Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments "Literary drug". That's a good one. Right now mine is anything by Juliet Marillier. My son asked me yesterday on Facebook if I realized there is another world or if I am living in fantasy.

Brandee | 103 comments Yeah I dont know about VP..IF the books are like the show I know I wont be able to get into them...but I guess i can give it a try right ??wish me luck

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Brandee, the books are a lot different than the show. I enjoyed them and love the show but everyone views things differently. The show has definitely done far different things with the story. The only characters that are the same are Stefan, Damon, and Matt.

message 105: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (elainereads) | 21 comments OK, first of all, I am so dating myself, but I think the original Dark Shadows was my introduction to paranormal romance. Of course, I chose to watch it so there may have been something before that.

The first books I remember in the genre are Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Saint Germain series.

I love the Sookie series - hate True Blood.

I have read several of the Anne Rice books, but gave up on her years ago.

I read everything by Laurell K. Hamilton. I can't say if I prefer her Merry or Anita books.

I could go on and on, but I promise I won't. LOL

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Me too on Dark Shadows!

Lauren⁷ 💜 (lrc123) | 115 comments Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) wrote: "Me too on Dark Shadows!"

I've never heard of Dark Shadows. Who writes it?

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Chuckle. It was a television sort of soap opera in the sixties. With a vampire, a creepy house.... it was way ahead of it's time. You can get the DVD's on NetFlix. At the time it was my favorite show - a must watch in the afternoons. As Elaine says, definitely dating us. There is talk of a movie starring Johnny Depp but to my knowledge nothing has been done on it yet. He would be a great Barnabas.

Um, I am not sure. It was a paperback paranormal romance that was in my company's book swap bookcase.

It was about a vampire who had amnesia (couldn't remember what he was) and this very modern woman who took him home and helped him.

It was different and soon I was looking more.

Crystal (crys25) | 72 comments I read that book as well. It was cute.

message 112: by Destiny (new)

Destiny (destiny84) The first paranormal romance book I read was Unleash The Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 184 comments My first PNR books were The Twilight Saga. However years ago I watched Buffy and Angel on TV as well as movies like Teen Wolf so the paranormal bug had already been planted. Twilight awakened it and I went on to watch True Blood, then read the Sookie Stackhouse books. Now I have a hard time getting into books that AREN'T PNR. I feel like there is something missing lol!

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 184 comments Roberta wrote: "I think my first time was Twilight the movie than I wanted to know more so I read the saga to find out what happen to Edward and Bell, than I started watching HBO show True Blood when that was over..."

If you liked Twilight you should try
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. It was recommended to me by someone on Goodreads. I am so sorry I have forgotten who. It was probably my favorite or one of the top ones I have read this year. I loved it. I can't wait to get Linger (the sequel) on my Kindle. :)

message 115: by Mariel (new)

Mariel (fuchsiagroan) Sookie and then Kresley Cole's IAD series for me. :) I guess I started much earlier than that (in the '90s) if you count ya books like the Diana Wynne Jones books. Or Labyrinth film when I was 6. I always had the paranormal romance taste, I think.

message 116: by Erin (new)

Erin (erin-b) The Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie is the first vampire thing I remember seeing. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time, but I've loved vampire things ever since. Interview with the Vampire was probably the first vampire book I read, or at least the first one I remember. The Meredith Gentry series, which a friend recommended a few years ago, was what started me reading in the PNR direction and I haven't stopped yet.

message 117: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneyk) | 17 comments My introduction was Dracula the movie about the Brahm Stroker book. I can still remember my favorite part which was the werewolf and the redhead ordeal.

message 118: by Shae (new)

Shae | 5 comments Anne Rice was my first! I'm pretty sure The Vampire Lestat was the first one I read. When Anne Rice quit writing vampire stories it was a very sad day for me. That was 2003 and then in 2007 I found Colleen Gleason. She gave me the Gardella Vampire Chronicles! So I went from idolizing vampires to being in love with vampire hunters.

Danielle Ruffin (poetic_mother) | 42 comments I'm going to add to the common starter...Twilight was my first paranormal romance series. I saw the movie and the book was on sale at Target so I decided to try it. It went hectic from there and I haven't found a PR series since that I do not get engrossed in.

Tessa (tessa27) | 7 comments question for anyone, i am about to start the dark hunter series by sherrilyn k, do i need to start with the first one and go in order? they dont have number one at my book store???

message 121: by Jaime (new)

Jaime Tessa wrote: "question for anyone, i am about to start the dark hunter series by sherrilyn k, do i need to start with the first one and go in order? they dont have number one at my book store???"

With Dark Hunters you really do need to go in order. Characters reappear through out the series and some story lines extend through mutiple books. Fantasy Lover is the first in the series even though the main male character is not a dark hunter. Some people thought this book was a bit cheesy so I suggest if you do not care for it to atleast read the second book before you give up on the series. That is when you start learning about the dark hunters.

message 122: by Jaime (new)

Jaime I have been a fan of the show Supernatural for years when a friend practically forced me to read Twilight. I consider the Twilight series my gateway drug into the world of PNR. I followed it up with the Darkyn Series and the Nightwalkers. That is when I was hooked. I cant seem to get away from the paranormal these days. I have to force myself to put down the shifter books to read my other love, Tudor Historical Fiction and Non Fiction.

message 123: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (krazij) | 6 comments I love paranormal/romance movies but as far as books go, have to admit my first was the Twilight series. I snatched them from my daughter and LOVED them. Then I wanted something more then PG-13 and I ended up on Amazon in the paranormal romance section and O MY! Started w/ Sydney croft (acro series) and Lara Adrian (dark series) and I was hooked! Amazon is my new best friend...........lol

message 125: by Yazmin (new)

Yazmin Cancel (ykc61377) My first experience was at the age of 8, when I watched American Werewolf in London with my cousins. The movie scared the s**t out of me but as I grew older I found myself drawn to horror movies and books. My first paranormal book was during middle school. I can never remember the name of the book but I do remember it was about a young overweight girl who, although from an influential family, was not well-liked. She had an imaginary friend named D'arcy. She also had a half-sister who tries to kill her in order to stay with her parents, money and "friends". Does it sound familiar? I've always wanted to read this book again. My second book was Dolly Dearest. Needless to say, I hate dolls. LOL!

Dee Dee, trust me on this, I was in your shoes 2 yrs ago. Twilight was my first PNR. I saw the movie on DVD, I didn't understand the craziness from my teen daughter. After the movie, I wanted soooo much more of Edward. I borrowed her books and read them 4 times, joined 5 Twilight sites, watched every interviews, etc. I thought there was no way out of this... I found the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward. There was no turning back, now I'm running thru authors after authors AND devouring every word.

Goodluck crossing over from Twilight.

message 135: by ☽ Rhiannon ✭ (new)

☽ Rhiannon ✭ Mistwalker ☾ (pnr_list) | 133 comments This is a tough call. I was into Anne Rice as a teen but didn't think of it as romance so much as vampy gothness. I never read any traditional romance novels, and at this time still don't plan to branch out away from PNR (without the paranormal element, the appeal is lost for some reason). I think the first time I looked down and thought to myself, "Hey, I'm reading a romance novel!" was when I read the Night Huntress series. I'd read Patricia Briggs and Karen Chance before then, but neither of them had struck me that way, for whatever reason.

Of course, now I'm addicted to the stuff.

message 136: by Mindy (new)

Mindy | 5 comments I read an Ann Rice book in high school (1990's)I read all her vampire bokks and my favorite was the Mayfair Witches. I didn't read anything else til about 5yrs ago. A friend gave me Laurell K. Hamelton's Guilty Pleasures the 1st in the Anita Blake series. OMG I was in love! LOL

message 137: by Lux (new)

Lux BB | 1 comments It started when I was in middle school, I got a book from my sister called Demon in my View by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes but the one book I loved was Hawksong from the Shapeshifters series. I have to admit, what got me started again would have to be Twilight. Then I was reading like crazy, most of the bulk of the books on my list I've read was after Twilight.

message 138: by Akaria (new)

Akaria Gale | 101 comments Some time this spring I was looking for smut with vampires. I had fallen out of love with the Sookie series and needed something with a lot more heat. Didn't even know PNR existed as a genre. I'd been mostly horror/sci-fi/UF up until then. I devoured Lover Eternal in like two days and been hooked every since. Ward really is a gateway drug!

message 139: by Patricia (last edited Nov 17, 2010 03:21PM) (new)

Patricia (catnaping) I loved movies like Lost Boys,Fright Night,Monster Squad,Once Bitten,Dracula and Near Dark while growing up and my favorite Tv shows are still Buffy and Angel. My first books with vampires would have to be either Anne Rice Interview with a Vampire or Christopher Pike Last Vampire series back in the early 90's.I really got hooked about 5 years ago when my sister gave me Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark-Hunter series and Karen Marie Moning Highlander series (I know not vampires but still Fantastic) since then I have not stopped reading.

message 140: by Adriana (new)

Karin Elisabeth (goodreadscomkarinelisabeth) | 34 comments My addiction really started a few years ago when I ordered "Dark Lover". I was stuck with BDB until book 5 when it got too fantastic for me (.. a ghost???)
Then I discovered there is a paranormal genre on Amazon. The rest as they say is history.
I love Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews (I know - that's UF but still), Meljean Brooks, ..... The list goes on and on.

Have you read the Dark Swan series and the Georgina Kincaid series (also known as the Succubus series) by Richelle Mead? If you haven't you've GOT to read them. They're great. I will warn you though, book 6 of the Georgina Kincaid series isn't due out till Sept '11 and book 3 of the Dark Swan isn't due out till March '11, book 4 doesn't even have a release date yet.

I like both series, but HATE it not all the books are out yet and I have so long to wait till I can complete the series...it's worth it though. :)
