Oh, the singing that helps everyone - that was a pretty bad book.

You aren't just whistling Dixie on that one! I'm nearly halfway done and considering a lobotomy to make it through the rest. It's like a parody of bad space opera. If anyone is interested in what a good space opera is like, read some Peter F. Hamilton and more specifically Pandora's Star.

Pollyanna (polly8) | 300 comments Atonement, Sunshine and Herland are the only books I have never finished. I used to always finish a book even if I wasn't enjoying it because I felt I had to lol but now if a book isn't grabbing my attention I think of all the books I'm missing out on.

I notice quite a few people gave up on The Time Travellers Wife, I did read the whole book but I can understand why people don't like it, I find it highly overrated.

message 54: by Mel W (new)

Mel W (melw) | 981 comments I haven't read The Time Traveller's Wife but a couple of friends were keen to see the movie so I tagged along. They quite enjoyed it but I thought it rather meh. I wasn't sure if it was the censoring but I kind of felt like "what, hang on a second, I've missed something" throughout most of the movie. The highlight for me ... Eric Bana :)

message 55: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 205 comments I couldn't finish Legend of the White Wolf. I just couldn't get interested in it.

message 56: by Christine (last edited May 13, 2010 10:42AM) (new)

Christine (cdunbar) | 635 comments Oh, I couldn't finish The Time Traveler's Wife. The movie was boring, too.

I just gave up on The Traveler by John Twelve Hawk. I think I wanted it to be a good book since the author has such a cool name, but *sigh* it wasn't.

Macwolf01 [Elise] (macwolf01) | 1012 comments I have to admit to reading the ending of most books, it all stems from reading a wonderful book but the ending ruined the whole thing. So now if I don't like the last page I won't read it.

The book that turned me into an end reader, was re-read up to a point and then I stapled the last chapter so it wouldn't piss me off again. Otherwise I can truly say that I've never purposely defaced a book.

haha I will pick up a book cuz friends say it was good but even friends who read the same genre don't always have the same tastes. I loved Hood by Stephen Lawhead was handing it out to friends & family some loved it some couldn't finish it. We have a deal no hurt feelings if someone doesn't love a book you do. Books are like food & wine ... each to there own.

As for the cover ... haha I must admit to a gag myself but if its a good read you can always cover it. That book was published in 2005, maybe that explains the horror on the front.

Can I steal "craptacular"? ... excellent smooshing of words (fav pasttime of mine)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Macwolf01, sure you can have craptacular. I'm not even sure where I got it from.

message 60: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I think craptacular would definately work when people ask me at 5am/6am when I show up at work, how i'm doing...(I'm soo not a morning person)

Macwolf01 [Elise] (macwolf01) | 1012 comments haha me too ... never been a morning person, it would be perfect for those weeks I work days, its not pretty

message 62: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments yeah...or the people who come in after I've been working all night - we work rotating shifts each week (and I have two weeks of nights coming up)...i don't like morning people either!

message 63: by Steph (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 386 comments I put down Witchling and Bad Blood without finishing.

Macwolf01 [Elise] (macwolf01) | 1012 comments Haha I'm totally with you,I have a week of midnights for the entire May 24 long weekend (sucks). I normally do 2 weeks days, 2 weeks afternoons and a week of midnights. Perky morning people are annoying when us morning haters work especially if I haven't had coffee yet ... then I am exceptionally craptacular.

message 65: by Dee (last edited May 13, 2010 05:12PM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments what's that mcdonald's add...dont' talk to me until i've had my coffee! lol! i normally bring starbucks in and then one of the guys I work with, makes a coffee run around 8am...so he gets me another...and around the end (about noon), I had a mountain dew...i think i'm nearly immune to caffeine now...

I work - a week of nites (10 pm to 6am); a week of swings (2pm to 10pm); a week of days (6am to 2pm) - then a week off, then a week of three half days - plus two weeks (each 12 hour shifts) - one of days and one of nights

but to the original question...I could never finish Cold Mountain but I didn't mind the movie

Nikki ♥ I couldn't finish Dark Prince by Christine Feehan. I didn't care for her writing and I couldn't get into the story.

message 67: by KimKirt (last edited Jun 11, 2010 11:59AM) (new)

KimKirt | 1638 comments Wow, I'm tickled pink to find others who didn't like The Time Traveler's Wife. I did finish it, but did not like it. No desire to see the movie.

The only book I can recall not finishing is Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. I truly, honestly tried to finish it. Even my husband finished it and he doesn't read voraciously like I do. I was told if I made it halfway through the book I'd be home free. Didn't happen. Just over halfway thru I quit. Couldn't take it anymore.

I don't even skip to endings. Ohh, I couldn't do that. I think I'd turn into a pillar of salt.

Oh wait! I thought of another one (hence my edit to this post). The Shack. Oh gosh, I really AM going to turn into a pillar of salt now. Sigh! But I just felt like I was reading the exact same thing in every chapter. So much hype over the book and I didn't even finish it.

message 68: by Christine (new)

Christine (cdunbar) | 635 comments Thought of another one: American Gods by Neil Gaiman

I've read everything else by this man (except for the kid books) and loved them, but I could not get through American Gods.

message 69: by Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (last edited Jun 12, 2010 11:00PM) (new)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Christine, you and my best friend both had trouble with it. I thought it was decent. Didn't love it, but didn't have the adverse reaction either.

Kim, I actually liked Wicked. I hated the other two books of his I tried. But Wicked, I liked.

message 70: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I liked Wicked too Photojim. I only read his other book Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, which was good but really depressing.

message 71: by KimKirt (new)

KimKirt | 1638 comments Yes, my stepson and husband both liked Wicked. Trust me, I don't like leaving books unfinished but I just couldn't get through it. Don't guess I'll be picking up any of his others either.

message 72: by Caleb (new)

Caleb (ccp981) Sunshine by Robin McKinley I put down with 10 pages left to go. I couldn't finish it, I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski Demonic book! I just could not keep reading it here are a few reasons as to why:
*I don't always have a mirror when I read
*It is hard to read a book from multiple points within the book (like the book will refer you from front to back and then a different point all together, so you'll read 100 pages in the front, then 25 in the back, then back to the front again...)
*It's fiction and it feaking has foot notes!
*Could the text be any smaller?

The Host by Stephenie Meyer I don't have a reason for this one. I just couldn't do it. I will try again. I am thinking audio for this! lol!

Come the Night by Angelique Armae The vampire had an unnatural obsession with Jesus. This is too much for even me!

I try not to leave books unfinished. Some I just cannot handle!

message 73: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 822 comments Mostly anything by Jade Lee. I swear Lee is freaking weird! All her books I've read involve these bs plots about ying yang penises full of sperm taking you to the big tea leaf in the sky & attaining fulfillment or some such crap. One book even had the hero get some other chick knocked up & the heroine was like "That's ok, I still love you even though you knocked some other chick up & still want to bone her brains out".

message 74: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments this is the first DNF book i've had in a long time - Lucca - the premise was interesting, doctor falls in love with woman he has treated who has lost her sight in an accident...but it was translated from dutch and i think that was part of the problem, plus it was really slow - 80 pages in - had heard his point of view and just starting a re-telling of her life up to that point...

I agree. I had to force myself to finish The Dragon Earl, it was awful!!

message 76: by Erin (new)

Erin H I only made it to chapter 12 of The Taste of Innocence (Cynster Series) by Stephanie Laurens . I thought the book would get better if I kept on reading but it didn't and I just couldn't finish it :(.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments @LethalLovely and Erin - As for Jade Lee, the only one of her books I've read is The Tao of Sex. It earned a solid one star from me. Blech~!

@Carla - I loved House of Leaves! It just kept drawing me in. The footnotes were like actual notes and you could tell as the narrator was getting closer to coming undone. Then it got spooky.

Okay, gotta ask...what book was so good up to the point that you stapled the last chapter together so it wouldn't piss you off again. Curious to know what book it was (and what chapter you stapled).

message 79: by Chloe (new)

Chloe West (chlxee) | 61 comments H.R.H. by Danielle Steel. I love Danielle Steel but I just could not get into this book.

message 80: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) | 512 comments Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Dracula- I thought I couldn't get into the writing style of the diaries and letters, but it may just have been the subject too. IDK. I recenlty read The Boy Next Door by Meg Cabot and loved it. It was told through emails, which is the 20th century version of letters.

message 81: by Kathy Anne (new)

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) The Hunger Games
Ender
These books made me wonder what kind of adults are on the horizen, that the young have to go thru that kind of stuff to protect them.

message 82: by Pam (new)

Pam | 1048 comments I have been trying to finish Indigo Blue since the beginning of June. Usually I finish things I start and I usually like Catherine Anderson but I have not been able to slog through this.

The Romance Reviews (Carole) (The_Romance_Reviews) | 12 comments Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind. That's also where my interest in the series fell off. Seriously, I can't take so many pages of Richard whittling the wood and taking care of poor Kahlan. I've never hated a heroine so much as Kahlan. I. Just. Dont. Like. Her.

KimKirt | 1638 comments I just gave up on Emma And The Outlaw The heroine was irritating the heck out of me.

message 85: by Ro (new)

Ro (rooc) | 51 comments Lady Sophia's Lover

I usually love Lisa Kleypas, and this one? They were all aggravating me. I went ahead and read the ending (a bad habit, I know) and I still couldn't finish it.

message 86: by Raine (new)

Raine | 177 comments I'm really struggling with The Warlord Wants Forever although it is just a really short book. I have heard from so many people that this is an awesome series, but if the other books are anything like this book, I'm afraid I will have to pass.

message 87: by ~♥*Marianna*♥~ (last edited Aug 31, 2010 03:00PM) (new)

~♥*Marianna*♥~ (marigam) I often have this same problem with books. Ill start reading and its all fine and dandy and then out of nowhere they've lost my interest. Sometimes its the plot or the characters and it leaves me with a very disappointing feeling since I really want to like the book especially if paid for it!
I now have bookshelves called "stalled" for books I'm really hoping I'll get back to reading, "dropped" for books that for various reasons I no longer plan on completing, and "annoying" for books that had some frustrating little tidbit that prevented me from finishing them on the account that I would tear my hair out if I had to look at on more word.

Raine,
I know what you mean about The Warlord Wants Forever. I did finish it.(Probably only because it was so short) However I am now hesitating to get any of the other books because of the issues I had with first. The series is soo well liked that Im left thinking that the others might be better because they're longer.

message 88: by Ro (new)

Ro (rooc) | 51 comments Raine and Marianna - I like Kresley Cole, and I thought Warlord Wants Forever was just so-so. Definitely not a shining example of how good she can be. No Rest for the Wicked is so much better

message 89: by Raine (new)

Raine | 177 comments Lucy, I do have A Hunger Like No Other on my TBR pile, so maybe she deserves a second chance. But for now I'm going to find something else to read.

message 90: by Jasmin (new)

Jasmin (princ3ssjasmin) | 91 comments Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years, #1) by Gregory Maguire
But I'll still definitely pick it again and try reading through XD

Fran | 12286 comments Raine wrote: "Lucy, I do have A Hunger Like No Other on my TBR pile, so maybe she deserves a second chance. But for now I'm going to find something else to read."

Raine- try A Hunger Like No Other! It's really good- when you have time you might want to try Kresley Cole again. There are some really great books in the IAD series.

message 92: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24347 comments There are quite a few books I haven't finished, The Warlord Wants Forever being one of them (I have read other IAD books and loved them, so it was just that one), along with Playing with Fire and Unearthed. I thought I'd give Unearthed another go thinking I had overdosed on Scifi Rom at the time... But maybe it really was boring??!! LOL

But the one I am really have trouble with is Night Embrace (Dark-Hunter, #2). I've been reading this book since March 2009. It is still next to my bed and occassionally I'll pick it up and read another few pages. But I WANT to finish it 'cos I have more books in the series waiting to be read! I have nearly taken all the Kenyon books to the book exchange just to clear them away and relieve my guilty conscience. I think I just can't stand the H/h in this book - I'm hoping the rest won't be so pathetic. Plus the 'gods' thing is pretty annoying...
