I have wanted to read some of Mark Twain's books for some time. Are his novels easy reads?

They are pretty easy reads, but Tom Sawyer is pretty long. Huckleberry Finn is shorter - and to me, more interesting - but it's sort of a sequel to Tom Sawyer, so you might want to read that one first.

I've just finished Tom Sawyer, and found it very easy to read. Good fun too, a perfect read for the coming summer.
mark twain's books are my childhood books ..i remember i finished reading tom sawyer in one dayi really recommend his books they re soooo entertaining
....the original? It's easy but you sometimes have to stop and like translate their speech into modern speech (for me anyways~ )
I was actually very bored reading 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.' I was expecting it to be entertaining, but I was disappointed and don't intend to read 'The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn.' :/
I don't think the books are light reading in the context that they are rather food for thought. The phrasing seems light but they go deeper in context. Tom Sawyer to me seemed a manipulative type of person when he had the others whitewash the fence. Cunning, too.
Tom Sawyer is a fun book, but it's pretty heavy too. There's some definite food for thought (as others have said above me)
its beautiful to say the least...they are a little old-world i.e refined and detailed English...but they aren't like hardy...its a pleasant read, memorable to say the least
I also read Tom Sawyer as a kid and enjoyed it immensely. I think the Sunday School scene with the colored tickets is one of the funniest sequences I have ever read. I don't know if I would go all the way to easy, but it was not a difficult read.I would not read Huck Finn though before Tom Sawyer. You can, but the background from Tom Sawyer is very helpful in understanding the book.
You can read it as easy, if you don't stop and think too much about what the times were like for people of color.
I read Tom Sawyer last year for a school summer project...LOVED IT! I think it is not a super easy read (but it was kind of hard since i had a bunch of work to go along with it) but pretty easy. I definitely recommend it!
It wasn't easy read for my 9y daughter. she complained it was not easy to read and she didn't understand a lot of sentences in Tom Sawyer and in Huck Finn and needed dictionary under hand. Because of that she was missing pleasure of fluent reading. What age is best for reading this books. she is from Chicago and some Mississippi slang was hard for her for understanding too.
yeah!its easy, fun and enjoyable.
Beautifully written in a "folksy" style, Tom and Huck are easy to read. The only problem is putting them down again
Mark Twain is divine! There are many layers of subtlety and satire in all his works. Tom Sawyer is a longer, less-controversial precursor to Huckleberry Finn, Twain's novel about the improbable escapades of Huck and an escaped slave, Jim. Perhaps TS moves a mite slower than HF, but it was written with a different purpose and agenda.
I have read the complete works of Mark Twain numerous times in my life, beginning as an early adolescent and coming back to it every few years. I've spent two decades with Twain and it still doesn't feel like enough.
To fully appreciate his work, get a little primer on the man himself--you'll start to see who he was and why he wrote what he did. Wikipedia can be a good start!

Tom is about 12 in the book, if I remember right.
Tom Sawyer is a fairly easy read because it was written for children. There is a lot for adults to enjoy in it, too, and Mark Twain's satiric nature comes shining through. As an intro to his books, yes, Tom is a good place to start.
For bonus fun, read the book aloud to yourself. The dialect is more fun to hear than to read and it makes the book more engaging.

If I remember correctly, Tom Sawyer was fairly easy when I was younger (after the giggling over the 'orgy' was complete). lol But I avoid Huck Finn like the plague. I was required to read it three times and each time was worse than before. I'm from a country town, but really!? The language had me spittin' mad. (>.<)
My 9 year old daughter is reading it (and I'm re-reading it, to remember, and to know if she skipped some chapter!). So, yes, it's very easy and amusing.
It is easy, but I would not call it light. This is one of my least favorite books. Unfortunately. I would go with Huckleberry Finn, it seemed more interesting to me.
Sean wrote: "I have wanted to read some of Mark Twain's books for some time. Are his novels easy reads?"I liked it... the language is a little different because it was written quite some time ago, but it was not particularly challenging to me when I was 13 or so.
I am currently re-reading Tom Sawyer on my Nook. I read it many years ago, when I was in middle school. I do not think it is hard, but my grandson did not like it. I enjoy the language and read it aloud sometimes.
It is pretty light. It is fun to read as a kid, but I think you appreciate it more as an adult. It was one of the books that inspired me to write Chase The Wild Pigeons.
