Çağlar (vaevictus) Hello everybody,

I am new to goodreads and this group. I am looking for new books that are worth reading and browsing the reviews in my favourite genres. However there are many different tastes and the most accurate review for me is to chance upon a bookworm with tastes similar to my own. So my question is: How can i find readers/friends that have read my favorite books and have a similar taste so that I can find new books to my liking following their reviews?

Thank you all.

message 2: by Gitte (new)

Gitte (gittetofte) One way is to go to the page of one of your favorite books and then click on a person who has also given the book 5 stars. If you can enter that person's profile, you can click on 'compare books' (somewhere near the top of the page). If you seem to have similar taste and you want to follow this person, you can add him/her as a friend or just follow their reviews.

Good luck :-)

message 3: by Petra (new)

Petra Also, for general browsing of people's shelves, go to "explore", then "people" and, if you want, "the world". This gives you all the Goodreads members who are currently on-line.
Click on each person's name. This will bring you to their profile, where you can "compare books" and/or check out their "Read" shelf. If you click on "ratings" while on their Read shelf, it'll sort it from 1* to 5*, for easy reference/browsing.

Çağlar (vaevictus) thanks for the tips. on them!

message 5: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Yeah, I compare books obsessively. Very useful. And if you horse around in this group long enough, you'll end up meeting a few people who share your taste in books.

You can also visit the Thread of Dire Judgment and make friends with whoever picks on you the least. :)

message 6: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Also, I see World Without Us on your to-read list; that book totally kicks ass. I recommend it.

I second that recommendation. One of my favorite books. Especially if you ignore the last preachy chapter about human procreation...

message 8: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Totally, that chapter sucks.

Kaion (kaionvin) I can honestly say I don't think hanging around here talking to people who will oft run into the problem of having no one push books on you. Sadly, I don't think Goodreads has anything like LibraryThing's 50 most similar libraries, but there's always finding people whose reviews you agree with. Or the the Bookseer.

message 10: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Heh. Bookseer is cute.

Is everyone here on LibraryThing too?

No idea what you are talking about......

message 12: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 293 comments I'm afraid to join another booksite. I'm already on here more than is healthy to my reading habit.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Cagler - from your current To-Read, I can recommend both The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Alienist.

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 511 comments Hello,
I'm not sure where to post this and hate to admit my incompetance with technology, but how do I get my new books on my shelf? I've tried the Finding my Books tab,and after some clicks,am told that GoodReads doesn't have that book. So then I go to manually import books, where of couse they tell me they do have that book, but once I click on that link and try to to add it to the read shelf, it disappears. Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but what? I've read nine books so far this summer and want to register them. I also won a book and want to review it so... Help, please

message 16: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) If you're picky about which edition you're adding, then the easiest way to enter your books is plug in the isbn in the search bar and then you'll see it listed as the first book (if it's in the database). Then you just hold your mouse over the add book button on the right and pick which shelf you want to add it to.

Nihar Suthar (niharsuthar) | 26 comments Hey Caglar,

If you are into motivational books, I recently published one titled Win No Matter What: A Guide to Hyping Up Your Life. It's made up of short, powerful and inspirational stories. Even better yet, I'm donating a portion of all the book sale profits to Acumen, a charity investing in solutions to global poverty.

The ebook version is only $3 if you want to support the cause :)

*Molly Frannces* (primteahatter) PETITION AGAINST EXPLICIT PHOTOS ON GOODREADS

Inappropriate images of skimpily clad women kept popping up in the "Popular Photos" sidebar when I looked at my, or a friend's, photos. I contacted Goodreads several times, flagged a certain image in question several times like they advised, yet it has kept appearing along with other explicit photos. When I sent them the link to 2 images that were not being removed, they told me that according to their regulations, the images in question weren't breaking the rules and wouldn't be acted upon.
I asked them to add a setting blocking the Popular Photos box, and that too was denied. The full conversation of 5 emails may be seen in the Thoughts thread.
So this petition is to repeat that request to include a 'block Popular Photos' setting. If they won't listen to one person, they may listen to a large group of people! No personal information is required except your username

Oguzhan | 2 comments Hi all!

I feel so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of authors available!

If I could get some recommendations on authors that would be great!

I enjoy reading thriller, horror, mystery, fantasy, suspense and young adult, fiction.

Thanks In advance!

Oguzhan... the best place to get recommendations is in our recommendation folder a little further down the page!

I like to watch youtube videos with book reviews

R.S. Merritt I pretty much just read whatever. I've discovered some of the best books in the library sections of Bed and Breakfasts and on cruise ships. At one point I'd read everything you could buy in those airport gift shops as well! If I don't like the first few pages I typically set it aside unless I've had someone recommend it.

message 25: by Scott (new)

Scott I find that I am rarely at a loss as to what to read next. My to-read stack got so high on my nightstand that I had to dedicate a whole shelf to it. I also find that, since I read a lot of nonfiction, I'm inspired to read a book by the book I just finished. I also have two teenage children, so I read a lot of what they are reading. This is partly because I want to know what they are reading, and partly because some of it is just good.

As far as going off your usual beaten path, I second looking for other people who have liked the books you liked to see what other books they have reviewed positively. However, there is a caveat: it may take several tries to find reviewers you genuinely trust.

A more joyful way of finding new books is to go to your local bookstore, if you have one (Scranton PA does not!), to simply peruse the shelves. Pick up a book that looks promising, open it up and start to read it!

message 26: by Mickey (new)

Mickey (liongoddess) | 470 comments I go to my library's website and scroll through the new book listings. Things that look promising get reserved. It's also a little more helpful than scanning the new book shelves as not all branches have every new title, but they'll ship the reserve requests to any branch.

Sorry for the spamming distruption you guys. I have flagged RS and blocked her/him from the group.

Always loved books since I was a little kid and have been happy to see that gene passed down to children and even my oldest grandson. I used to read a lot more when I didn't have the opportunity to write full time as I do now, and one of the reasons I recently joined Goodreads and this group and one other (so far) was to have a reminder/motivator to read more.

I've been reading more lately, before hitting the sack, and though not the best time for me (mind gets fuzzy after an hour or so when it's that late) I know I need to read more because I'm a more complete, well-rounded "me" when I do (plus I love that quiet time).

As far as finding books, my favorite is big spread-out book sales (under big outdoor tents in the summer my favorites), but some supermarkets and libraries have a table with decent books discounted or on clearance and I always (always) spend a few minutes checking out the titles and rarely do I come home without one. Of course, you can get great used hardcovers through Amazon in "like new" condition for $3 plus shipping, and sometimes even less.

Just a quick follow-up regarding the original post of this thread (going back to 2010), and this may seem self-explanatory nowadays, the question of how to "find books to my liking." I think we've all become more research savvy over the last seven years, with Google and Amazon in particular making it really easy to track down books, authors, and categories of books that we enjoy and checking reader reviews, recommendations, "Similar To" listings, asking questions on forums (such as this) or trying the old fashioned way of going to the library and having a little discussion with your neighborhood librarian.
