Ian Miller | 25 comments Since I wrote a blog on the topic (http://wp.me/p2IwTC-3W ) I have to disagree with Howard on endings. I am writing a series in what I call a future history, and I cannot have all endings of the sort "and they all lived happily ever after, except for the bad guys" because if that happened, first, nothing is in place for the future books, but more importantly, if the reader KNOWS the main protagonists are going to live happily ever after, I think there is somewhat less tension in the story. Read the blog post, please, and tell me if you think I am wrong.

My Haley (MyHaley) | 1 comments Amazon Kindle has chosen widow of Alex Haley, Dr. My Haley's book, The Treason of Mary Louvestre, as a Kindle Special and the download is now FREE for a limited time!

From the widow of Alex Haley and collaborator of the award-winning epic ROOTS, comes a new American epic from the Civil War. The Treason of Mary Louvestre is based on the true story of a seamstress slave from the Confederate town of Norfolk, Virginia. When her owner gets involved with modifications to the ironclad CSS Virginia, Mary copies the plans and sets out to commit treason against the South. Facing certain death as a spy if caught, she treks two hundred miles during the bitter winter of 1862 to reach the office of Union Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, where she hands over the plans. Mary's act of bravery is ably told by Haley, using a rich narrative and characters drawn from that pinnacle era of American history. First there was Roots, now there is The Treason of Mary Louvestre.

Review by Bruce Holland Rogers:

"First off, some disclosure: Kaye Linden is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program of the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts. I teach fiction writing at NILA, and Kaye was my student. I'm not reviewing this book as a stranger, but instead as someone who saw this collection of stories develop story-by-story and draft-by-draft.

Take my review with a grain of salt if you wish.

Kaye Linden's stories are richly imagined, crisply written, and worth your time and money. In the title character, Ma, Kaye has created a character who belongs to the urban world as much as the outback, and who reflects not so much aboriginal culture as original culture, the culture each of us invents for our own purposes from the material of the world we happen to have been born into. Come on in for a drink, a story, and a character who makes her own rules and invents her own forms of magic.

I love this book. "

George Bernstein (suspenseguy) | 97 comments My newly released 2nd novel, A 3rd TIME TO DIE (Kindle & print at: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0989468100) has garnered 5 quick 4 & 5-Star reviews. Like TRAPPED (my first at: http://amzn.to/P2xxaT) the common thread is "I couldn't put it down." Here's a review by Diane O'Keefe on Amazon, that should make any author proud:

"Bearing in mind that I like paranormal romance novels, I was pretty convinced that I would like this novel, especially since I also like horse riding.
The big surprise was that I never expected it to be comparable to great writers of this genre such as Dean Koontz or Stephen King.
"A Third Time to Die really delivered, providing an intriguing storyline and very believable characters. As I reached midway in the book, I was turning pages almost as fast as I could read to find out what would happen next. I enjoyed it immensely and am glad I tried it out. I look forward to more, and am delighted the author already has another book out. Time to download it to my Kindle!"

Both novels available in Kindle & Print, and Amazon is offering both print versions at discount

Well, since cover #3 seems to have the picture of the man flipped, for me that one's automatically out. So the choice would be between #1 and #2, and with that, I chose #1 because it has the most contrast.

Neil Ostroff (httpgoodreadscomneil_ostroff) | 271 comments Reviews speak for themselves

DROP OUT http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FX0K7U continues to pull in five star reviews from all over the world and I’m still getting an average of ten to fifteen emails a day from readers telling me how much the story has affected them. It took a powerful experience such as watching my friend die quickly from cancer to have forged such an intense and emotional story. Though the actual plot of the story is fiction, I’m continually getting notes from people asking if I really went through what happens in the story.

Like all good fiction the story is based on actual events but the details are imaginary. As a writer, I try and capture the human experience with words and when I’ve done it properly (as I believe in the case of this book) the reward is beyond material.

As I finish my latest book (a dystopian sci-fi) I’m gearing up to start another literary fiction. Unlike DROP OUT, this new novel will deal with what happens right after you die, not the emotions prior, as is the case with DROP OUT. We are all curious about what happens when we pass away. Though I do have a brief outline written I’m excited to see where this concept will lead and what plots will develop. I’m planning on the novel taking nine months to write.

Until then, here is another five star review for DROP OUT recently placed on Amazon. Please read the book. It will affect you. To learn more about me and my books please check out my blog: ALWAYS WRITING

5.0 out of 5 stars Drop Out, August 31, 2013
By
E M Bahnsen - See all my reviews
This review is from: Drop Out (Kindle Edition)
This was an interesting and unique story, fast paced, heart pounding, with realistic and well-rounded characters that hit home.

The hero Nathan Cruz, a Philadelphia Phillies fan, survived that horrific day on 09/11/2001 in New York City. He is able to save other's lives, except those that mean the most to him: his pregnant fiancé and both parents in Tower Two. He is badly scarred - physically and emotionally - and lost...so he drops out of society.

Ten years' later, Nathan lives a solitary life on an old boat, growing his own herbs, and fishing for his own meals in the Florida Keys. His only companion is a chicken who lives on the boat with him.

Nathan doesn't seek shelter when a Hurricane is approaching. He has nothing to live for anyway. Despite his boat being destroyed and losing what few possessions he owned, he survives. He meets the only other human being brave enough to stay behind.

Miriam has her own heart-wrenching story and only days to share it with Nathan. She enables Nathan to embrace his physical scars, to care again, to feel again, to love again. For ten years, Nathan lived in the darkness of his survival guilt. Within two days, Miriam helps Nathan to see the lightness of life.

99 year old aboriginal shaman, Ma, owns a Sydney cafe where the lonely and homeless gather. Each evening, Ma, or one of her quirky patrons shares a tale. Of the magic realism genre, these linked tales are dedicated to the world's immigrants and refugees because Australian author, Kaye Linden, understands that pain of separation from the "home" land. An entertaining read that inspires on many levels.

Jeffrey Kern (jkern) | 4 comments The latest 5 star review simply says it all!
Great guide! Will be showing my golf-loving family!, September 9, 2013
By Katie - See all my reviews
This review is from: Golf Made Easy! a Backward Approach to Learning Golf... or Is It? (Paperback)
Golf Made Easy by Jeffery Kern is a GREAT golf guide for beginners and the like for golfing. Over the past year my family has picked up golfing on vacations and I had my first ever lesson. I enjoyed it, at first, but then suddenly it became so difficult to play, I couldn't remember anything I learned, and I just wasn't having fun anymore.

When I heard about Kern's book in learning golf...backwards, I was intrigued. The basis of this book is that he teaches golf starting with putting and working up to driving. It's the opposite how you are taught any other time, but as I read the book I was surprised how much sense it made! Learning the small and working up to the big just makes sense... this way I slowly work up to understanding putting more into each swing and how to do so. Why wouldn't you work up to the full drive?

The book itself is really nicely laid out. There are a lot of pictures to go with each different teaching - pictures of clubs, ways to hold, ways to pitch and drive, etc. Kern also gives a quick overview of how to choose the best clubs for you, golf terms and rules of the game, how to check if your club and ball are manufactured correctly, etc. There were a lot of things discussed that I wasn't aware of previously, and even things I had been taught before now felt like I would retain the information much better after having it laid out before me.

This book is less than 100 pages and is such a great guide. The chapters and content are organized well, and I know it's a book I will be referring to again and again as I go golfing.

I really enjoyed this book and not only will I read it again, but I am definitely bringing it on my next trip with my family so I can have everyone read it as well. I think they will really gain a lot from it.

I highly recommend this book.

Mike Meyer | 103 comments Free today, September 11 and tomorrow, September 12. THE SURVIVAL OF MARVIN BAINES.
CONTEMPORARY/HUMOROUS FICTION COLLECTION BOOK TWO - AN ENDEARING STORY OF WHAT IF
one man's irreverent yet heartfelt quest to cope with the dysfunctional midlife crisis that has suddenly enveloped him, where romantic fantasy and the reality of marriage collide.

Marvin Baines seemingly has it all: a loving family and a great job. He is about to turn forty, and just like that, the realization hits him--his own mortality is straight up the road. That's not his only problem. Suddenly he is unable to distinguish fantasy from reality, and his often-quirky decision-making causes his whole life to begin to unravel. All he wants is an escape from his humdrum life. What he gets is something quite unexpected.

Peggy Rothschild | 54 comments Got a great review of Clementine's Shadow from the-drunken-druid.blogspot.ie/2013/09/review

Review of Peggy Rothschild's "Clementine's Shadow"

Set in California over the course of one night about the search for a child who is abducted by a killer. Deputy Casey Lang is on the case to find the missing child. There is much to enjoy about this novel. During the search, old secrets come out of the shadows! The author's prose is elegant without being turgid. She draws beautiful pictures with her words. This book has a sober and reflective tone that makes you really fall care for the main characters. I believe that fiction is in some way its own reality which is just as important as the mundane world we live in. "Clementine's Shadow" verifies this for me. This book was a joy to read.

Stephen Biro (stephenbiro) | 9 comments Dialogue With The Devil is free 9/14 to 9/15

Good luck reading it.

http://www.amazon.com/.../dp/B00E23WH...

The greatest trick that the Devil has ever pulled off was to convince the world He does not exist. Now, you will know He exists.

For one man on a life-long pursuit for the truth, a chilling relationship with the Fallen Angel brings him a soul shattering insight into the world we live in. Will his DIALOGUE WITH THE DEVIL bring enlightenment or only madness and suffering?

DIALOGUE WITH THE DEVIL contains transcriptions by a writer who got pulled into the battle for his very soul, giving him a glimpse into the larger battle that rages between Heaven and Hell. It's a War in which most of mankind lives in total ignorance.

That writer, Stephen Biro (author of HELLUCINATION - A MEMOIR), is again doing what he does best: Peering behind the veil and fighting the Devil on his own ground. Here, Biro searches for reasons to the madness of humanity by asking direct questions of Satan.

DIALOGUE WITH THE DEVIL became possible when Satan found no more fight in the human spirit. He grew weary of the falling of mankind and decided to offer up the Truth -- His Truth, His manipulations, His deviousness. Satan has been altering mindsets from the very beginning, and this book reveals, straight from Satan's mouth, the plan for mankind's slow, downward spiral into Hell.

In this book, the Devil has evened the playing field by offering His history, His deceitful machinations. Will you read this book, no matter how unnerving, and use its startling information to prevent your fall from God’s good graces?

Your book was really powerful and the Dialogue you had with the Devil is just amazing. This is going to be a book that is going to take the world by storm, seriously. I don't tell that to anyone and have been writing for over twenty years and let me tell you, there is nothing out there like this. Mitch Hyman, Author of "Hitmen in Paradise"

It's funny (I choked several times on my beer reading it.) It's mind blowing and Satan was just so chaotic and manipulative, I loved reading it. It's unlike anything I have ever read, yet again. Jack Donelly, Author of "Masters of Taboo"

I wasn't expecting this... I loved Hellucination but I love this more! It's a totally different style and very powerful. This is a brave book - it's like nothing I've read before. I really enjoyed it and it leaves the reader questioning...well, almost everything! Nigel Lata-Burston, Author of "Plastic Bacon, Toast and the upcoming Mr. VHS"

Powerful! There was more times, I had to stop reading because this was actually scaring the shi* out of me. It was like reading the Exorcist back in 1972 when everyone was freaking out over it... but that was 1972! It's 2013, we're jaded, used to horror daily but this scared me completely. Jim VanBebber, Director of "The Manson Family and Deadbeat at Dawn"

Peggy Rothschild | 54 comments Another big Woo-Hoo. Author and Amazon Vine Voice Reviewer, Michael Draper, gave a 4-star review to Clementine's Shadow:

Peggy Rothschild's well written novel brings us Casey Lang, who obtains a job with the sheriff's department in the California High Desert. She had a bad experience with firing her weapon on an occasion where a child was involved.

In her heart she wished she would never have to use her weapon in a situation where a child was involved again. However, a six-year-old girl has disappeared from a summer concert and since Casey is the only member of the concert with experience in a kidnapping, she is placed in charge of the investigation.

I was captivated by the image of the empty mines and the setting of cactus and sagebrush. The jacket cover was also well done and made me wonder what the story was going to be like.

Casey Lang is an appealing character and one who the reader can feel empathy for. She leaves the big city and horrific incidents that can happen there and then becomes the person in charge of an investigation of a six-year-old. It's almost as if her worst nightmare is being relived.

There is also a well done surprise toward the conclusion of the story. This will entertain the reader and make the story more memorable.

In short, Peggy Rothschild has put together a nice mixture of suspense, interesting characters and a vivid setting to create a well written story and one the reader will enjoy.
