rivka Sorry, but please don't link to illegal sites. I'm not a fan of DRM, but software to strip it out is illegal. I have removed your post.

Andy (theon3leftbehind) Technically not illegal if you've bought the book, nor is it illegal in certain residences. Most ebooks on the web are stripped of DRM and shared, but ok.

rivka Within the US, it is illegal. Regardless of whether you own the book. Check the caselaw on the subject.

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 2 comments Rivka is absolutely correct, Andy.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is put on ebooks (and on other copyrighted products) because the copyright owners explicitly do not consent to have the works reproduced and distributed by anyone other than the publisher.

If you remove DRM, you are breaking the law (the Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

You really should read the copyright notices which are in the front matter of ebooks. You also should be aware that if you are caught reproducing (copying) or distributing ("sharing") ebooks you could in theory face a fine of up to $150,000 for each book that you upload or download.

There are plenty of ebooks that you can read without paying. Gritty and witty author Joe Konrath is giving away an anthology of short stories from his blog at the moment.

Also, if you enjoy free reads, you might consider becoming a serious (paid) reviewer for a reputable site.
