Sorry, Sarah, I was "away" or I would have jumped on your juicy bait immediately. I'm sooo jealous!!!! I've heard it's a brilliant play, too. Then again, I know it would be lost on me, as I'd be squirming in my seat, alternately embarassed and thrilled at the same time.

Front row seats? Really? Do report back. I understand why he's doing it, too. He wants to break out of the box he's been put in. He seems like he's going about it in a respectable way, too. It's not like he's posing for Playgirl (yet).

message 52: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) It's actually not the nudity that's going to make me uncomfortable. It's just a really, really intense and emotionally disturbing show.

message 53: by [deleted user] (new)

Gack! Naked HP would make me hurl, and then feel dirty...

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

I know. It would feel sooo wrong, yet sooo right. I'm kidding!!! I've heard it's an excellent show and I give Daniel credit for taking it on. That takes, well, balls. Sorry, had to go there. Isn't the premise of Equus that he's erotically obsessed with a horse. Something like that?

message 55: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) He's a boy who is both religiously and sexually fixated on horses, yes. Discovering the reasons for this fixation is the whole point of the play. Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon) plays his psychiatrist, and he's got some dysfunction of his own. There is a nude scene but from what I understand it is very brief and its context is much more disturbing than the nudity itself. This is a heavy, heavy drama and I'm probably going to need to be drunk to get through it.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, that sounds very good. I love plays that dive in like that and make you uncomfortable. That's what art should do. But just to be safe--drink up!

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Nope, couldn't do it.

Is that where those gag reflex activating photos of him naked with a horse came from?

No offense Mich, I like HP and him as HP, and maybe him as something else, but NOT naked...yeesh!

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, that's where those photos with the horse come from. I can send you a link to one if you're in need of a good gag. :)

He's not for everyone, only weirdos like me. And I really didn't develop the crush until the 5th movie came out (before that I was Ron all the way). Then he was all angsty and grown-up, and well, I won't go on. I'm not actually sure I want to see him naked, either. He's just a little too close to 18...

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

No thank you very much, Mich!

My teenager within would have chosen Ron as well, in all of the films. I always wanted Hermione to get wit Ron...

message 60: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I always wanted Hermione to get wit Ron...

Ames, READ THE BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For cryin' out loud! LOL

And really, the nudity isn't gratuitous. It's part of a very psychologically disturbing scene and is only a couple of minutes long. It's not like he's walking around the in the whol play with his "wand" hanging out.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

Wait--Amelia hasn't read the books????? I think my heart just stopped beating.

message 62: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) No! She hasn't!

message 63: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) SARAH IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT EQUUS!!! Oh, what a wonderfully psychological play! Daniel Radcliffe is very smart to take advantage of being offered the role (or however he got cast--I suppose he has enough fame that he could have said, "Hey B'Way, gimme!" and they would have). It is a VERY complex role and you have to be young to do it, so the opportunity is only there for a short window of time...

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Mich, where have you been...I know, I know, read the books! I've heard very different things about them, but I enjoyed the Eragon books and I get loads of shit for that, so I probably would really like them. I just haven't gotten round to it. Mainly because I have this aversion to *most* avid JKR fans. Some of the book threads on this site are shocking! There was one devoted to what they wanted and/or perceived to happen AFTER the last book, like after the NO MORE POTTER BOOKS, just their own little fantasies about it. Um, get a mentoring LIFE people!! Sorry, tyrade over.

I suppose it isn't fair to JKR or the books to not read them because some of her fanatical fans freak me the hell out, huh?

Okay, I'll put them all in my moleskine right now!

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

There are 7 all together right? If so, got em!

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, there are 7 glorious books! Uh oh, am I starting to sound like a freaky fanatical fan? I am a huge fan, but not a freak. At least not a total one. I just love getting immersed in the the HP books. JKR has created a wonderful world to fall into and escape from real life. And they are the only books I've reread repeatedly. There is no other series that has held my attention like that. But I also know how you feel. I know plenty of people that refuse to read the HP books because they are so hyped and commercialized. It's always hard to get into something after the fact. You can do it! If they are in your moleskine, it's written in stone, right?

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

In stone, right!

No, you're not a freak. I get your love for it. I am that way about Tolkien, I re-read H & LotR every year or so. I can never get enough elves and dwarves... I just don't debate who aught to have hooked up after the fact and weird stuff like that with my LotR pals. :)

I own all of the HP movies, apart from the one that hasn't come out on DVD yet. I do love the world JKR created. I'll give them a shot, just for you Mich! :)

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

Awww, that makes me feel good, Amelia. And I can't wait to hear what you think of them. I must confess that when the last HP book came out, I was a part of a group that discussed all things HP through my local paper. It was so fun, and what eventually let me to Goodreads. I still have a little discussion group with my HP pals on Yahoo, though we do not discuss who hooked up after the fact, etc. We talk more about any goings-on with JKR, the movies, or discuss past books.

Jackie "the Librarian" I have all the Harry Potter books, including a copy of the first one in French.

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

Lucky! I have them all, too, just not one in french. I have all hardcover, but I've been toying with the idea of buying the softcover, too. You know, for reading copies and such.

message 71: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Ames, all 5 of the HP movies that have been released so far are out on DVD. The 6th movie will be in theatres this fall.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't get my excited, Sarah!! Even the mention of the 6th movie makes me want to wet my pants. Whenever a new movie comes out, I make a big production of it and usually see it 3 times in 2 days with multiple people. But, that could also involve my fixation on Daniel Radcliffe...

Jackie "the Librarian" I collect postcards in a photo album. I don't do anything fancy, not scrapbooking, don't get me wrong.
But if someone sends me a postcard, in it goes. And I buy myself postcards, at museums especially, of the art.
One time, I mailed myself a postcard, from my vacation self to my at-home self.

message 74: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Me too, Shell!! And HBP was my favorite so I'm REALLY curious about the movie. I'll be there at midnight, fo sho. I also re-read all the books before a movie comes out. So about six weeks before the release date, all my other books will be set aside and I'll start out with Sorcerer's Stone.

Jackie "the Librarian" I've re-read the Harry Potter books about 6 times, a re-reading each time a new book comes out.
I'll probably reread them for the movies, now.

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, Jackie, that is the uncoolest thing I think I've ever heard--sending a postcard to yourself? I love it! I think you might take the uncoolest of the uncool title away from Clackamas (for collecting the giant ball of used gum). We may need a tie-breaker.

message 77: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I've re-read them for both books and movies but in the past, there was usually a book coming out around the same time as a movie.

I was so sad to see the series end. I wonder if that is why Twilight is so popular? Because people needed something new to anticipate?

Jackie "the Librarian" Really? Postcards are uncooler than dusty balls of old gum?
The gum is definitely grosser, though.

message 79: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) No, the gum thing was way uncooler than the postcard thing. The postcard thing is slightly odd, the gum thing was freaking weird.

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah--you are a woman after my own heart!!! Sigh.

I used to reread all the books whenever a new one came out, too. I hadn't thought of doing that for a new movie, though. The 6th movie comes out in November, right? I have time...

HBP was your favorite, huh? My favorite used to be GOF, but now I think it's POA. It could be OOTP next...

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Yeah, POA and GOF were my favorites until HBP came out. I LOVE HBP. I love the dragon in Harry's chest (Amy, you'll see what I mean). I love the Horcrux stuff (fascinating). I love the memories. And I always thought Snape was the most complicated character and thus my favorite, so I liked his arc in that one. I'm not going to say anything else because I don't want to spoil it for Amy but you know what I mean.

AMY... Please, please, please read the books before the movie comes out. The sixth book is soooooooo good and there's no way the film can touch it. And I don't want you to be spoiled for the book.

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe sending a postcard to yourself is just quirky and fun? You're right--ball of gum is definitely the uncoolest.

I was sad to see the HP series end, too. I haven't been able to reread the 7th book yet because it makes me too sad. And yes, I think that's why Twilight is so popular. The people want more!!!! And it's definitely worthy, so, we'll see...

The other books I liked almost as much as HP was the His Dark Materials series by Pullman. Read those?

message 83: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) No. I bought The Golden Compass ages ago but then I read that the author purposely intended them to be a slam against religion, so it lost my interest.

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) (I haven't re-read 7 yet either.)

Jackie "the Librarian" No, me either, haven't re-read 7.

message 86: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Okay, I'm super uncool because this conversation is making me sad.

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't believe everything you read! I heard the same thing AFTER I read them. I don't know if that was his intention or not, but it's definitely controversial from that viewpoint. But the story is excellent in my mind. And there's nothing wrong with questioning religion some--sometimes that can strengthen faith, too. The unexamined faith is sometimes the weakest faith. Not to get all religious on your ass. JKR even said that she has struggled with faith throughout her life, and that is reflected in HP, too. Even if Pullman did attack religion, let's hope he had a good reason.

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I'd done the gum thing on a smaller scale. I have a picture of my roommate holding my alarm clock in the air by the gum wad (I'd take it out at night and stick it on the growing wad), so I maybe have to vote for the post card thing. Not saving them, but mailing them to yourself...yep. ;)

Well, all I know is, I have all of the HPs on DVD except the one I can't get yet. I always get them straight away. Though, I thought the other one had come out recently in theatres. No, clearly I was wrong. But, you two, when does it come out?

I'm afraid that there is talk of nothing other than The Dark Knight, (since the new Batman comes out in two weeks) around our house.

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

It's making me sad, too. I better log off and stare wistfully at my HP books now. Later, my HP friends! To be continued...

message 90: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) http://www.snopes.com/politics/religi...

Hey, the dude has a right to believe what he wants and to write books about what he believes. That's cool. I just don't have the desire to read it.

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

I LOVE Dragons!

I bought the Golden Compass series as well, but haven't read them yet. I liked the movie though, and figured I'd love the books, but I just can't seem to get them all in my face fast enough! More and More and More keep piling on and my Moleskine has 7 1/2 pages of "I wants" ready to be added to my "to reads". UGH

Jackie "the Librarian" Wait, what part of this thread is making you sad, Sarah? That the HP books are finished? That Pullman wrote a fantasy that attacks religion? That I send postcards to myself???

message 93: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Ames, there are five HP movies out on DVD. The most recent one is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . It's actually sitting right here; I'm looking right at it.

The sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince comes out in theatres in November.

I urge you to read the series before then.

message 94: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) The Harry Potter part, Jackie!

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

What, is he the "anti-CS Lewis"?

Never mind...I don't think I want to know. I don't want to taint it. I don't want to read things into it that I don't see on my own. You know? Just because he meant some symbolism, doesn't mean I'm going to see that.

message 96: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Yes, he's the anti-Narnia guy.

Oh. You don't want to know.

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

Cheeky!

message 98: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I love that feature!

Jackie "the Librarian" At least you can re-read the books, and see the movies over and over, Sarah. We'll always have Harry Potter...

Have you read Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones? It's got that same British humor and sensibility as Harry Potter, in my opinion.
Howl's Moving Castle

I wonder what Rowling is going to write next!

message 100: by [deleted user] (new)

It's in the Moleskine, just after the HPs, Jacks!
