Leah | 6 comments Ok, just to be clear on the discussion matters. Should one have read the books during the periods and then be ready to discuss during the period of the next book? I don't know how clearly stated that question is. It seems like it is very difficult to try to "catch up" on the discussion, even though we are only a few days into the schedule.

Hi Leah. As I understand it (and since West Coast moderators won't be awake for several hours yet)...

Discussion of a section opens on the first date. Until that date spoilers are not allowed--though in the case of PL there is some slack on this.

Discussion remains open past the "closing" date, so that people who are reading slower, or joining late can participate too.

That's correct. As soon as a book's thread is posted, discussion is open on all of that book. You can choose either to read the book prior to the start of the discussion, or to read it during that week but avoid spoilers by not reading the posts until you've done the reading, or read it but read and post before you've finished the book, realizing that you will be subject to spoilers on that book.

Does that make sense?

Each subsequent week is open for all the book through that week's chapter. So in the fourth week, for example, while we will be emphasizing the events and ideas in Book four, you can also be discussing anything from Books 1-3 that also carry into Book 4.

And, as Zeke notes, the threads remain open forever, so you can comment on anything that's gone before any time you want to. If you are a bit slow in the reading and only get to the Book 1 thread after the Book 2 thread is up, you can still post about Book 1 in its thread, and you're likely to get a continuing discussion. But as time goes on, it's less likely that people will want to spend much energy discussion the much earlier books, so it's best to keep as much up with the schedule as possible for the best discussion.

Dianna | 393 comments I'm caught up! :) I like reading what people post before I read the chapters because it helps me to have sort of an idea of what I am trying to comprehend. Even though I don't agree with everyone it is really interesting to read what their comments are.
