Bob Laerhoven | 1 comments Hi all,

I'm a member of the James Mason Book Club but I'm also a Belgian(Flemish)author, so my apologies in advance if this message contains errors: I'm obviously not a native speaker or writer :-). My Award winning novel "De wraak van Baudelaire" (Baudelaire's Revenge) has been very recently (April 15th)published in hardcover by Pegasus Books in the US. "Baudelaire's Revenge" has also been translated into French (La Vengeance de Baudelaire) and Russian (can't write the title in Cyrillic :-)). An Italian translation is in the making. Although not even out for a week, there are already reviews in Publishers Weekly, New York Times Book Review, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal and Shelf Awareness Pro. Here are some excerpts

Reviews

“[An] intense historical crime thriller. The intricate plot, menacing atmosphere, and rich evocations of period Paris have undeniable power.” (Publishers Weekly)

Van Laerhoven packs much complexity into 256 pages, giving this historical mystery the heft of a far longer work ( …) The book’s main preoccupation is the conclusive demonstration that everyone is guilty of something—the only mystery is, to what degree? The flowers of evil, sketched in lurid botanical detail…. (Kirkus Reviews)

Belgian author Bob Van Laerhoven presents a view of Paris that would cause most romantics to hurl themselves into the Seine. It’s 1870, the eve of the Franco-Prussian war. The poor are living in misery and the working classes are growing desperate, but the intellectuals and aristocrats (“people without soul or conscience”) are avidly pursuing their debaucheries and an artistic killer is embellishing his obscene handiwork with verses of “Les Fleurs du Mal”. This bizarre case appeals to the dissolute sensibility of Commissioner Paul Lefèvre whose own twin passions are poetry and women of “sinister unpredictability and uncivilized morals.” Lefèvre’s philosophical discussions with artists and poets and a creepy Belgian dwarf are fascinating(….)By the end of this decadent tale the sadomasochistic vibe has become so stupefying, it’s almost a relief when the Prussians arrive at the gates… (Marilyn Stasio – New York Times Book Review)

Published for the first time in English, this roman policier isn't so much a straight detective story (although there are two detectives in it) as an evocation of a mind-set that now seems extravagant: the 19th-century poet's fascination with sex and death. It's no wonder this title won the Hercule Poirot Prize: the author is Belgian, as is the prize, and the twisted plot is as complicated as Agatha Christie's most convoluted mystery. Mystery aficionados will love this pastiche of Wilkie Collins and Edgar Allan Poe (...) - David Keymer, Modesto, CA (Library Journal).

Although rather lurid and a bit hard to stomach in places, this gritty, detail-rich historical mystery novel involves the reader in a subtle narrative web. Van Laerhoven weaves in some of this historical period's favorite supernatural elements--magic, exotic poisons, séances and ghosts--to create an eerie, fin-de-siècle atmosphere worthy of Poe, Joris-Karl Huysmans and other "decadent" writers of that era. This complex mystery from an award-winning Belgian author joins history and literary history to create a sly, smart revenge tale. (Tom Lavoie - Shelf Awareness Pro)

“The Belgian Boris Akunin…Dark and entertaining.” (Goodreads)

Edward Jamieson (edwardjamieson) | 20 comments The Godless - Emancipated Soul by Suren Fant

I'm glad to present you my new book called 'The Godless - Emancipated Soul'.
I worked on the creation of this book about three years. I had a contract with the Front Porch Publisher, but it closed down lately and I decided to self-publish it.
For fiction lovers, filled with supernatural power. New view about the beginning of life on Earth.

Centuries ago, when Earth was not under the control of God, it was ruled by a cruel and heartless creature called Neuron. Coming to our planet, God saw how Neuron treated his subordinates. God and Satan decided to take Earth under their wing. It was very difficult mission. Afterwards, God and Satan adapted all people and their emotions.

Time passed. History became a myth, and the myth became a tale, then forgotten forever.

In the twenty-first century, a young man from a wealthy family discovers hidden potential within him. With his new abilities, Aren is sure there isn't anything to prevent him anymore from getting what he wants in life, but soon the hunting for him begins.

After a mother and her 8-year-old son were murdered -- the little boy was burned beyond recognition -- a man who might have been innocent was shot down by the FBI. This is the true accounts as we know them to be, with numerous questions on what REALLY happened on August 3, 2013.

Paul (paullev) | 24 comments My novelette, "The Chronology Protection Case" - inspired by Steven Hawking's "chronology protection conjecture" - was first published in Analog Magazine in September 1995. The novelette was a finalist for the Nebula and Sturgeon Awards, reprinted five times - including in the currently best-selling Mammoth Book of Time Travel - and made into an Edgar nominated radio play by Mark Shanahan. The novelette is cited in Paul J. Nahin's A Writer's Guide to the Real Science of Plausible Time Travel as the only recent treatment in science fiction of Hawking's conjecture, and has been on the syllabus of a writing class at the College of DuPage in Illinois.

It's now free on Wattpad: http://www.wattpad.com/story/11597492...

The novelette was also made into a short movie by Jay Kensinger in 2002. It was recut, with a new extended ending by Levinson and Kensinger, in 2013, and is currently available on iTunes (not quite for free, though): https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/chr...

Howard Loring (howardloringgoodreadscom) | 284 comments My latest book, a compilation of stand-alone short stories dealing with the Elastic Limit of Time first published in March, has been revised, sans those pesky errors that got through & were thereby present in the original edition.

It's unique in that the presentation, an overall examination of Human History, demonstrates the theme, for Time, being linear, may be viewed from either direction and for this reason the book can be read backwards, starting with the last chapter and working your way forward.

You see, it's the same story from either perspective, so reading in sequence presents the adventure while starting at the end demonstrates how it happened.

Of course, as each chapter is a stand-alone short story dealing with Time Travel, they can also be read in any order for just a weird view of certain events in Human History, as I've noted.

Anyway, it's up on Amazon, etc. & the eBook will soon follow & Smashwords.com has lots of downloadable venues from which to choose, only $2.99.

I should point out that while none of my books are sequels & can be read in any order, they do connect & this one explains who the 'old man' in the 2nd book is & also what he did in the 1st, but you don't need to know that to enjoy this adventure tale.

In the Time Travel genre this is known as Paradox & my Epic Fables explain that concept, also.
