I can't remember the name of this book that I read just last year. It was set during WW2 in France. A young girl's fiance was sent off to war and was caught trying to defect and come home. He and five others were sent to the front lines where some were killed and some disappeared. He was wounded and had amnesia but she finally tracks him down. Please help - it has been driving me crazy!

could be A Very Long Engagement by Sebastien Japrisot. I only saw the movie based on it, but the story seems to match your description.
