message 153: by Pansy (new)

Pansy | 740 comments I guess I am part of the majority when I say Twilight was my first. I absolutely devoured every book in a week. I hurt my ankle skiing and I sat in the lodge drinking hot wine and reading the Twilight series. I then stumbled onto Argeneau series and I realized that there was adult PNR. I never looked back.

message 154: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyfraser65) | 81 comments I was completely against the PNR genre. Thought they were "ridiculous" and wondered who in their right mind would read them (DON'T SHOOT!!!!) I had just finished my stint at the library of buying adult fiction and couldn't believe the amount of PNR which was starting to flood through the publishers... I reluctantly purchased a 'token' amount... just enough to test our customers to see if they would go out. Well, they rocketed off the shelves and I couldn't buy them fast enough. Still, I was a doubting Thomas.

Then I became the CYA librarian and started to hear about this "Twilight phenomenon". Didn't want a bar of it. Not only was it PNR but it was written in the FIRST PERSON which I hated. Then I started having parents asking me about it, asking about whether their child/teen should be reading it... so I bit the bullet and thought I would "skim read" the first one. HA! More fool me. I was completely hooked...

So, for me, although Twilight has received untold criticisms for all sorts of reasons, this book got me on the PNR ride and then the urban fantasy and then the fantasy romance... oh, you get the picture. It also completely changed me regarding first person books although I still much prefer to read in the third-person (I just LOVE hearing the thoughts/feelings of the hero).

So I am very thankful to the Twilight saga for all of the above, but what I am most grateful for it is my 20 year old daughter who would NOT pick up a book, went with her mates to see the first Twilight movie, overheard some girls saying it wasn't as good as the book and went out and BOUGHT the first 2! Unheard of her money always goes to partying, clothes and makeup. She then promptly rang me and insisted I get her the other 2. She now reads books! Not a prolific reader by any means, but she does read. So she along with many many others has now become a reader because of the Twilight phenomenon.

Needless to say, I am a complete convert and now struggle to juggle (?!) all the sub-genres of romance I love.

Jessica | 72 comments My very first was The Awakening from The Vampire Diaries. I found it in my high school library waaay back when and I've been hooked on my other worldly world ever since!

Lol, I noticed the time you posted. Glad to see I'm not the only night owl. Getting pretty sleepy now though, I just finished Drink of Meand my college homework. Was an all nighter. Wanted a quick read before turning in though and found Drink of Me...

message 162: by Tania (new)

Tania Christine Feehan's Dark Prince - was completely against vampire books before then, the ones that I had tried were predictable and forgetable. This had heart and soul and the story of a community struggling to survive. In some ways their needing to drink blood was incidental.

message 163: by Juana "Darkness" (new)

Juana "Darkness" Duran My first time with this group has be welcomeing. Thanks guys.

message 164: by Sheri (new)

Sheri The book that hooked me on PNR was Ward's Dark Lover. I actually had the book given to me, and it sat on my shelf for almost a year before I finally gave in and read it...and then I had to wonder what in the world had taken me so long!!

message 165: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Field (jdfield) | 11 comments Twilight, it was like a whole new world, lalala

message 166: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I just saw this discussion and found it so interesting. I too kept far away from any "vampire" novel. My daughter's were reading "Twilight" and I read it just to see what it was like. I have to say I wasn't crazy about it, but what I recognized was that it was just a good old fashioned romance book that happened to be about vampires. Then I could understand my daughter's (I have 3) obsession. I became a little more open to the concept. Then I read Christine Feehan (can't even remember which one) and I became hooked. I now read all kinds of paranormal and love it. But I still don't like the Twilight series.

message 167: by Kouk (last edited Nov 16, 2011 05:04AM) (new)

Kouk | 58 comments My first Paranormal Romance book was Dead until dark by Charlaine Harris in 2008.

I saw trailers of True Blood and read that there was a book series about it, so i picked it up!

This book was only the beginning and many more books followed!

message 168: by C.C. (new)

C.C. | 219 comments My first movie was interview with the vampire but I don't really remember much of it. Then, Twilight Movie, I was intrigued by the story of an immortal hot vampire. Then, I tried to read... :))so I asked my sister to get me a vampire novel. She gave me Vampire Academy series... Then I just fell in love with vampires and PNR books with good fight scenes. After the VA series I worked my way up to adult PNR and Urban Fantasy... BDB, Night Huntress etc..

I love Vampires too!
Vampire academy is a terrifc YA series.
Night huntress & BDB are favorites of mine as well!

Glad to hear it :D You know what I like about goodreads? I find people who likes the same stuff that I do, like vampires.. My friends say I read too much vampire novels and that its ridiculous... Well, I tell them to f*ck off coz my goodreads buddies think otherwise :))

I totally agree with you Crystal!
Goodreads is such a nice way to meet readers with the same taste in books!

I keep hearing: ''Don't you ever get tired of Vampires''?
I always awnser: never!

message 172: by Abbey (new)

Abbey (crabbycat07) Unfortunately, I am one of those who got their PNR start with the Twilight books; and have since discovered, after reading other series, that the Twilight series is actually pretty bad. However, I do owe a debt of gratitude to Stephenie Meyer; for it is thanks to Twilight that I have happily devoured books with vampires who make Edward look like nothing but a really pale, and sparkly, wuss. Edward, Bones would eat you alive!

Jennifer☠Pher☠ (naylorjen) | 32 comments I wish I could remember the first PR that I read. I have had a love for all things spooky since I was a very young girl, I think I was born this way :o) My taste in books has always lead me to the Paranormal and I just can't remember the first with a taste of romance ;o) It's actually bugging me now.

message 174: by P.A. (new)

P.A. Lupton (palupton) | 909 comments I can still remember the first PNR I read it was a YA story and I was 12. It was called Teenage Witch (no not Sabrina), I read every witch book I could get my hands on until I was a teenager and discovered vampires Interview With the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles, #1) by Anne Rice sucked me right in and I never looked back. I have noticed though that since Twilight it is much easier to find PNR and UF books. I used to feel like I was the only one who loved those books. LOL Not anymore.

message 175: by Karen K. (new)

Karen K. Miller (karenkm) | 2 comments The first books I remember reading that were PR were Anne Rice's vampire books. But I feel like my obsession with paranormal goes back further than that. Now I read anything I can get my hands on (like many other people that follow this site!).

message 176: by michelle+8 (last edited Nov 16, 2011 07:14PM) (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Wow, I had completely forgotten about Interview With the Vampire! The movie came out when I was about 13, and between then and college I read just about everything Anne Rice had ever written.

But then I got busy with kids and then homeschooling, and hardly read anything just for fun until a friend gave me the first Sookie Stackhouse book in 2006. Now I read PNR/UF all the time!

message 177: by Sheri (new)

Sheri After reading some of these posts I need to update mine...Dark Lover is the first paranormal romance book that I read, and that got me hooked on PR...However, I have been reading Stephen King since high school. He is by far my all time favorite author. I guess I have always thought of him more as horror, but he would definitely fall under the paranormal genre, too.

message 178: by Emily (new)

Emily Goodwin (goodreadscomemilykg) Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV back in 1996/1997? It was a long time ago. I was pretty young at the time, so I 'grew up' with the show. I can't remember the first paranormal book I read, though since I've been old enough to read, that has been my genre of choice. Anyone else remember the Goosebumps books? Def not romantic, but I think it was the first 'paranormal' series I read.

message 179: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Goosebumps and R.L. Stine...loved them!

message 180: by TJ (new)

TJ (soxchic) | 55 comments Twilight got me started on the Vampires & world of the Sups. HOWEVER... it was JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood that really got me hooked

message 181: by Carri (new)

Carri (carrifedor) HaHa... Goosebumps and the Fear Street Saga! I quess I have always been this way!

message 182: by Lisa264544 (new)

Lisa264544 | 46 comments Hunger Like No Other was the first PNR I ever read. I read the entire IAD then moved on to the Black Dagger Brotherhood and DarkHunters. It is a great genre.

I've seen the first three Twilight movies (I don't like them) but haven't read the books because I don't like YA books.

message 183: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Nov 17, 2011 11:17AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments My sister has been into paranormal books since way back in the day. As you said, PA, she had trouble finding them. Now it's funny how numerous they are. She's the one that got me into them, and I thank her all the time for that.

message 184: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) My first vampire book was Dracula which I read as a teen.
The book that got me hooked on Vampires was Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon and then I moved on to Lara Adrian's Midnight Breeds.

message 185: by [deleted user] (new)

My first paranormal romance experience was watching the old soap opera "Dark Shadows." Anybody remember that one? It came on after school when I was a kid. Years later I watched INterview with the Vampire. Since I was already devouring romance novels (started at 11)I decided to try Night Play by Sherilynn Kenyon one afternoon. I've been hooked every since.

Carri wrote: "HaHa... Goosebumps and the Fear Street Saga! I quess I have always been this way!"

I read those when I was younger and I've reread alot of them recently. They're still a good read even though I'm older.

message 187: by Jussy (new)

Jussy (j-s-e) My first experience was The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Before accidentally finding the series I was reading the Patricia Cornwell books.

Quite an eye opener :D

message 188: by Dan (new)

Dan (honord) | 17 comments Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust got me started on vampires and weres. Then, as I was searching for more stories I discovered Anita Blake Vampire Hunter. So I'd say it was really LKH that turned my on to PNR/UF.

I have to say though Anita has changed a lot... I preferred her earlier books when she was a badass necromancer instead of now where she's a weak slave to sex. But this isn't the thread to discuss her so carry on!

I have to say that starting out with Anita though has kind of turned me off of Y/A PNR it's just too tame and vanilla. I definitely prefer something more steamy now! Although there are a couple of Y/A's I read that were good like Vampire Academy and Chicagoland Vampires.

message 189: by Delia (new)

Delia (deedreams) | 15 comments Mine was the Twilight series I believe? Although it might have been another book from what I recall...

message 190: by Alice (new)

Alice (thegoodqueen) | 131 comments Anne Rice, Interview with a Vampire..I went right into The Vampire LeStat, then Queen of the Damned..I've been addicted ever since. I have to say tho, that I probably would not have picked up the first book if not for having loved television's Dark Shadows

message 191: by Ashley (last edited Nov 28, 2011 11:26AM) (new)

Ashley (ashleycw) I read a few PNR books before these, but the ones that really got me wanting to read more were the Morganville books by Rachel Caine. I loved the vamps are the bad guys aspect.

Sarah (zih0021) | 10 comments Ashley wrote: "I read a few PNR books before these, but the ones that really got me wanting to read more were the Morganville books by Rachel Caine. I loved the vamps are the bad guys aspect."

Yeah same here I loved the Morganville series. After that I read The Vampire Voss and The Vampire Dimitri and I must say I'm now totally hooked on to PR.

message 193: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Twilight was my first too. Then it was Sookie, Nicole Peeler's Jane True series, Chicagoland Vampire, Mercy Thompson. I am now reading the Dark Brotherhood series or BDB is how you all abbreviate it right? I still think I am a novice in this genre. Reading PNR definitely opened me up to read other fantasy books I would not have tried otherwise. Some were great like Patrick Rothfuss and Octavia Butler. I am trying to figure out what to read next.

message 194: by PNR lover (new)

PNR lover | 430 comments My was Twilight, then Dark Prince (Carpathians, #1) by Christine Feehan

and Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #15) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

message 195: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarealist) | 55 comments My first time was when I was 13. My mother had a huge hardcover copy of the first 3 Anita Blake books in her room and I took them. haha, I loved them but felt so bad (I was a goody goody kid) especially with the sex scenes I was embarrassed!
It took me a month to read and then I told her I read them....she was pissed but took me to get my fix on some more age appropriate paranormal :)

message 196: by Nola (new)

Nola Lightman (nola_lightman) | 7 comments My first time with paranormal romance was with J.R. Ward's Dark Lover. She's absolutely my favorite romance author. I've been hooked on the genre ever since.
