RandomAnthony | 14536 comments The only Kmart near us closed and just sort of sat there as a dead store for a couple years until they knocked it down and put up retirement condos.

Sally, in the news today, just for you!

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010...

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mike Duke said he expects international expansion to accelerate as the world’s largest retailer attempts to make up for slowing growth in the U.S.

“My expectation is to add customers, to add stores and to grow Wal-Mart International at an even faster pace,” Duke, 60, told employees today at a meeting in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He didn’t provide growth targets.

Sales in countries such as China, Mexico and Canada outpaced U.S. results last quarter as Americans focused on cleaning up their personal finances, Duke has said. Wal-Mart operated more than 4,000 stores in 14 foreign countries through April, with sales outside the U.S. topping more than $100 billion in the latest fiscal year.

Yay! I feel better now. :)

I imagine Bun has a kitchen full of well loved gadgets. Plus one neglected unloved white lonely toaster, wondering what it did to deserve the scorn.

Phil | 11837 comments Yeah, k-mart sucks. definitely sucks. Yeah. Uh-oh, ten minutes to Wapner.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

Awwwww. I haven't seen that commercial before. I'm planning a lamp rescue mission.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

lololol. Mad as a hatter. Planning a rescue from that evil cheap ikea replacement programme. Right after I raid your house for the neglected toaster. I will take them to the RSPCA

Phil | 11837 comments Do any of the rest of you have polygamists wandering the aisles of Wal-Mart and Costco? In this area, plig-watching is a spectator sport.

We enjoyed that sport as well when we lived there. Costco was the best place to see them in large groups buying large amounts of stuff.

What's their strategy? Do they split up? Do different wives have different areas assigned to them? Are they competitive?

message 61: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) The men and boys look like normal people. The woman and girls are freakish ultra-long hair and long prairie-style dresses. Oh and the women always have a passle of young-ens with them.

message 62: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I was in Lancaster PA on Monday and got caught by a sudden downpour. We ran into the Gap to get out of the rain and found ourselves surrounded by Amish or Mennonite women. I'm guessing Mennonite, but they were wearing the full garb. I was curious what they'd buy at the Gap, and when they'd be able to wear it.

message 63: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Maybe they were buying gifts?

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments But Mennonites do use machinery, as I understand it? They drive cars.

message 65: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments The pic below shows the clothing we see on the women. In Costco, they're usually sporting a cell phone & a pager, too.

The men always wear long pants and long sleeved shirts, to cover their garments (bottom pic, though I believe the polygamist men wear the older 1-piece garments with full-length legs & sleeves).

message 66: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Phil, my great-grandma used to wear those long 1-piece garmies which she would take off one section at a time to bathe, but never the entire garmet. Okay, come to think of it, that means she'd have to wash the garmie while wearing it as well, which doesn't make much sense. But, that's the well-worn Marmon legend from my family, and it was always told like she was some kind of saint or something.

I just gave myself the willies.... :|

I've heard of people doing that. It's odd how much of a stranglehold religion can put on people. In this case, it's not only what underwear to use, but a demand to always have it against your skin.

I know a good many women who wear their garments underneath a bra. That just sounds (and looks) wrong.

Phil | 11837 comments BunWat wrote: "Hairshirts."

message 69: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Well, I grew up with seeing that bra over the garments look, so when I actually delved into the world of Victoria's Secret I was amazed (and delighted!).

Um, I didn't get the Hairshirts reference.

message 70: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Aaahh, gotcha. I've heard of that... but it just didn't come up in the brain matter when you said it. Kind of like the spiked arm-bands & such that I've heard some ascetics supposedly wore. Thanks Bun.

smetchie | 4034 comments Actually, Gretchen is currently in NC on the outer banks and there is not a Wal-Mart in this town. There is a K-Mart about 10 miles away but I haven't noticed a Wal-Mart at all. Additionally, not one Starbucks. There is an Outback, a few 7-11s and 2 or 3 Dairy Queens. The grocery stores are standard but otherwise everything seems to be local business. It's pretty refreshing since where I really live is practically all chains. Back home, my closest Wal-Mart is the exact same distance as my closest Target (5-10 miles?). I choose Target every time.

message 73: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) I'm from Upstate NY, via Illinois, West Virginia, Upstate NY (almost into Southern Tier), Illinois (almost Missouri), Upstate NY, Illinois, finally landing in Upstate NY. (Different towns/areas every time).

I am now live in NC via Upstate NY, NC, Utah, Kansas, Northern NY (could kiss a Canadian so close), finally (never leaving) in NC.

In case you couldn't figure it out, I'm a child of the military and I'm now married to the military.

Where I live now there is a new Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away and an older Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away, and another older Wal-Mart about 20 minutes away.

You didn't ask but Target is about 30 minutes away in another town than me and all 3 Wal-Marts. I prefer Target except they are definitely pricier. ***Note: I've compared, Wal-mart has better book prices.***

Phil | 11837 comments At least two of you currently in NC. It's gaining in popularity?

Anyone near Hickory? My sister lives around there.

I can only speak for myself (I have no idea who the other North Carolinian is), but unless you consider 3 hours close, then I'd have to say no.

message 77: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Three hours? NC is larger than I thought. That's almost as big as the states out here in the west.

message 78: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) NC's only big from east to west. From north to south it's skinny and you can cover the whole thing in 3-4 hours at the widest point.

Félix (habitseven) And lovely people.

message 81: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I live in Orlando.

Plenty of Wal-Marts, none of which are terribly convenient to me; and I don't like Wal-Mart, I prefer Target because the store is more pleasant. I will pay the extra 12 cents for a box of cereal in order to be able to move through the aisles.

Phil | 11837 comments Spent the weekend in Merrilville/Crown Point, Indiana. We were attending a graduation party for a nephew who will be heading off to college in the fall (Indiana State). My wife is very proud that she was able to drink another of her sisters under the table. Two down, two to go.

Amazingly, I didn't see a Wal-Mart, but we did pick up some thongs (flip-flops) at Target.
