Just had to post an ode to this "book" -- actually a trilogy -- in here. I have the 2006 version of the list, and didn't know it'd made its way onto a later edition -- and I couldn't be happier.
I was assigned the first volume in this trilogy as part of my reading for a college course -- and it blew me away. Flat-out, hands-down, rewrite-my-mental-map-of-history blew me away. It's a history of the Americas told in a series of vignettes, in a magic realism style. I recommend it to everyone with an interest in history.
