It's a common trope in zombie fiction for the undead to go unrecognized for a while. Of course, the reader always knows the truth - well usually. I wonder what everyone's favorite (scary or funny) "runaway" moment is from one or more novels or films?
I enjoyed Shaun'slack of reaction in Shaun of the Dead. His morning routine went uninterrupted after the dead started roaming. And in Keene's The Rising, although there was no doubt zombies were on the prowl, the scene in the forest with zombie-critters had me saying, "runaway" long before the chase started.
In the movie [Rec:], there's a scene where they suspect that this 7 yr. old girl is the carrier who's infecting everyone. At about that moment, her mom looks her in the eye, and the girl vomits blood all over her. Then screams and runs away. That's my vote.
For me it's the scene in Chikldren Shouldn't Play With Dead Things when the rotters come out of the ground and attack the two kids playing ghouls. I don't know which scene freaks me out more -- when the female zombie crawls out of the grave and claws her way up the kid's leg, or the groundskeeper who is tied to the tree, helpless, as the zombies walk by and notice him.
