Hi! They are characters in the Moira J. Moore's Source and Shield series. An excellent fantasy/romance series. LOVE them.

It is a MUST READ! The author blew my mind with the beauty of the words, her phrasing, etc....I'm reading one of the stories to my high schoolers to prep them for Romeo and Juliet! That's HOW GOOD this book is:

It's fantasy/romance.

I want to give my opinions on a few topics in the thread, even if some are reaaaaaally old. :)
Every. Single. Thing. That Jaquelyn Frank writes is awesome! AND the different series tie together as time progresses so you are getting one big super-series in one.
-New character in each, but with older ones still showing up.
-Great plots that are hinged on both the politics of the realms she creates and danger.
-Fun romance with REALLY well written sex scenes.
-Really unique cultures with great variations on 'paranormal powers'.
I love her!
(I say this next with the greatest respect for anyone who still likes her books...)
Laurell K Hamilton was once my hero. I think I sold more of her books by word of mouth than her publisher did with advertising. I loved her writing. Then she kept writing. Mistake.
If you haven't started Anita Blake...DON'T. If you have...STOP. Until 2010 I had bought every word she had published, and finally, even I had to 'just say no'. Don't start the series thinking you will just stop after the first 7 or 8, it will most likely dissappoint. It's like saying, "I know the last 1/3 of the book is bad, but I'll just read the first part and stop." Wasteful and leaves you feeling unfulfilled.
The sex (which after like book 9 is the main plot point in and of itslef) is really nothing to write home about. It doesn't feature as strongly in the first 6-ish books though so I am guessing that is why they are better. To make it clearer, reading the sex in these books is much like having an affair with a man that only has two variations in his sexual repotoire; weekday utility position sex, and weekend 'one step up' sex. Variety is the spice of life, which makes these really bland.
Her Merry Gentry books are much better, (even the sex...go figure), and I really enjoy those. She isn't as far into the series, so I hope I'm not in for another Anita Balke debacle.
Someone mentioned the Weather Wardens by Rachel Caine (I think she called them the Weather Guardians though). They are really a treat. Anyone who likes the Fever series (because they like Mac) will most likely enjoy these. The heroine here is more kick butt than Mac though so you don't have to suffer through Mac's 'southern idealism'. She is spunky and fashion savvy and makes me laugh. Lots of fun...and the series is complete as of 2010 so no delayed gratification! ;)
Regina mentioned Jim Butcher's Dresden files and she deserves a star! These might be my favorite series every. This is if you pull out the Laura Ingalls sereies(age 9), the Anne of Green Gables series(age 10), and the Little Women series (age 12). hehe Jim Butcher is the best! The only disappointment is that there really isn't much romance. This of course makes the few moments of it all the better even though they are tame. Anyone who likes The Hollows by Kim Harrison must read these. They are their own genre...Comedic Urban Fantasy. :)
Oh, and Regina, tell your husband to try the Codex Alera for sure. There are six and the series is done now (yeah). The first is not as good but needs to be read. The other five are stellar though. The fourth one, Captain's Fury, is quite possibly my favorite fantasy book of all time. He is just a talented author, hands down. :)
It's a good thing I don't have any really strong opinions about the books I read, eh?

I'm glad to hear that. I read the 1st Codex Alera & really liked it, but didn't love it enough to jump right into #2. I shall move it up my TBR. :)

Yay, Sinful, thanks for that! Can't wait! :D

☞Downside Ghosts by Stacia Kane
☞S.L. Viehl's Stardoc
☞Linnea Sinclair's Dock 5
☞Katherine Allred's Alien Affairs
☞Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assa..."
Thank for the list. I became interested in some of them.

I second that. The Codex Alera series is wonderful. I admit I was worried going into the last book. I didn't see how he was going to resolve matters without a huge deus ex machina, but Butcher is a genius and he pulled it off. Definitely worth reading.

I just read the first one last month and really liked it, so definitely excited to hear it gets even better!

If you liked the first, you'll love the others. The first time I read this series I was taking aspirins like crazy! I kept giving myself headaches from holding my breath. :)

Methods of transportation are a big part of Butcher showing Tavi's resourcefulness in this series. I think maybe he is making up for forcing his other hero (Harry Dresden in the Dresden Files) drive that POS Blue Beetle around. ;)

You know, I'm SO pleased the WW series is over. I loved it, but somewhere around book 4 or 5 I started to wonder if/when/how she was ever going to wrap it up. I've noticed that with her Morganville vamp series too. I do love her writing though.
A series I'd pin my heart to if pins went through hearts without, you know, killing you, would be Lyn Viehl's Darkyn series. I can't recommend it enough, particularly if you like your PNR/UF dry and clever.
I'd also highly recommend Nalini Singh's guild hunter series. Very cool.

Sorry! I mean to say, '@ Daffodil' since she mentioned reading the last one.
I called my son by my brother's name 3 times last week....I'm a nut! :)

Good to hear! I purchased and read on of these years ago, not realizing it was part of a series. I did enjoy the one...on to the rest!

Over time, Tavi's "weakness" has proven to be his greatest strength. Having to find ways to compensate all his life has gifted him with ingenuity, determination and puzzle solving skills that really come in handy when he's making do with what is on hand and engineering some fantastic transportation solutions.

I love the 'buddy system' with the canes for using the furycrafted causeways in FLF.

The series is written is written 3rd person POV and rotates between 4 main characters. There are a few 'cameos' by others, but it stays 3rd POV.
The POV is one of the things that I love most about this series. you get a very in depth look at many characters. The pro- and an-tagonist are two of the four, while the other two individuals represent the 'past' and 'current' elements of the land's culture and government (while both also being tied to the two others as friends or family). Truly well done. I never found myself feeling shorted in regard to any character's development.
These sometimes get shelved as military fiction. To be honest, if I had seen them there, I most likely would never have read them. Instead I picked them up based on enjoying Butcher's other work so much. They do have quite a bit of military action and planning in them that is all based on the Roman legions. Instead of glossing over those parts, I found them becoming some of the most interesting. I even did some research on the Roman military and culture after reading part of the series. I enjoyed it immensely!
I'm sure you would too. :)

I've just read this one recently: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/82.... I absolutely loved it. It has everything good PNR/UF should have and it's even fun. It's only first book in the series and on top of that the author's debut. I've read 5 books since that and even after Pale Demon I'm still thinking about it. Sometimes writers don't write fast enough.

Even my husband was laughing and he doesn't like most of my books, he doesn't know what he's missing... :)

10 AM – I need to take a crap, but I think Abby’s catching onto the fact that I’m using that corner under her bed. I’ll just tell her they’re magic raisins. She might believe me. Maybe if I eat one to prove it.
Wouldn’t be the first time.

5 PM - Dammit. They’re making out all over the table. Seriously? Get a room. Ugh. Now he’s hopping around and groping himself, braying like a pony. Not really. I wish he would, though. Then I could take pictures for blackmail. I’m going to go crap under her bed for sure now.

LOL @ those uni-posts! I'm looking forward to reading the book. More and more as ya'll keep sharing this stuff.
