.

Norma Fair Game is a good start. It's where I started too.

I'm happy to say that I keep forgetting I can BUY books on it. So far I've mostly just downloaded stuff I already own. And then last night it dawned on me that I could put some fan fiction on here. :-D

I'm really enjoying reading. Still finding my way around my little gadget, though.

Honestly, I don't do it here in Josh's Q&A because it usually doesn't occur to me (sorry, Josh, LOL) but...I kinda thought that was the purpose? Letting like-minded folks know when you've struck gold?????

Perplexed.

Sure. That's the purpose of this thread! Feel free to pimp to your heart's content. My only "rule" was that I didn't want author's pimping themselves, cause that quickly turns discussion into nonstop advertising.

All I can say is that if I'd realized how much pleasure and relaxation I'd get from an ereader, I'd have made investing in one a priority. I just didn't realize how much superior to reading off my laptop it would be.

This should be such an easy question, but I always find it difficult because I write (I think) a variety of things. Maybe at this point I'd rec Fair Game?

I used to rec Dark Horse.

I should qualify that, though, because I don't mind the authors who regularly take part here mentioning when they've got a new release or a contest or something. I just didn't want...well, you all know what I didn't want and why I didn't want it. :-D

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments I got my iPod touch! I still need to figure out the best app to read PDF files.

Speaking of first books, which book should I recommend to a friend who is absolutely new to M/M romance? She's curious of why I am so obsessed with this genre and she thinks it's strange. No erotic or overly explicit book, please.

Cleon, in that case, I'd recommend Megan Derr's "Magic and Mischief."

message 267: by Cleon Lee (new)

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments I need to read Magic and Mischief too! More reason to buy. lol.

Stanza often freezes on me. Once I had to reset my Ipod because it froze. Now I am using PDF reader lite. i don't plan on buying DRM locked files & most M/M romance fics are not locked anyway, so I guess I can skip Bluefire for now.

My friend likes thriller, fantasy, and sometimes romance.

My first Josh Lanyon was TGWYS. Also my first m/m book altogether, which might possibly explain why I love that story so much. I didn't just fall in insta-love with Josh's books -- I fell in love with an entire genre. ;-)

But I'd agree with Fair Game as a first for a Josh virgin now.

Josh wrote: "All I can say is that if I'd realized how much pleasure and relaxation I'd get from an ereader, I'd have made investing in one a priority. I just didn't realize how much superior to reading off my laptop it would be."

You can sprawl with an ereader. Isn't it great? LOL. Man, I missed sprawling when I was reading on my laptop. And I've noticed that the K3 is much kinder on my eyes.

Also wanted to note 2 truly great things about Amazon:

1) Sharing. When I find a new (or new-to-me) author or a book that really strikes me, I'm a shameless ho for pimping it and being able to loan it out to other shameless ho's would be nice. I really do think the lending feature is a huge help, rather than a hurt, to authors. I'm reconsidering buying books from amazon because of this feature. Now that I've tried sharing, I'd like to be able to do it more. Perhaps not for my auto-buy authors, but maybe for my new-to-me authors? Hm.

2) Samples. Even though I do the bulk of my buying elsewhere, I'm ridiculously fond of DLing samples. Sure, I can read excerpts elsewhere, but not on my K3. Plus a lot of times, the samples are longer than posted excerpts. For example, I know that the first chapter is my excerpt for my Lovely Wicked, but at Amazon, the sample runs well into the third chapter. Yay!

I had to resort to reading of my laptop for a few weeks after my two year old broke my K2, and I suffered having to read of a screen and the mobility sucks can't have with you everywhere.

The K3 is awesome and I agree the screen is a lot more like paper than the first. I LOVE MY KINDLE!

Cleon Lee | 2235 comments Aside from Magic and Mischief, I am going to try to recommend Adrien English series to my M/M virgin friend. lol.

I just found out there is an app for Ereader from B&N so I can download books I buy from Fictionwise directly to my iPod touch! OMG the setting is awesome ! Yay!! :D

*off to read The Darkling Thrush*

Uh......

Should I be worried about your cousin? ;-D

Having a reasonably high firewall helps, and that is a major reason for keeping those barriers in place. I've occasionally been made uncomfortable, but considering how much email and reader interaction I have, the percentage is miniscule. I would say that my SO and family are far more worried and concerned than I am. Which is probably a good thing because it reminds me to be careful for their sake as well as my own.

I'll leave that one to the readers. Do I have other books like TGWYS?

Was it the setting you liked? The characters? The mystery?

I never know how to pair these things.

The next book out is Dead Run -- fourth in the Dangerous Ground series. It will be out september 13th from Loose Id (they keep an exclusive for a month or two).

Hey Josh,
It was mainly the characters i enjoyed.I also loved the fact that it was more about Nick and Perry than the actual mystery. I figured your books are more mystery than romance. In the Adrien series, it had alot to do with mystery than it had to do with Adrien and Jake. I may be wrong Josh, anyway, you're the expert here. September 13TH is so close. Is it kindle edition? I can't wait to read it, anything you write comes out being solid gold..yep, you are that good.

The Dark Farewell by Josh Lanyon They are different books, for sure, but they have a similar feel too. It's awesome and the MCs are really really great...The ending is a heartstopper.

This of course is IMHO...It's not like I've read *coughs*ahem*coughs* ALL of Josh's books so there might be something I missed that is also similar :O)

I can't say that I can think of any other of Josh's books that have that same exact feel, but all his books are so great that you won't be a shortage of fantastic stories to read.

I took a peek at your bookshelves, and saw that you read "Come Unto these Yellow Sands", "Snowball in Hell" and "The AE Series" which (for now) are my favorite books from Josh..."In a Dark Wood" is really good, it's not PNRish but it's like the best kind of scary story. It's not a happy one, but fantastic nonetheless and it's a SUPER fast read. "Don't Look Back" is also really good, it's one of those fuzzy reads. I'll explain :O) For most of the book, you feel like you don't have the whole story the whole time and it's all a bit foggy. I loved the premise too.

"The Darkling Thrush" is also FANTASTIC, it's fantasy, (and to me had a really awesome steampunk feel to it) the language and imagery IS AWESOME!!

"This Rough Magic" is also GREAT, Josh writes Noir like a dream, so also one I would really recommend.

Well I just went on and on :O) Hope my ramblings are useful!

Josh Josh Josh,

I thoroughly enjoyed your book 'In a dark wood'. You have a good sense of humor and i notice it when i read most of your books. Timothy was so frickin funny to me. To be honest, i did laugh when i read how he was crying when Him and Luke got lost. It was also kind of a scary read. I bought it on amazon so, let me go leave my review before i go to bed. Definately 5 stars.
