Rachel Stefano (CandyPanda) | 17 comments The Synthesis (Powerless, #1) by Jason Letts I took a chance on one of these unknown books, and it is absolutely blowing me away! Mira Ipswich is the most endearing character, and the plot is beautifully constructed and a complete twist on so many things in the young-adult genre. Everything is woven together, and it's impossible to put the book down. It kind of has that Hunger Games pace and intensity to it. Kind of makes me feel like I need to go out for a jog...which is shocking for me!

Anyway, I can't recommend this book enough. Show a new author some love. It's one of those things once you read it'll feel like it belongs to you. Cheap too!

Check out the first chapter on the website:

Becca | 1608 comments I added it to my tbr pile :)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) How do we get it? After reading a bit, I ended up liking the first chapter and want to see where it goes.

message 4: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) Looks like he has some ebook download links on the site. I checked Amazon and found it for the Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003...
Though it appears to be slightly cheaper to buy the mobi version straight from the site, for Kindle folks.

Rachel Stefano (CandyPanda) | 17 comments Cool, yeah, I am glad you all are starting to feel the way I do about it! It does look to be just an ebook thing. I read the full pdf version from the site, which was actually really impressive with the way they did the cover and designed it all. I just found it on Smashwords too: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Lovely me, I think I did something wrong. I'll email them :)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Nope. I think the Nook has a part that has touch screen, but it had terrible reviews. Sony has one that has touch screen. I don't know about the reviews for that. I'd say people are generally happy with the Sony's. Kindle will always be my first love though.

S.S. (ssrice) | 75 comments I love the look and feel of the iPad. When you switch pages, it looks like a book.

Thanks for the Powerless recommendation!

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Hey Jason, it's a small world! I was the one having download issues. Hahaha.

message 10: by Jason (new)

Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments OH MY GOD! Can you imagine the shock of opening a thread like this and finding out it's your own book? Wow! I can't believe somebody found it already! And I'm so glad people are finding it appealing.I've actually been a part of this group for a while now, Rachel. Thanks so much for your approval and for everyone who thought it worth taking a look at! I wish I'd gotten here sooner and then I could've done more of the leg work for you.

I've heard the iPad is just the most addictive piece of machinery ever invented. I like the kindle too though, and they are both good in different ways, though I wonder how different reading would really be between the two devices.

I hope you all enjoy the book! Definitely let me know how it goes for you, and if there's anything you can do to help spread the word, I'd be in your debt. Still shocked and very happy! :D

Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments Peep wrote: "Hey Jason, it's a small world! I was the one having download issues. Hahaha."

Really? I probably should've put that together! It was really just a little thing. No mistake about it. Thanks for your interest and I hope you have fun with it!

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) I really cannot stand reading a book on a backlit screen for very long. To me, e-ink readers are the way to go if you like to sit and read as much as probably most of the people around this site do.

But back on topic, I'll have to check out the book. Congrats on it being received so well thus far!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I had no idea this book was written by "our" Jason! I'm adding it to my TBR list. Gotta support our own! Congrats, Jason!

Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments Jenny wrote: "But back on topic, I'll have to check out the book. Congrats on it being received so well thus far!"

Thanks, Jenny! We are just getting started, but so far it's really been taking off. The success of these sorts of things depends on whether or not people that first wave of readers are able to really get behind it. I hope I've written the kind of deep, compelling story that inspires that. You'll have to let me know!

Shannen wrote: "I had no idea this book was written by "our" Jason! I'm adding it to my TBR list. Gotta support our own! Congrats, Jason!"

Thank you, Shannen. I absolutely am yours. This group is where I spend 95% of my time on goodreads and where I get the best recommendations and conversations. I appreciate your support, and I hope the book's quality pays you back in spades!

message 15: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I was wondering when you would show up Jason. I am adding it too :)

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments WooHoo... yea Jason! Congrats to you! It's going on my TBR pile as well!

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Stefano (CandyPanda) | 17 comments Are you serious??? What an incredible coincidence! I can't believe you're the one in this group. I love that. I think you're really on to something with this story and I've no problem getting behind it.

I already sent the recommendation out to everyone on my list. Everybody else here should do the same! Come on!

message 18: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Rachel, that is funny because I thought you knew Jason personally or something and that is why you read it already!

message 19: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Stefano (CandyPanda) | 17 comments I heard about the book on kindleboards.com, which is another good place to find books. Somebody posted about it there, and the description convinced me pretty easily.

message 20: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Is it bad that the mommy in me wants to tell Jason to print this thread as a keepsake? At the very least, save it off-line.

Becca | 1608 comments You should Jason. I'm stoked for you.

This is a glorious idea, and I will absolutely be doing this. Thanks! And thank you to Jaimie, Lani, Becca, Bluemoon, Brittany, Heidi, and Shannon for the "home team" support! Honestly, I just find writing to be so stimulating and invigorating, and so I'll count it as a complete success if I'm able to share that enjoyment with a few others.

We just started a contest to give away copies, and I'd be happy to save any one of you a few bucks. All you have to do is come up with the most creative and cleverest super power and post it on my blog here: http://tinyurl.com/2f9yhrt .

Thank you again!

Garrett Alley | 2 comments I love the way Jason has created some believable characters and such a fascinating setting in this book. But you know what's better? Jason's a really nice guy, too! I'm so glad to see his effort paying off!

message 26: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Benefiel (staceyhowland) Jason,
Added your book to my TBR and tagged you on Amazon and "yes-ed" your reviews. Hopefully that will help you move up faster and more people will give your book a try.

Good catch, the period got caught in the link.

Right now it is an ebook, and there are several places you can find it.

www.powerlessbooks.com --my website, pdf, epub, mobi

Just curious, not trying to be an ass or anything, but will it go out in print?"

Emily (Super Reader Girl Reviews) wrote: "I want to know too! I think i'd really enjoy this book, but i don't have an e-reader either! Am considering downloading/printing, but probably not the best idea. :)"

Bluemoon and Emily, any questions are compeltely fine. No need to worry about offending me in any way. I understand the roadblock ebooks can be. My understanding is that it requires about 5 proofs to ok a print version. So even if I started today it would be months before it would become available. And you can be sure I will not allow a single mistake to appear in the text. So while I want to say that will happen, making that decision is a long way off for me.

That said, I have an old roommate who is a master of graphic design and typography. The pdf version from the website is as much a work of his art as it is mine. It will give you the most pleasant e-reading experience possible.

Thanks for your questions! If there`s anything else people want to know about the publishing process or anything I`ll give you the fullest and most honest answer I can.

Oh, so you read it already and liked it? What else can you tell us about what you think of it? I'm really enjoying the family dynamics that are developing. So often you find books with kids that seem to have no life outside of school or whatever.

message 31: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Emily, you can read it on your computer, it doesn't have to be printed, and you don't need an e-reader. Before I got my Kindle, I read a ton of ebooks on my computer.

message 32: by Becca (new)

Bluemoon wrote: "same here...^_^"

Thanks so much for the words of support, and believe me I'd love to get it there. But I think I need to see some signs of life first--evidence that this book is getting out there and people are finding it appealing. This thread is a great start, but this has to be just the beginning.

This biggest dictator of how far I'm able to go is if people like you are able to get behind the story and recommend it to your friends. That's when this story becomes our story.

Hi Rachel! Thanks for asking.

Yep, devoured it. On a technical level, I really like how he pulls the camera back and the world expands outward from just a house/yard. Also Jason uses some really interesting phrases/sayings, things that aren't cliche'.

But on a story level the setting and characters feel right. I like how not all powers are "powerful" -- some are nearly useless and some are whimsical or funny (the healer's power, for example).

Jenny (narcisse) Love all the new shiny on the website!

You should link your Goodreads author page to your blog on your website so it'll update your Goodreads fans/friends/followers on new posts. I was going to librarian edit it for you, but since you're a member yourself it won't let me. :)

Thanks, Jenny. Yeah, I've been meaning to figure out how to do that, and I just figured it out. I'm new to blogging, but there's a lot I want to talk about--opinions on what makes good fantasy and young adult books, interesting stories I have, stuff about writing.

Hahaha, fighting kids is just the accompaniment I'd imagined for my book.

I'm pretty confident she's using the kindle for iPod app. You can get it from the Apple app store. Have I got that right, Kourtni?
