Teresa (tharr) | 4 comments I just finished it over the weekend. While I couldn't put it down, because I wanted to see where it was all going. I was a bit disappointed with the story line, although it was nice to see some characters develop better. I kind of get the idea that it's more of an in between book. Something to put btwn 9 and 11. Here's hoping #11 is better!

message 2: by Jess (new)

Jess Ditto! I really love this series so much, then I read DITF... I was so let down. I expected so much, I agree with the in-between comment. I have high hopes for the next book, I mean things can only get better from this point.

message 3: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenlopez1283) I havent finished it yet but its like the author is continuing the series for the hell of it. sookie is just randomly moving from place to place runing into different characters to make sure everyone gets some airplay.

message 4: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) Thats the problem with series books. Especially long series books. I like single book Vampire stories like Dracula. With a series as long as Sookie Stackhouse you can really wear it down. Sookie is in a league of its own however. The books are fun to read even if they are not the best one of a series. I think Dead To The World is probably everyones favorite other than the first Sookie or maybe Club Dead. I have not rushed out right away to get the new book. Pretty soon I will get around to it. Yeah Charlaine Harris is making money hand over fist, LOL. :)

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 193 comments I think she used this book to clean up some bits and pieces and introduce where she's going with the remainder of the series. I think it was a weak book for the series, but I think its inclusion will make the next book more solid. Or so I'm hoping

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I think she had to have time to let Sookie recover from the previous book's torture, and then set up stuff for the next one.

message 7: by Pamela / SpazP (new)

Pamela / SpazP I am most definitely a Sookie Stackhouse Fangirl. That being said, I gave this book 3 stars and the only thing that saved it from 2 stars was the last quarter of the book where there seemed to be a flow (finally!) of characters and storyline.

Here is my opinion on Dead In The Family:
This book should have been condensed to a short story in an anthology. Not a stand-alone novel fluffed with unnecessary narration. It was not as unmemorable as the last novel in the series, Dead and Gone, but this was definitely not the novel I'd been hoping & waiting for over the past year. Quality is definitely better than quantity, and this is the third book in a row that demonstrates Ms Harris is just churning out books that have lost the magic. I still have hope the magic will return, but I can't help but be truly disappointed... Again

I agree Pam, this for me is the 3rd in a row I didn't like (actually I'm comflicted on this one, I like it better then the last 2). This book felt really out of character.

I gave this four stars not necessarily because I liked it or because it was well written (geez louise and okiee dookie) but because Harris wrote a book to make her fans happy. It read a little like a fanfic there was so much happiness and predictability. Esp. when Sookie dialogues her thoughts about a posibility of becoming a vampire.
So I gave it four stars because after 10 plus books (side stories included) the Stackhouse cast is like old friends and family. It was a nice visit with them. there was alot of growth, Sookie and Jason finally maturing a bit!
The ending was odd!!!!

STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT A POT. SPOILER!!!

Sookie couldn't forgive Bill for lying to her but it's ok to cuddle with a killer?

Some of my review is included here.

message 9: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (tharr) | 4 comments I have read other series books and they don't end up like this. However, this is probably the longest series I have ever read.

I agree this one would work better as a short story rather then a stand alone novel. At the same time I tend to agree that this had a lot of things that needed to be tied up as the series moves on. Does anyone know how many books are supposed to be in this series? I never did find out....

message 11: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I thought this was so disappointing. It felt largely influenced by feedback she gets from her readers. Every character went against who they used to be which was why I loved them to begin with.

Eric- insecure, crying, unsure?
Sookie- hard killer?
Jason- sensible and practical?!
Pam- hugging sookie?
sam- present! oh NOW he decides to be a friend- if she was really setting him up as something maybe she should have tried harder before the 10th book!
bill- having a "sister" who looks like his wife?

She didn't show us anything she just answered questions through conversation- I was so disappointed with this book. At this point she should have stopped it at all together dead.

Kim This review is exactly how I feel about Boook 10

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Good article.

message 14: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) | 51 comments I liked this book. There were a couple things that I skimmed through. Mostly the were politics because who cares? that part was boring but I think it's a set up for another book. I liked another side of Eric, evn if it was a little frozen with confusion. I am happy that there is someone for Bill. I think the book needed another 100 pages or so to properly tie the story together. It was like a pile of logs that never was built into a house. It could have been more but I did enjoy it. Loved Claude and Jason especially.

When I read this I thought "EXACTLY! I didnt even think that!" But then the more I thought of it, Dermont didnt have a choice. He was spelled to be psyco. Even if he WANTED to he couldnt help himself. which he tried to explain to Sookie. Bill COULD have stopped and told Sookie what was going on even at the threat of death but he CHOSE not to. Im just sayin'.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I still found it creepy that she cuddled with two people she didn't like at the end. One, her cousin whom she's always found a bit odd and definetly wouldn't consider cuddly, and the other she thought was a killer until 15 minutes earlier. Doesn't matter that they're all related...I still found it creepy. And her vampire husband said he didn't mind that other men were in her house (at the time, he was referring to Hunter and Claude) as long as none of them were in her bedchamber. So I don't think he'll be too happy if he finds out about her little cuddle party!

no I understood that, it's just I would still have a hard time cuddling with someone who tried to kill me, maybe my parents, and maybe others. Even if he was under a spell.

message 18: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 193 comments I agree I found the cuddling a bit weird, but then really after the whole mess of the day, perhaps just not feeling alone was a comfort that she appreciated. I think Harris put it in there to allude to more fairy related weirdness in the future.

Thats funny! I think on her FAQ's she has a funny sample of a bad fanfic that makes refrence to Hunter and ghosts in the attic.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I have had a funny feeling that Sookie would find something interesting in the attic - eventually. Claude said he'd help her clean it out as repayment for staying there but it didn't happen this book. Since he hasn't moved out yet, perhaps he'll do it next book. And does this mean great-uncle Dermot moves in too? lol Too many faires for poor Eric. lol

Ananda (elizagirl777) | 2 comments Ok I'm new to this site so bare w/ me please. I a a huge fan of the Stackhouse books. Good or bad, I still love them. I do agree w/ a lot of the comments here about this last book. I wasn't super let down by DITF, but it def left me wanting for something else to happen.

Lauren, I agree with a lot of your views. While I enjoyed it, I was also disappointed and expected more. More of what, I'm not sure exactly but I didn't feel satisfied.

I know I'm the last person to jump on this boat but here it goes...

CH seems to have broken away fro her usual formula: Sookie living life/purse in drawer I can see why the series is going in this direction. Sookie is being given a very human response to the shit-ton of stress she's walked thru. I think that is a very relatable.

Over all I hope DITF is a bridge to dealing with Victor Madden. I think she's handled the fea and the weres. I'd liek to see CH really hit the Vamp Politics hard and heavy in the next book.

Over all I liked DITF.

message 25: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (eledri) This book had me torn. I blew through the book in a day as I did the others simply because I couldn't not know how things ended. I did get an overall enjoyment out of it, but it wasn't as fulfilling for me as the other books had been. I was glad to see Sookie with Eric, and that for once instead of seemingly being "OH YAY OKAY" Sookie had more of a human "whoooooa wait a minute here" response. I agree with Anna Maria that Id like to see the Vamp Politics hit heavy in the next one. And I'd like to see someone putting Victor in a not so comfy sunny situation... ;)

message 26: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (tharr) | 4 comments Putting Victor in any sunny location would be fine with me, he certainly wouldn't be comfortable for long. ;-) LOL.

I had a feeling we would be visiting Sookie's attic soon and there would be something interesting up there.....

message 27: by Adria (new)

Adria | 80 comments Yeah I didn't care for this one much either. Its seems like Dead in the Family and Dead Reckoning are fillers, to set us up for something (hopefully) amazing for the last few books. Because if they keep dragging like this I will be very disasppointed.
