Hello there! My name is Samantha and I'm absolutely addicted to reading. Just joined this site...just seeing what's up. I'm enjoying it so far. See you around =]
I have a question though...
I was looking at the 1000000 page count posts and I was wondering...are you counting every book you've ever read? I know it's "lifetime" in the title of the group but it seems that people are counting from the beginning of the year...?

What a neat idea for a challenge...I'm in!
My name is Beth and I live in Minnesota. I studied sociology and anthropology in college but have worked in finance for almost 9 years now. My teenage self wouldn't have believed something like that would happen in a million years because I always sucked at math and thought it was boring. Life is funny sometimes, that's for sure! :)
Anyway, I definitely read to stay sane and in order to keep all the numbers from eating my creativity. Glad to meet you all you fellow readaholics!

I am Virginia, and I live in South Carolina. I am an educator currently working as a literacy coach in a middle school. I have a great husband and a super 15 year-old son--neither of whom are the crazy readers I am.
I love to read lots of things, but among my favorites are kiddie lit, YA/teen lit, romance, chick lit, contemporary fiction, professional development books, self-improvement, inspirational, and historical fiction.
I usually have 2 or 3 books going at once-- especially now that I have my "nook"! I'm excited to to join this group!

Virginia, I also live in South Carolina and I also love reading children's books! Glad to have another member who loves children's books!!

That's because most people don't ever encounter math very well as a teenager.

Mathematics is one of the most creative disciplines ever developed by mankind. So, if anything, numbers and math would only enhance creativity. It is, after all, an art form.

haha, that's because you're in the Finance track. I used to do that (I actually majored in Finance and Accounting), but I quit that career after 4 years so I could study math and physics in great depth. In Finance you can use some very advanced and creative mathematics to build prediction models, but if you're just doing mostly accounting level stuff... then that's not as interesting.

My name is Tiffany, live in New Hampshire, and have a wee bit of a book obsession. I try to read a few books a week, even though I have two crazy kids who are always on the go and distract me LOL.
Looking forward to working on this goal with all of you!

I actually investigate suspicions of money laundering and stock market manipulation so it is usually interesting (small favors) but not very creative. :)

I like the idea of starting with 2010 because like a lot of us here I didn't start tallying the books I read each year until the beginning of this year when I started the 50 books in a year challenge. I am also am doing the 50 states challenge which I am allowing myself two years to finish. Well off to tally my page totals for this year, should be exciting to see the number

That's probably a lot more interesting than what I was doing. If my clients accounting reported something they didn't think looked right, then I had to research and find a way to fix it. Probably not too different, but it wasn't as interesting as auditing for stock market manipulations.
I think the only super creative world of Math in application to Finance (at least that I've heard of) is in the field of Quantitative Analysis. I actually managed to find text books using Quantum Mechanics to do risk pricing. That kind of blew my mind. So the creativity is out there... just not usually at the accounting level : P. Then again, Accounting is probably one of the OLDEST forms of applied math. The Sumerians developed it somewhere between 3,000 B.C.E. and 2,000 B.C.E. (if I remember correctly.) It's also one of the main reasons humanity started to consider very large numbers, as in beyond counting with your hands : P.

I'm excited about moving forward on my 1,000,000 pgs!! Whoohoo

Yay, Carla!! =)

I am Julie and I live in Kansas with my husband and 4 children. I am a social studies teacher at the local high school and I love to read. My husband constantly complains about the number of books I have so I guess it's kind of an obsession.
Can't wait to start recording my books.
A great BIG welcome to everyone from me.
I'm sorry I have been crazy busy. Lucky for me Z is crazy awesome!

Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome! I think it will take you less than 50 years...the trick is to try and read a little every day, (even though that can be really hard sometimes,) and you'll finish books faster than you think!
