The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (must read before book 2)?

Question - my library doesn't carry the first book in the series but does carry book 2 (The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag). Can you read book 2 without reading book 1 first? Will I be all confused?

I picked it up from library but will return it if it is "necessary" to read them in order. I don't want ot miss anything from book 1.

Peanut I dont believe you will. I think the characters are the same but the storyline will be different. I am guessing the author may also backtrack with some info on the characters for those who havent read in order. That is just a guess though.
