Christopher (ctate) My wife can't remember the name of this Harlequin Presents, probably from the '90s, and was wondering if you could help her. The heroine had a difficult childhood, but marries a kind, wealthy older man, although they don't have a sexual relationship. When he dies, she inherits his money. The hero wants her to sell her shares in a company to him, but she refuses, and he's very angry and continues to press her. He comes to her house when her dog is having puppies, and helps her, and the relationship starts to improve. I'm not sure where it goes from here, but it's possible that later in the book, he forces her to sign a contract describing the terms of their marriage, but it's possible that that's from a different book. Thanks!

Hi Christopher. I believe the book you are looking for is All That Glitters by Linda Howard. It is not an HP but is exactly as you describe it. It was published in 1982 has the marriage to the older man, the bit about the shares and the scene with the dog having puppies. There is a scene with the discussion of the prenuptial agreement.

A reader has a request that they DM'd me:

it is a harlequin presents, came out at least 15-17 years ago.
the h is a nurse. i think her brother marries this woman, and she has a pre-teen or young teen son-probably 12-13. she likes to backpack, hike, and hangsarround with her brothers stepson. -as a friend. the boy falls in love with her, and buys her a gold bracelet or anklet....
the boy says he is going to wait for her,and when he grows up he is going to marry her.
the h goes on to be a nurse, and the H owns his own construction company. he has a house on the beach. he gets hurt onthe job,, and she comes to take care of him.
he is still in love with her, and tries to woo her...
anyclues?
thanks-tammy

Se Mcgregor | 550 comments Can anyone recommend a harlequin "back from the dead" shelf?

I'm looking for a book, presents or desire - guess it could be suspense - around 2000. Hero vanished before his wife could tell him she was pregnant. Book begins with heroine kissing the H's BFF and realizing that it's time to move on - baby is 9-10 months old, I think. BFF leaves, knock on front door hero returns, heroine faints. He has been in witness protection / deep cover and they have to go on the run, because the only person who knew about the undercover operation has been killed. Something to do with South American drug cartel.

message 4964: by Poorvi (new)

Poorvi | 302 comments Hi all, asking for a friend.

She's looking for a sheikh book where the hero is the regent of a kingdom. His older brother was either the King or crown prince and disappeared into the dessert somehow. Everyone's mostly certain he's dead but no body has been found so he can't be declared dead until a specific amount of time has passed. Once that happens, hero will be crowned ruler, but until then he's the acting regent.

The hero needs to get married soon, for tradition or stability or something else, but it HAS to be soon and it HAS to be to the heroine. Not sure if this is because it's a pre-arranged marriage, a diplomatic necessity or because she is pregnant with the hero's child, but it's got to be her. The heroine is not too keen.

The hero convinces her to come to his country, the marriage is announced, and he takes her on a holiday of sorts around the kingdom and convinces her a marriage between them could work. She falls in love with him, agrees to the marriage.

When they return from this pre-honeymoon, shortly before the wedding, they find the older brother has returned. It is implied that the brother had possibly had a failed or unrequited love affair during the time he was missing, and he's bitter about it. (Possibly the author was setting up for a sequel with the brother's story, but we don't know if it was written/published)

Now that the brother is back, the hero no longer needs to be the regent and there is no compulsion for the him to marry the heroine, and she over hears him telling the brother that he is glad this is so. So she either leaves or is about to leave or something, until the hero convinces her that while he did say he was glad, she took it out of context, and he wants to marry her, etc, HEA

The H raped the h, he was angry for some reason. Then he forced her to marry him, he said there was no way she haven't gotten pregnant (because he SO strong, haha) before they even find it out. Also the h lied about her age so that he wouldn't feel she is too young for him.

Hi Se, Hi Pranathi,

Sadly nope that's not it. The plot points are common but mixed up between the two books. The hero was not lost in the dessert, just the older brother. The hero and heroine aren't married (at least not an MOC), the brother arrives before the marriage happens, and it is implied if not outright stated that he came back to prevent his younger brother from being forced into a marriage he might not want.

But thanks for trying. :)

Was the older brother lost in a helicopter crash? I recall one where he reappeared near the end of the book and yes there was a follow up book. I'll have to look.

When she went to H she did not tell him about the baby until the OM. Upon knowing he immediately flew out to get his Son and ruthlessly claim the h will no longer marry OM. Thankss everyone!

Scandal: His Majesty's Love-Child This book is the story of the sheikh missing in the desert after he crashes his helicopter. Series of four books called Dark-Hearted Desert Men

Only other guess is The Royal House of Karedes" series. Story of the missing prince carries through the series. Maybe you can get some more details from your friend?

Poorvi | 302 comments Se wrote: "Only other guess is The Royal House of Karedes" series. Story of the missing prince carries through the series. Maybe you can get some more details from your friend?"

No, she went through the synopses for all of them. None seem to match.

The description in my first post was the extent of what she can remember. The confirmed plot points are:
1. Missing, presumed reigning/potential heir older brother
2. Hero prince appointed Regent (they used that specific word), expected to be crowned once brother is declared dead
3. Hero HAS to marry heroine
4. Brother returns BEFORE marriage ceremony takes place
5. Heroine is a little concerned about what will happen about the wedding, now that it isn't strictly necessary and goes to talk to the hero ("Gasp! HP MCs actually attempting to communicate clearly" - My friend's actual words)
6. Heroine hears the brothers talking and hears the hero say he's glad he doesn't have to marry the heroine. There's no ambiguity to his words, it's not like he vaguely says one thing and she processes it through her own filter. He says he's glad he doesn't have to marry the heroine.
7. She leaves, he chases her down
8. Hero explains that she heard right, he said those words and meant them, but she heard it out of context, (His explanation for it makes sense, not the 'misunderstanding' cop out)

I don't know what else I can add. But if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to relay them, perhaps they might jog her memory.

European royals or sheikdom ? In your original post you said Sheikh book. Not sure Regent and sheikh would go together. Some parts of this ring a bell - travelling around part - I'll keep looking. Someone else may have suggestions.

Poorvi | 302 comments Se wrote: "European royals or sheikdom ? In your original post you said Sheikh book. Not sure Regent and sheikh would go together.?"

Oh yeah that was quite odd, but yes, 'Regent'. She says it could be a contextual thing, that he was appointed as 'a' regent (As in simply someone temporarily given the authority and duties of a ruler until a ruler can be formally crowned), not that he held the title of 'The' Regent. But the book definitely uses that specific word.

Also definitely a Sheikh book. The brother was 'Lost in the dessert'

She's not too clear how long ago the older brother vanished, but she remembers that it won't be very long before the hero is crowned, around a year or so.

"I'll keep looking. Someone else may have suggestions."

We would be very grateful :)

The Sheikh's Secret Baby Brother away a while but there is a rule about declaring a Regent for 7 years, H will be declared Regent, brother returns near the end of the book. same scene with h not understanding conversation between the brothers so she goes back to England. H finds her. No book for the brother yet. I thought it would be older that 12 months

book I've read in the past. What I remember is the H was a rancher or a cowboy( I'm pretty sure). He cheated on the h and a baby resulted. He may have married the OW but she left him with the baby. The H goes to see the h at her house and wants her to look after the baby. The h does not want to do it. I'm pretty sure that this is the opening scene. I'm pretty sure the child was a baby and not school age. Hope someone can remember the name of this book.

ReadingIsFundimental | 4 comments So happy to find this thread!

I'm looking for a Harlequin Presents I read years ago. I think it was published in the 80s or early 90s??

The heroine is an English actress playing the role of a frumpy character in a TV mystery program. She meets the hero on set when he visits the star of the show. They become friendly but he doesn't realize she's very attractive in real life. He doesn't recognize her when they meet again months later.

There's some drama with a sister or cousin/roommate that is jealous and competitive with the heroine as well.

Thanks so much!

message 4991: by Eyinade (new)

Eyinade | 8 comments Hey,
Please I’m looking for a book.
I remember the heroine a journalist(I think) who started writing books after she had a son. The Hero has a company that is going to turn the heroines book into a novel.
Anyway the Hero and the heroine dated but the Hero only wanted a casual relationship with her. The Hero met the heroine’s cousin when they went on a date as the same restaurant the cousin and her parents were having her birthday dinner and the Hero asked to join them. The Hero eventually married the heroines cousin because she had homemaking tendencies and not independent like the heroine.
The heroine found out she was pregnant after the Hero and her cousin got married so she went to her Grandmother’s(I think) house to hide.
The grandmother died and left the house to the heroine and that were she and her son were living when the Hero came to see her for the script he wanted to write.
The heroines son also had chicken pox.
