And they don't fart in bed. I don't have an SO, but my cat does that all. the. time. I've considered getting one of those Better Marriage Blankets.

Lol! Farts or not, as a general rule I think cats make much better bed partners than SOs.

Unless it's a short story, I only read ebooks on my ereader (a nameless sony prs505), though, of course, all my ebooks are stashed on my harddrive (and an external one for safe keeping)

Blaine (blainedarden) Barb wrote: "oh I never know when I may get caught somewhere running errands - and my phone is always with me for a quick chapter! and i have been known to even sneak to the loo during work hours, phone in hand..."

The only thing I named is my netbook, which is called -doosje- (meaning small box, literally, but also describes a silly or scatterbrained girl) ... and yes, it's male ;)

My ereader fits perfectly into my handbag, so everywhere I take my handbag, I take my ereader with me, even if I know full well I'm not going to have time to read (like choir practice)

Blaine (blainedarden) Barb wrote: "I let my gender down somewhat - don't always carry a bag but never leave home without my phone! Ken Doll is fitted in a lovely purple leather cover, a bit bigger than ideal probably - maybe I just ..."

Nah, you're not. You cannot let your gender down, gender expectations let us down ;)

It took years before I finally resigned to carry a bag. The reason? Not enough pockets in women's trousers (especially the stretch kind).
But ... I fell in love with Kipling bags and since trouser pockets are never big enough to carry writing equipment, I carry my purple Kipling everywhere :D

My (2ndhand) ereader came with a cover ... the inside is lovely and grey, the outside a horrible camel/beige/brown/whatever colour, but I decided I can live with it. Though I have some sort of stretch book cover lying around somewhere ... I really need to see if that fits (black with skulls - much better)

message 214: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianenyc) Hey Josh - I’m not sure if someone asked this before but… Do you have a preference as to whether people buy your books directly from the publisher or through Amazon?

I’ve heard authors say they get higher royalties from sales made directly from the publisher’s website, but then again, a decent showing on Amazon’s sales ranker probably draws attention and exposes the title to a wider pool of potential buyers. Any thoughts?

message 215: by Norma (new)

Norma Must be something in the water. I broke my Kindle today too. :( I actually cried. After a few resets it's mostly working, but part of the screen is no longer usable. I'm a SAHM so I don't have the budget for a new one right now. The husband said he'd get me a new one for my bday in the summer. At least I can still read my books.

Did you do a hard reset? Hold the power switch for at least 15seconds? I had something similar happen and a few hard resets worked.

message 217: by Norma (new)

Norma Yeah. I did the hard resets. I just fully charged it and will try again with the hard reset. The lines are gone, but there's a black spot on the top corner and the very top is just grey. I can't see the book title, the battery picture or anything else that's up there on that line. But it's just about 1cm, so I can see my books at least! Oh, well I can't see the top collection either. But I can read (we're trying to stay positive here so I don't start crying again!)

Which Kindle is it? Amazon has a 1 Year Warranty Service, so if it's less than a year old, you should contact them right away.

I'd contact them in any case and report the problem.

message 219: by Norma (new)

Norma Thanks ns. It's over a year old. No warranty. :( I'm going to call them anyway. I'm fairly certain I can get it repaired or whatever, I just most likely can't afford it right now. It's all good though.

message 220: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianenyc) Amazon may allow you to buy a warranty extension (I think it's about $60) and then they'll fix/replace it for you. Their customer service is really nice... just cry a little on the phone! :)

They replaced my Kindle twice because it kept rebooting on its own. We eventually figured out the Kindles were fine and my lighted cover was causing the problem. Then they sent me a new lighted cover too! They want good word of mouth - so they'll usually bend over backwards to help. If you do get someone who's not helpful... hang up and try again with a different rep.

message 221: by Norma (new)

Norma Thanks Diane! I'm going to call today. Wish me luck!

I'm here because Barb is one pushy book pimp! I love her for it, because the Adrien English books were sooo good.

Are y'all still talking Kindles? I've had My K2 for 2 years, and it's named "Putthatdownitisnotatoy!" (i have young children). I have some serious technolust for the Kindle DX, but my darned K2 won't die so I can't replace it. It doesn't hold a charge for as long as it used to (now I have to recharge it every ~3-4 books), but it's still alive and kicking.

Diane, you've nailed the two basic considerations for an author -- and the reason that I don't have a huge preference about where my readers buy my work.

I guess my only preference is that they do buy the work.

The better royalties come from direct to publisher sales. And these royalties are significantly better.

But it's also true that having titles hit the bestseller list at Amazon also sells more books. And luckily most of my stuff manages to hit the gay and lesbian bestseller lists -- even if it's sometimes only a glancing blow. So that's also very good.

Basically, I want my readers to make the book buying decisions that allow them to keep purchasing my work and me to keep writing it.

Yes! And it's great when stuck on a plane for 9hrs. 100's of books to choose from with a tenth the weight.

That's fantastic! I really appreciate it when I have to travel. And I like the text-to-speech function, it's handy when I brush my teeth in the morning, comb my hair, etc. etc. I can practically read all the time :)

And then there's Fair Game, which is nearly always in the kindle top twenty, month after month. I don't know quite how you managed that one, but well played. I suspect part of it is the terrific pricing. $3.89 is a very tempting price for anyone on the fence.

Norma...I was just talking to some colleagues about how much I LOVE my kindle...there were three of us in a car driving to a field site in rural Ethiopia (it was a 10 hour drive) and we were all reading our Kindles LOL...I actually got the other two to get online once we arrived and made them buy the first two AE mysteryes novels, two gay men and no notion of Josh Lanyon...Sacrilege! :) We decided that those of us living in Sub-Saharan Africa should write a song along the lines of "Last night my Kindle saved my life". Mine doesn't have a name...maybe it should be Jesus...I am latin :O)

The battery on mine isn't lasting as long as it used to, either. It's on the charger every 2-3 days max, and it's supposed to last a couple of weeks. But it's seen heavy use for almost two years now, so that's not too bad for a gadget. I'm going to nurse it along as far as I can, but I've already got my eye on the $139 K3. It would be nice to have both the 3g and wifi, but not worth the extra $50 to me. The 3g signal isn't fantastic here, so it would really just be for when I'm not at home. And since I'm never not at home, I'd rather save that money for more books!

message 242: by Kari (new)

Kari Gregg (karigregg) | 2083 comments You know what I love? I DLed Mahjong to my K3. I always take my Kindle with me when I pick the boys up from the bus, but I time it so well that I'm only waiting 5 minutes, tops. Which means, unless I was reading before then, as soon as I started getting into the story, it was time to go.

Anyway, now I have the game. No more annoyance & interuptus frustration. ;-)

Also, a runner left his daughter at the finish line during the race my dh organizes last weekend (WTH?) and the game kept her entertained the 20 min it took for Dumbass Dad to get back. I was with the kid the whole time -- no way would I risk any kid getting even a glimpse at the TITLES of my smut, LOL -- so all she ever saw was the game, but for an emergency measure...That right there made it worth my 99 cents. :D

I also highly recommend all you Kindle owners immediately start a WTF? collection for comedy relief. For when you hear about or come across those rare books that are so absurdly bad they're funny. Those titles are worth their weight in gold. I cackle at just seeing the titles in that collection on mine. Much fun.

I'm kind of glad that my older than dirt Sony does not have wireless. I am afraid if I have the ability to buy a book the minute I think of it I might be flat broke in a week. As it stands now, i write down the titles my friends recommend and when I get home, I look them over with a cooler head before I decide to make purchases. I still spend a small fortune, but I like to think I make wiser decisions.

message 244: by Audra Rickman (new)

Audra Rickman | 23 comments My husband is not a reader, but he always wants to know what I'm reading on the Kindle because he can't see a cover and I seem to constantly have it open. Strangely enough he wants to read The Catcher in the Rye that I had to buy for book club last month.

message 245: by [deleted user] (new)

Barb there is no shame in book pimping...I do it all the time...I see it as a public service...PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW :)

I've never used the collections thingy...I should I've got like 500 books in my and it takes forever to find something.

message 246: by Blaine (new)

Blaine (blainedarden) Lora wrote: "

Yay! for another Sony user :D

Wireless on an e-reader is something I can easily live without. (Of course, that from someone who doesn't use the wireless on her laptop 'on the road' either, unless absolutely necessary, and refuses to browse on her phone)
Buying ebooks via laptop works well enough for me (and is just as impulsive sometimes), and it's not as if I'll run out of books, because I make sure there are an average of 100 books on it anyway.

I definitely use collections, but stopped putting books in more than one collection (unless I added both the series name and the author's name to my collections)

Note-taking would have been handy, because I tend to delete books after reading, and if I don't have pen and paper at hand and don't write down comments immediately (mostly while reading in bed), I sometimes forget what I liked/disliked about the book or even which book I read
So ... if I ever need a new one, note-taking will be on list of demands, wireless I can live without

There's something wrong with pimping?

O.O

Oh dear. Granted, I have writerly compadres (and sorry, they became compadres because I liked their books to start with, LOL) whom I whore for, but I don't limit it to friends. I mean...A lot of time a tweet for a book will pop up that looks interesting (or will appear in status updates/NR threads in groups/whatever), I buy it (I am a slut for the shiny) and if I like it? I'll pimp on twitter & here on GR What Are You Reading threads, etc, etc.

Honestly, I don't do it here in Josh's Q&A because it usually doesn't occur to me (sorry, Josh, LOL) but...I kinda thought that was the purpose? Letting like-minded folks know when you've struck gold?????

Perplexed.

That's a terrific compromise. A dedicated e-reader is nice, but they are a one-trick pony. An iPod Touch will give you more flexibility--just make sure you keep your charger with you!
