Pardon my language, but HOLY SH*T.

Kinda puts my December's couple few hundred in perspective, don't it? LMAO

Wow, that's awesome. Here's hoping you picked up a a battalion's worth of new fans to stage lovely raids on your backlist. ;-)

Most of that is just people who download anything free, but I'll hopefully pick up a few new readers in there.

I admit I was startled by the figure -- and Samhain doesn't supply authors the Nook numbers, so there would have been more there.

One thing for sure, one heck of a lot of people are potentially reading ebooks!

WOW, that is a lot of downloads!!

As far as mystery v. romance, well I'm not too picky as long as the romance involves mystery or the mystery also involves romance. Anything with a good plot.

...and while you're writing notes, what could 1 more hurt, right?

Are these free books a promo that the author agrees to or is it purely the publisher?

Have you ever thought about posting the first few chapters for a couple of your series (as with-Among the Living- )? Did Jordan ever comment on the effectiveness of this tool? It worked with me, I couldn't type my credit card numbers in fast enough.

I guess if the author objected, the publisher might discard the idea, but I was all in favor of it.

I generally do post the first chapter or so of everything on my website works page. I'm behind now, but then I'm behind everywhere! I've always found it effective promotion.

Frankly, I think there's nothing more effective than putting the work out there and letting readers sample. It's either the kind of thing they like or it isn't.

Excerpts are always greatly appreciated. Is Come unto these Yellow Sands your next story, or will there be anything else before?

Sparkle (sparkle00) Hey Heather C.
I did start Adrian English. I am really liking it so far. And don't threaten me woman - or should I call you girlie since you insist on calling me mom. ;)

Strange thing is that I always avoid them, because I don't want to be spoiled too much. I'll read reviews, but no excerpts. I'm weird that way.

I sometimes read them afterwards, when I'm not exactly certain which story was which (I sometimes read too many books in a row and I confuse them)

message 113: by Heather C (new)

Heather C (heathercook) Anita, I don't read reviews either. I will look and see what they rated a book but no what they wrote. I've found that it persuedes my own opinion. Also, I have trouble writing reviews for books I love.

So do I!!
I promised Josh a review of "Icecapade" when it came out, because of the glitch at Carina Press and his kind offer of help. But while I managed to write a review about "Someone killed his editor" this morning (when it was still fresh in my mind), I've yet to put my thoughts about "Icecapade" on paper. I keep starting, but can't seem to get any further ... it's sad, really.

then again, that's probably why I hated Themes in Literature so much. I read, I enjoy ... and then I forget, until I read it again and enjoy it again :)

message 115: by Heather C (new)

Heather C (heathercook) Haha. If you asked me what I thought of a book, I can go on and on. Ask me to write it down, I'm stupified!!

I totally agree. When I first started buying ebooks I bought from Amazon (Now I try to buy directly from the publisher) I don't know how many books I "sampled" from Amazon and just as I was really getting into it the little memo popped up "Click here to buy" I think I bought every book I sampled. It's how I first came across Adrien in Fatal Shadows and that one sample led me to buying all 5 books in the series.

This is why word of mouth is the number one thing writers rely on. The enthusiasm of a friend whose taste you already know is one of the most influential things out there -- even if the friend has trouble articulating why they love something so much.

I do the same thing. Excerpts make or break a book sale for me. The first couple of paragraphs usually determine whether I buy or not.

Reviews are best for bringing books that you might not otherwise know about to your attention. I've learned of the existence of many a book and author from reviews.

This Rough Magic should be out first -- I don't have anything on that one yet as I'm still finishing Yellow Sands.

It's mostly re-releases to start the year -- In a Dark Wood, Snowball in Hell, and then the new stuff starts.

Unless I write something specifically for Amazon, which I've been toying with.

Hi Josh, my first M/M story ever was The French Have a Word for It, so you popped my literary cherry, woot! I loved the imagery, I felt like I was in France with Colin and Thomas.

I need to get out of Highlanders world and back to some M/M lovin soon, I'm having withdrawals!!

Welcome, Heather S. Glad you enjoyed TFHAW. That was a story I particularly enjoyed because I totally emmersed myself in the research. I really "felt" Paris in that one. I wrote it really fast. Two days, I think!

Jon (jon_michaelsen) Hey, Josh - finished Fair Game last night; My favorite thus far of everything I've read written by you; here's what I wrote in my review:

Incredible! I've read several novels by Josh Lanyon and I must say Fair Game is by far his greatest!!! I'm a sucker for a good, solid mystery - a who-dunnit that keeps you guessing until the very end; and the romantic friction between Elliott & Tucker is awesome, so realistic and vivid, each with their own macho hang-ups; the characters come a live in their dialog and mannerisms - the romance these two manyly-men have is what I craved to read years ago; an exceptional mystery - tight and first-rate; the suspense/thriller ride is top-notch - you will not be disappointed!!!

Thanks for a wonderful thrill-ride, Josh!!!

Muffett | 1 comments Hi Josh,

Just a quick note to let you know I was one of the bajillions who downloaded The Dickens with Love last month. I wasn't sure what to expect as it was my first book from you...and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Which then led me down the path to eagerly consume all the Adrien English books, Holmes and Moriarity, Dangerous Ground -- and pretty much the rest of your backlist. LOL I only have a few left and I've slowed the breakneck reading pace so I can truly savor the books I have left until your next release. You've definitely made it to my auto-buy and re-read lists. :) Thank you and please keep writing!

Why thank you! And welcome, Muffet. ;-)

It's always a pleasure to hear that people are reading and enjoying. I think TDWL is a good story to start with, especially for readers who aren't particularly into mystery.

Thank you for those kind words. Hope you'll continue to read and enjoy.

JOSH, I feel cheated. That was the best story, I wish it was 300+ pages longer. LOL

I just LOVED it. Which others of your stories are like this one? I NEED to read them. I have so many of your books on my TBR pile.

So glad you enjoyed it, Sparkle. I think the Petit Morts are different from everything else I do. For one thing, they have a touch of supernatural and for another, they're a little...bitier. A little... bittersweet?

Anyway, I would rec another Petit Mort. Maybe someone else has a better idea?

message 141: by Sparkle (new)

Sparkle (sparkle00) Lil Grogan,
Yes I did read that one too. I am going down the list and reading them all. So far I liked Other People's Weddings the best. I liked the bittersweet as Josh calls it. I didn't think there was that much supernatural - then again I read PNR with vampires and zombies. I see the difference between Josh and JCP. I like them both but they are different.

I am just going to read ALL of Josh's books. LOL
Just wondered which one I should read next.
