Leigh (llogan24) | 28 comments Other than the beautiful words he told Merit in Chapters 7 and 8, my favorite part had to be the end where they finished fighting and he just grabbed her and kissed her hard, and then again. That totally made the book 5 stars for me. LOVED it that he was willing to show that he still really cared for Merit.

Shannon C. I was just chatting w/another friend about this book, and she pointed out something that irked her and I realized it annoyed me too. Did anyone else notice that Merit called Ethan a 'boy'? Seemed immature and unrealistic given her age (27-28). I used to refer to guys I dated as 'boys' back in high school and *maybe* college. Ethan is most definitely a 'man'--he's 400 years old! This seemed like something you'd come across in a young adult book vs an adult urban fantasy.

And the conflict with him blowing her off after chapter eight seemed contrived. I didn't totally buy it. He ususally makes good decisions--thinking them through. Given how valuable she is as a Sentinel and powerful vamp in the making for Cadogan, he should have thought things through and not gotten involved in the first place if he didn't think it was good for the house. And then to have Lacey there immediately was a total 'screw you'. Even if he didn't mean it that way, he's a smart guy. He should have anticipated the ramifications. It's almost like he was trying to push her to go to another house or join the RG or something. If he had done that to me, I don't know that I would have stayed and continued to trust him as a leader. The whole thing just didn't seem to fit what we know of his character.

message 105: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) Shannon, the 'boy' thing irritated me too -I wrote about it (extensively, OK maybe it was a rant) in my review of the first book.

As for Ethan's behaviour, I put it down to a lack of social skills when it comes to his personal life. He doesn't have any proper friends -he has allies and employees. I don't think he's had a serious long term relationship either, at least he doesn't act like he has.

when did that happen when she called him boy, forgot.???

Literary Ames (amyorames) Merit calls all men 'boys'. I don't understand why.

Lori {Romancing the Dark Side} (romancingthedarkside) | 30 comments Besides the infamous Chapter 8 scene, I enjoyed the scene in Chapter 21 where Ethan and Merit are training in front of everyone and she asks for music and ultimately beats Ethan.

Chest heaving, sweat dripping from the exertion, I walked over and stared down at him, not entirely sure about the protocol. What do you do when you've finally beaten your teacher at his own game?

I decided to enjoy it. I let my mouth curt into a girl and arched an eyebrow at him, "Why Sullivan, I think I just kicked your ass."

His eyes were wide, emerald, and decidedly shocked. But even there on the ground he smiled up at me with pride and a kind of boyish pleasure.
When I'd stepped over his body, I offered him a hand. He took it, and I pulled him to his feet.

"Always remember," he whispered to me, "that you are an uncommon soldier, whatever they say. And you are quite a thing to behold."

HELLO!!! ;)

message 109: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (llogan24) | 28 comments Lori - that was a FANTASTIC scene!!!! I love that she bested him, and that she let him know that she had overheard what that beyotch had said about Merit being a common soldier. Good for Merit, on all counts!!! :)

Lori {Romancing the Dark Side} (romancingthedarkside) | 30 comments I know! I love that she's not one of those whinning heroines who feels sorry for herself. Love that she kicks butt!

That's a great scene!

Good idea, maybe that explains it in part. Although I still think he would have considered the ramifications of the fact that she is an employee and an important asset to Cadogan that he wouldn't want to lose.

message 112: by Heather (new)

Heather | 16 comments I don't mind that Merit calls men boys. I am her age and I do the same thing. I don't think it really means anything. boys/men one and the same to me.

As for Ethan I don't think he has felt this way in a long time, maybe never, about a girl. It has competely thrown him and when he acted out it really upset him. He has an obligation to his vampires and he could have really messed things up. He feels he doesn't have the benefit of giving in to his emotions. That being said I don't think he should have cut and run like that. Merit improving her fighting skills would have been a better solution.

message 113: by Heather (new)

Heather | 16 comments Something didn't make sense to me. Ethan tells Merit that he planned this meeting with Lacy 6 months ago and it was to go over finances, but when Lacey arrives Ethan thanks her for coming on such short notice. That was the main reason that Merit thought that he called Lacey back.

message 114: by Amanda (new)

Amanda The Book Slayer (amanda_the_book_slayer) | 22 comments I agree that there are a ton of great scenes. Of course Chapter 8 you can't help but love. I like all the scenes mentioned and was trying to think of another one that I enjoyed. So on that note. I loved the Pec-tacle scene. I thought it was a fun way to put it.

"On the other hand, they're the ones creating this pec-tacle."
"You know, like spectacle"-she paused to point at her breats-"but with more dude nipples. Do you disagree?"
I returned my gaze to the Master vampire who was currently leaning over to pick up a bokken, a wooden practice weapon, from the mat. Muscles clenched and tensed as he moved, nipples pert on his chest. "far be it from me to disagree, I said. "They have created quite a pec-tacle. And when they put it out there like that, they can hardly expect us not to look."

I also enjoyed the scene farther down where she preforms the Katas fast and Ethan gets all worked up over that. Go Merit!!!

i knoe, i thought that was strange also. i mean did he call her to arrive a bit eariler or something. i dunno. i find that weird.

Hi, Heather - Chloe addressed this on her Yahoo boards, and this is what she had to say:

FYI, since I've seen this posted in a few reviews, the general idea was a visit
from Lacey was generally pre-planned, but he moved up the date a bit when he
panicked about feeling all gushy toward Merit. Thus, he fudges a bit with the
"six months" explanation to Merit.

message 119: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (llogan24) | 28 comments Actually, I think he moved it up immediately after he broke up with her to try and get his mind off of his poor decision making.

Lori {Romancing the Dark Side} (romancingthedarkside) | 30 comments Just proves men will never understand women..LOL even after 400 years!!!

message 122: by Heather (new)

Heather | 16 comments Well that makes me mad at Ethan then. He did basically throw Lacey in Merit's face!!!!

message 123: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (llogan24) | 28 comments But you gotta remember...nothing indicates that Ethan was aware of the fact that Merit knew he and Lacey used to be an item. So, he sped up her visit I think to provide a distraction for his feelings and poor decisions, not b/c Lacey was his ex and wanted to rub that in front of Merit's face.

message 124: by Lora (new)

Lora Savchova (lorasavchova) | 27 comments Wait, I believe he didn't speed up the visit. Remember, he explained that the visit was scheduled six months ago.

His expression softened. “Merit, Lacey is here for an evaluation. We’ve been—in my limited free time—reviewing the financial status of her House. This trip
was scheduled six months ago. I didn’t invite her here for a relationship.”

I was really pissed when she showed up but at that scene...*signs*

Yes but there are older vampires in the house and Ethan had to assume that they would talk. He is not an idiot- well usually.

I agree that Ethan had to know Merit knew about Lacey. I think that Ethan was "flustered" by his feelings for Merit and probably wasn't making the best decisions. He definitely isn't used to dealing with human feelings and emotions after 400 years which is why I am trying to cut him some slack! You kind of have to expect him to be a little conflicted because it is all kind of new to him!

I loved the scene in Ethan's office after the party, and I also loved with Merit bested him in the fight! I seriously love when they look at each other and their eyes silver!

So where do you think the character Morgan is going to go at this point. He was hardly in this book. Do you guys think he will be in future books more or do you think he will kind of take a back seat to other new characters like Jonah?

message 127: by new_user (new)

new_user I love when their eyes silver too, and boy, no one gives a compliment like Ethan Sullivan!

I actually wonder if he's going to get pulled more into Celina's schemes. Not a full bad guy, but maybe doing some questionable things because of his loyalty to her.

Anika (teddybear1) | 21 comments I am currently reading the book for the second time since I brought it earlier this week. I think they get better and better but I thougt too that there would have been more teasing between Merit and Ethan and or at least a few more steamy scences. Merit so far has only been attracted to Ethan and only dated Morgan. I would have like to have seen their relationship get deeper before it broke up and I'm now hoping that since Nick and her had a thing before maybe they might have another go. The book did not say much about Jonah but that too is a possiblity. I can't wait to read book 4 and debating if I should re-read books 1 & 2 but I am currently reading the L.A. Banks Vampire Series.

message 139: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 14 comments Finished this yesterday and LOVED IT!!!!! I read earlier in the thread a few people mention Merit may have shifter blood in her.. I was thinking the same thing the first time she met Gabriel and he eyed her and called her "kitten".
I think something big is going to happen with Jeff maybe he is Apex or something?? I def think Merit will end up Master of her own house! Maybe her and Jeff will start the first mixed group of vamps and shifters or something?? LOL
Loved that Ethan and Merit finally did the deed haha but was very Pd off afterwards but it all adds to the suspense and hopefully they get their act together in the next book!!!!!

But i was a little saddened when she toyed with his emotions and revealed that she overheard his conversation with Lacey! But i got over that very quickly.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

As for a future trainer, my ideas using the info that CLV provided....

- Can it be someone from the GP? Darius perhaps?
So that the GP can keep an eye on both the House and its Sentinel?

- Merit has trained with a sorcerer and a vamp, can the next trainer be a shifter? Gabriel already has a lot on his hands, but with the shifters staying in Chicago, possible?

- A member of the RG? Jonah? This one is totally random. I doubt Ethan would want an RG lurking the house when they're already closely watched by the GP.

----
It was mentioned that Lacey was shipped back to her house during the attack, does that me we wont get a showdown between Merit & Lacey? OR will Lacey be making a comeback?

Chloe said that we're gonna get alot of Jonah in the next book so it could be him ;) As for Lacey, she doesn't strike me as someone 2 give up easily, so hopefully her and Merit will have it out soon :D

Caramelle | 21 comments Hana wrote: "Chloe said that we're gonna get alot of Jonah in the next book so it could be him ;) As for Lacey, she doesn't strike me as someone 2 give up easily, so hopefully her and Merit will have it out soon :D"

Right! So...will Jonah be another conflict?
- Will he have an interest in Merit? - Since we know there's no Shifter/Vampire relationship, but will there be yet another vampire interested in her (but she wont have an interest in him)?
- Will he try make Merit reconsider the RG? Chloe has mentioned that the storyline be more difficult, so other than the GP, the RG will definitely put a strain on the relationship between Master and Sentinel (not just a Merit & Ethan thing)
- If we see more of Jonah, would it be safe to conclude that there will be more interaction between the other two houses rather than just Navarre?

As for Lacey, I hope she'll be back. I want to see her defeated by Merit. Let it be physically or emotionally. But the way I want her defeated is when Ethan shuts her down completely and comes to the conclusion that Merit is and the only one for him.

-----

I just realized that is turning more of a 'What do you know about book 4' conversation. Sorry!!!

-----

Regarding the RG, we know that Noah and Jonah are members, but who are the other five that was with Noah during the attack? Other rogue vamps? Will we be seeing more of them too?

Okay this is going to sound bad but in real life no one has ever broken my heart...leave it up to Ethan to do this! I think I took this too personal! But I did love that last statement from Ethan "Sentinel, I am immortal"
Merit is no door mat so I'm sure she won't let him off the hook so easily.

message 149: by Steph (new)

Steph (lovessf) I know I'm a real late starter on this series but I've just finished this book and am desperate to talk about it.
This book was my favourite out of the three. I was so happy when they got together. He was truly a different person with her. I was a little annoyed at how short the romance was afterwaiting for it for so long!Their sex scene was actually quite beautiful if that makes sense. A little milder than what I'm used to. (Cat, and the ever gorgeous Bones fans will know) After the big fight at the end and she went to his office and asked if there was anything else? I was screaming at the book... 'tell her you love her, your sorry and you made a massive mistake' ANYTHING! When they were sparring the second time after he had broken up with her I was desperate, (and really thought it was going to happen) for him to kiss her in front of all the vampires watching! If he had, all might have been forgiven.
what do you think?

message 150: by Faye (new)

Faye (fayegerarldine) | 35 comments hmm, i think it won't be that easy because merit is wary of committing at the first place because she tends to compare her relationships with her father and i think that ethan hurt merit a lot when she thought that he invited lacey over his house after they broke up and she felt that she was dumped by ethan just because he was scared of the repercussions that their relationship might bring to them.
