Kirttimukha TheCat | 93 comments Rock on for the Doctor Who names! Lethbridge Stewart is one of my favorite characters. So sad that he hasn't made it into the new series.

I'm not too worried about Twilight names making their way up the list, most of them are very traditional and quite pretty. The most disturbing on that list for me is Kason. Who the heck named their kid that and why?!! That's awful! Maybe I'm missing something. Besides who am I to complain, My name is Susan one of the most boring names in the history of the planet. The only thing I can say for it is that it's not half as popular as Jennifer.

message 52: by Jezi (new)

Jezi (wjrockafellow) My nephew's name is Caeson Joseph (another way of spelling Kason). I thought it was a little wierd at first, but now I really like it and it is unique.

Oh my!

Makes me wonder if any new moms went crazy after the Lord of the Rings craze.

Was there an increase in little boys being named Frodo, Bilbo, Legolas, and Gandalf???

I had a friend named Penny Nickel.
I went to school with a girl name Princess Green.
I once interviewed a woman named Needa Light.

That's Brad Paisley's son. But Huckleberry is actually his middle name. His first name is William, so actually the roll call in school would have him as William.

I used to have a friend who's name really WAS Jane Doe. She hated it.

And I can't really see a lot of Frodo, Bilbo etc.

I feel like there are some hardcore twilight moms who are very tempted in naming their children edward or bella so I don't really like the names anymore."

I have a cousin named Audrey and I work with a woman named Audrey. Both are major bitches of the first degree so the name has a bad connotation for me.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I read a Highlander novel and the lead character's first name was Cullen. I'm trying to remember which book it was but for the life of me, I can't.

message 61: by Mariel (new)

Mariel (fuchsiagroan) I know someone who named their daughters Bella and Alice after Twilight. At least the Edwards can tell people their moms liked Jane Eyre (Meyer's own Edward inspiration). But Cullen? Yikes.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish What shocked me was that a significant number of people are naming their daughters Renesmee.

message 63: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 2659 comments Mod
Still Mariel--Cullen is better than some of the names in my hubby's family.

His Mum, bless her heart, put her foot down, and all 3 of HER children got "ordinary" names. Lawrence, James and John.

But his poor father. . . My father-in-law's name was Waller--no, not Walter, W*A*L*L*E*R. And the middle name isn't much better--its Rawlings. (Altho I will admit--that's also my hubby's middle name.)

Hubby's granddad--GARLICK Rawlings Boggs.

Hubby's Great-granddad--Corrans--yes, with an S. Anyway, you get the picture. Not sure why that side insisted on these hideous names, but, oh well.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 80 comments There is certainly lots of precedent for people naming children after literary figures. Wendy wasn't a name until after Peter Pan.

I know a woman named Dorcas (biblical family name), a boy named Perrin (Robert Jordan's WoT maybe?), a girl named Freja (after the Norse goddess), a couple that has two girls named after the places where they were conceived (Nevada and Pheonix), and the list can go on and on.

I was never a big Twilight fan, but I've seen worse names than Cullen. After all, 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.'

message 65: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish (last edited May 20, 2010 01:38PM) (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I rather like Cullen, myself. It's distinguished sounding, and is similar to Colin.

I named my son Evan, and my mom threw a fit calling it a "damned made up name."

My point... you can't win.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 386 comments It's not really literary, but several years ago I worked for a company that had a company wide phone directory. Of course when times were slow one way to boost moral was to look for comedy names in the phone directory - the best one ever that I came across was another lady with the Surname Beaver, her first name was rather unfortunate:

Iona Beaver

Her parents must have hated her.....

Jesslynn | 164 comments Jacob has been the most pop boy name for the last 10 years or so. Can't really say that Twilight was the catalyst for this name. And a lot of ppl I know are starting to reach for older names bcs they are trying to find an original for their child or a name with more character.
I liked the name Jake and so my son got named Jacob and that was before twilight, too. I really regret it though bcs my sons going to have to deal w/ being in a class w/5 other Jakes.

Steph (angel4492) | 177 comments I don't have any problem at all with people naming their kids after book characters, movie actors, songs, etc. Great places to get inspiration for names you'll love enough to say 1000 times a day as they're growing up. :)

My baby sister named her son Gage, after seeing the cute little kid in the movie "Pet Cemetary". Thankfully he was never allowed to play with a kite near a highway with a lone 18-wheeler driving on it.

Get ready to laugh! I used to work in a doctor's office where we had two patients with OMG RFLMAO names. Of course, all our giggling was done in private, but calling the patients back was a HOOT and made keeping a straight face very hard at times. ***Cross my heart, these are real names!***

Drum roll....

#1 poor sod: Meet Mr. Seymour Weiner, a nice, kindly 80+ year old who probably didn't think there was a thing in the world wrong with his dear ma and pa namin' him after a hot-dog.

#2 poor sod: Meet Mr. Richard Face, a polite 40+ year old middle school teacher ...

.... wait for it ..... yah! You just realized what the common nickname for "Richard" is, didn't cha?! >:)

That reminds me of several bad name & career choires.

When my FIL was in the Air Force, his unit's CO was Major Richard Head. No joke.

An ex-Navy boyfriend had two shipmates with the last name Staynes. Rank? Seaman.

A friend's mother worked in an accounting office with a woman named Penelope Pinscher.

message 82: by Beth (new)

Beth (vanburren) | 22 comments I like all of the names in Twilight, but I don't think I'd name my children after them, just because I know there would be too many with the same name as they grew up.
I grew up with a kid named Sanflea. He moved away when I was still pretty young, but I'll never forget his name!
And I do research on my family history that digs up quite a few odd names. . . one distant cousin's name was William Pinkney White, and they called him Uncle Pink. Even my parents had odd names; my mother's name is Nevada and my father's name was Otis. I just love all kinds of names, and I constantly ask my customers at work where they get their names, first and last, or I'll ask what their middle initial stands for.

OK, not trying to get OT here, and maybe I should PM Beth, but wow... a Pinkney? I can trace one of my family branches back to Miles Pinkney Barefoot, but we have no information beyond him because, according to what we know, he was an orphan left on the steps of the Flowers home in Darlington County, South Carolina. He ultimately married Ida Elizabeth Flowers. Is it possible there's a relation? If you want to chat, friend me.

I think this is a tradition that has been around a long time. I was named after a soap character on As The World Turns, my brother's middle name is Darren which my mom got from Bewitched, and my oldest son is named Nick, though not only because of the character in a vamp TV series in the early 1990's called Nick Knight...but he certainly didn't hurt! :)

My first name was given to me in memory of my Uncle Larry--he was in the Navy--stationed at Pearl Harbour--on Dec. 8, 1941. . . Guess what he died from?

Anyway, Uncle Larry never married or had any kids. He was also the oldest of my grandparents children. To "remember" him by--5 of us cousins in my generation have some version of the name Lawrence/Laura. And none of us use it.

My hubby's grandmother (back to weird names from HIS family) was named Welma. Her Dad was German and she was first generation born in this country. She was also the only one of her parents children born in a hospital. So her GERMAN father filled in her birth certificate with the name Welma Dorethea. Pronounced in German--VELMA Dor-a-te-ah. But because this is the U.S., she was called Welma by everyone else.

I think my complaint with the Twilight names isn't where they got the baby names, we all get names from somewhere, but just that there are sooo many Isabella's and Jasper's and Cullen's now. I love the name Cullen, but more because I like the whole last names as first names. You know, like Mackenzie, or Taylor...etc.
In my husband's family, the male name is Lynn...from great granddad on down...three sons all with the name Lynn.. My daughter is Kaelyn and we hope it ends with her! (our son has no Lynn in his name, I thought it was overkill!)

My daughter is named with 2 family names. Her first name is the female version of my father's name. Her middle name was my mother-in-law's name.

As I've said before--my first name was for my mother's oldest brother (she has 4 brothers) and my middle name was for my father's grandmother. (Altho I have to admit--I DID wonder what the heck they were doing naming me for Great-Granny Annie. She was quite something. EIGHT husbands, 12 children that lived, another 5 that didn't, and she ruled the entire family with an iron fist.)

Name Shmame, in 10-20 years, Twilight fever will be dead and it will just be a name...IMO!
