Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments They just haven't had GOOD carrot juice. You guys could do a blend - carrot, apple, mint, maybe (that's my fave from Central Market)?

Sarah | 13814 comments I taught the dental hygienist how to sharpen her knives when I was at the dentist today. Explained, in any case. They have a TV in the treatment room now, and it was showing Martha Stewart, and she was doing a whole segment on butchering, and the hygienist said her knives were dull and she didn't know how to sharpen them.

I will add a knive sharpening stone to the list of must-haves. Even if the truth is that I've never done it, only watched Zu, since that is her domain.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I haul my knives to the hardware store for sharpening. Heaven knows if I tried to do it myself, I would hit an artery.

I am not very good at knife sharpening. I think I don't get the angle right or something."

I think it is all about the angle. I'll ask Zu if there's any easy guideline to follow.

Mary (madamefifi) I have an electric knife sharpener that works just fine.

message 59: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Good knives only need sharpening in pretty long intervals. Cheap knives lose their sharp quickly. Daily honing on a steel will keep the edge straight and working well on a good knife.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Except, I like serrated knives, and you can't sharpen them. That I know of, anyways.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I have my great grandmother's old sharpening stone. :)

janine | 7709 comments my microwave-owning roommate moved out. now i'm trying to convince myself i really don't need a microwave, or do i? hm, other roommate does want one, i'll wait for #3.

You can't sharpen serrated knives. Zu will tell you that super-sharp non-serrated knives are best. If you cut yourself, the cut will be cleaner.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments get a Ginsu. they cut through a mobile home and still slice a tomato paper thin

I found that out too Bun, once you kind of stop using it, you find there are better if not easier ways of taking care of your food.

message 66: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i know i can live without a microwave, but if my roommates really want one i'm paying for my share. i usually only use the microwave to reheat leftovers when i'm eating alone, but there are other ways to do that.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Janine, I lived without a microwave for several years myself... I had a toaster oven, though, so that helped. As it stands, I'd prefer to reheat most of what I cook/prepare in the oven or on the stove top over doing it in the microwave on more times than not. It just seems to save the texture of the food when I do that. Microwaving seems to make everything chewy.

janine | 7709 comments microwaves do terrible things to potatoes.

Thanks :)

Hopefully Barb's Tori avatar is just in a glass box, not a microwave.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments recently i tried to dry some bhut jolokia peppers in our microwave. not paying attention, i caught them on fire sort of and when i opened the smoking microwave i inadvertently pepper gassed our entire house including everyone in it. it immediately knocked me to my knees and then my son and wife started yelling and ran out of the house. we had to open all the windows and doors and stay outside for like 45 mins and then it still was almost unbearable to be inside. the air had a bite to it when you breathed. funny to me but not my wife. ruined my peppers but i just bought some new plants to grow some more today. moral to the story: i am an idiot. again

They could probably create a twitter profile in the same vein of Shit My Dad Says, and I bet it'd go over well. :)

message 78: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments that is a good idea. i will suggest that to them. i will suggest the title

"yup...that's my dad"

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I have an Amana combination microwave/ convection oven. It was a lifesaver when we remodeled our kitchen. Big enough to beautifully roast a chicken, or handy enough to nuke a Lean Cuisine lunch.
