Rajat Acharya You are not alone... I hated the overall draggy storyline of this book as well. I prefer a more realistic science fiction rather than this one....

I found it ponderously political, stressing the import of political correctness within their society and the penalty for not playing along. Weird ending.

message 103: by Megan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Megan Brooker There wasn't enough background on how Jonas's society ended up the way it was or why they want to control their people. The ending was predictable and flat too. Still much better than Gathering Blue, the sort of sequel.

message 104: by Aisha (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aisha I haven't read the sequel but my teacher told us that the other books were another community and that all the characters will meet. She also made us do a project in how the community began

message 105: by Shae (new) - rated it 2 stars

Shae I read this book during late grade school, and I loved reading, so I thought I would like the book. Why would teachers assign books if they weren't good?
It turned out that I disliked it. I just didn't see the point of all of it, I could see a message behind it, but I had to force myself to finish reading it.
Oh well, I guess we all have different tastes in books.

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

I so did not like the ending of this book. The ending of a book very often either saves or kills the story. In my case, not just the story but anything else that author publishes. The editor should go back for retraining!

message 107: by BJ (new) - rated it 5 stars

BJ Yeah, this book was really dumb.

message 108: by Cara (last edited Jan 26, 2013 03:20PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cara I didn't really understand it. The whole thing with seeing colors and stuff like that was just confusing. I think it was a great book for a certain type of reader, but that's not me. The ending sucked. And I don't understand why there is 3 other books (not that I've read them). The whole thing is weird.

message 109: by BJ (new) - rated it 5 stars

BJ No kidding!

message 110: by Dana (new) - rated it 2 stars

Dana I really did not like this book at all. I also didn"t like the cabin either so I guess I am out of the main streasm of reading.

I agree with you, I also believe that it was meant to be disturbing. It's to teach you a lesson, it's so you remember it.

Redd Kaiman It took a while to get there, not gonna lie.

message 114: by Laura (new) - rated it 5 stars

Laura this book was probably the first dystopian book that I read. I still really enjoy this book. I own the whole series, thanks to my sisiter.

BJ Laura wrote: "this book was probably the first dystopian book that I read. I still really enjoy this book. I own the whole series, thanks to my sisiter."

Well, being me, I don't call things dystopia . . . I call it screwtopia. It just seems funnier. Don't you think?

message 116: by Renae (new) - rated it 3 stars

Renae Richardson The book painted a pretty straightforward contrast of our world and what most people think they want in a utopian society. When obviously the horrors pretty much outweigh that of a dystopian society.

I didn't believe it was really disturbing it was just weird imagining that any society like this could exist and be believable. That would be to assume that humans are dunces.

On any account I was very disappointed in the ending. It was like the author just ran out of ideas and didn't know how to resolve it. Many will counter its a good use of literary technique to invoke imagination. I didn't get that from the ending. It was an abrupt ending that to me was senseless and really reflected poorly on the entire book.

message 117: by Riley (new) - rated it 4 stars

Riley Ruchti I really loved this when I read it last year, but it was also my first dystopian novel. Having read more now, I think if I read it again I probably would be bored.

The first time I read it I didn't like it at all. Then I discovered it was part of a trilogy...after reading all 3 (now 4) I love it

I did not like it either. My nephew read it for school so my husband bought it. It was not my cup of tea.

man

Chantel I think it is kind of boring

message 123: by MiMi (new)

MiMi I had to read it for school whether I liked it or. Not but I really liked it ..... No I won't read the rest of this series but I highly recommend the book seriously people

message 125: by Nisha (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nisha Pillai I read this book on the basis of a recommendation/list. I found it odd and disturbing indeed. It was one of those books that I just wanted to get over with. I don't like abandoning a book midway, especially if its a highly ranked one. That was the only reason i persisted till the last page. After finishing the book, when I found myself not cherishing the experience at all, the conclusion I drew was that may be the book was intellectually hard for me to keep up to. Its a little comforting to know that i am not alone in my feelings for the book. But still, i want to have a re-read some time later. Who knows?, may be advancing age will help shed a new light on the same.

Jillian hated it!!

I didn't really get the hope message when I finished it, but looking back, I suppose getting to know all things isn't so bad. But then again, most people are rationally ignorant anyway, so maybe it doesn't really matter.

message 128: by Elena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elena I read this book last year for school and it's a really good book and you're not the only one to like it. It didn't like how it left off on a cliff hanger, but if you read all the other books in the series it might give you a clue to whether or not Jonas lived or died.

That is funny! I could not wait for it to end, so I ended it early. LOL I could not finish it, I tried for a while and gave up. Unusual for me BTW,

message 130: by Nesha (last edited Mar 02, 2013 03:26PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nesha I loved this book so your not the only one. IT was weird and odd at first but if you kept reading it, it would explian everything.

Steffaney Smith Meh wrote: "Wow, you must not read very much science fiction. The Giver is pretty tame stuff, even old hIat. The situation is a classic that has been used ever since science fiction has been around. I didn'..."

I first read The Giver 15 years ago; I re-read it this winter so I could read the next 3 books in the series.
Having read so much YA dystopian themed books since my first reading, I found the book holds up very well with the newer books -- and I realize Lois Lowry was a genius for writing such a book when she did!

Bluestar I read this whole book last summer, and it was good, so I got "Gathering Blue", and "The Messanger." It was a really good trilogy, though the first book didn't connect with the other two.
Anyway, in school, we read an excerpt for "The Giver," and lets just say it ended with a bunch of students laughing their heads off. I didn't remember it being THAT disturbing... though it was still good.

message 133: by Sherri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sherri My book club read this years ago. This is one book I will never forget. Lots of interesting ways of looking at the human story. I am a creative person who could never imagine myself living like that. I rebelled instantly, so when we had our discussion and a couple of ladies thought it sounded like it would be a nice way to live (easier) it was shocking to me. Just shows you how different we all are. This book makes for deep thought and discussion.

message 134: by Redd (new) - rated it 3 stars

Redd Kaiman I think it was a little slow in the beginning. I sort of compare it to an old school Twilight Zone episode.

I read this in 3rd grade and I was fine, even having a very protective mother and father.

message 136: by MJ (new) - rated it 3 stars

MJ We had to read it as a class novel in year 9, so even though I thought it was alright, having to constantly re-read and deconstruct and re read this book has made me sick of it.

message 137: by Lauren (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lauren When I read the book in school, I had a lot of trouble with it. I didn't like it at all and I found it difficult to wrap my head around what was happening in the story. I am willing to give it a second chance with fresh eyes soon though!

message 138: by Addee (new) - rated it 1 star

Addee My opinion of Lowry is that he is extremely disturbed. The undertones of the adult/child relationship in The Giver is not on any level a healthy one. It's beyond wrong.

message 139: by Aly (new) - rated it 1 star

Aly Closser i thought this book was kind of weird i don't know why but i didn't like it either so don't feel bad

message 140: by Emily (last edited Mar 23, 2013 02:44PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emily This novel is actually pretty incredible. I was 10 the first time I read it and I was just completely blown away. In fact, I think this book is the only reason that I've displayed any interest in sci-fi at all.

Ammended: The book is incredibly odd in any case - so you're not off-kilter with that remark. I enjoyed it but it isn't for everyone.

That's just makes it worse if the author is female. She should be ashamed of herself. JUST MY OPINION.

Kristen I didn't really like the book. I think it was an interesting idea and it was entertaining enough, I guess, but the whole thing was too unrealistic for me. There was too much that I couldn't rationalize as ever becoming normal in any society. And in a story that is supposedly not fantasy, alot of it just didn't make sense.

The Hunger Games is a great book/ series!!! I loved it!

message 145: by [deleted user] (new)

I read this book when I was 9, and I remember it being very disturbing and confusing.....

Crystal I LOVED THE GIVER! it was different and weird but made you appreciate the little things in life like the ability to see color and enjoy weather change.

message 147: by Artemis (new) - added it

Artemis I read this book last year, and I have to say, that was a once-in-a-lifetime read. As in, you only read it once in your life and that's enough. Also, did anyone else notice that Lois Lowry (the book's author) gave the book's cover a black background? Should have seen that coming. That should have been a totally obvious foreshadowing.

Patricia Kaniasty My 16 year old son recommended to me. He loved it and new I would too. He thought I had already read it cause it was right up my alley. I have been enlightened. LOL. Loved it. Gonna read the sequel next.

Crystal i loved the book!!!

Crystal its not really confusing
