How do you list unknown editions?

Here's something I've been wondering about for a while: when you know you read a book, but you don't know what edition/ISBN you read, how do *you* list it in your bookshelves? Or do you not list it until you know the correct edition?

Oftentimes, if I want to add a book I read long ago but I don't own, I'll search for the book, and if none of the covers look familiar or the publication dates don't match, I'll pick one of the editions with the least information, just so I can have it as a placeholder on my shelf. Other times, I won't put the book on my shelf until I know the exact edition.

What's your process?

Danine (dulcemea) I list the closest addition I can find and make a private note to myself to update when I find the correct edition.

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I generally just pick the default edition, or whichever one has the closet cover-art. I've come across this issue quite a lot when listing Nancy Drew books, as none of the 70s and 80s UK editions which I have are listed. It is a bit irritating not being able to list the actual copy which I have, but it's not too much of a big deal.
