ARE YOU A ONE BOOK AT A TIME READER?

That's the nice thing about being on holiday. You can start a book, read the book, enjoy, or not enjoy the book, finish it and pick up another book. Day to day life is fragmented and it makes us fragmented readers, dipping in and out of books and Kindles like pigeons picking at the flotsam and jetsam in the gutters. Only answer: have more holidays.

The holiday thing sounds like a good idea, Chloe. Trouble is if you write fulltime you don't get holidays. Fortunately I write faster than I read. I'm such a slow reader if I tried two books at a time, I'd never finish either of them.

I just ordered The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany. Not sure why but a couple people have recommended it.1254 pages
In hardcover
I'm looking forward to falling asleep with my thumb pinned in the book.

exactly!

Usually I have several books going at once. Right now I am reading a historical mystery and a teen spy novel. I also read in print and ebook formats.
I'm impressed with all you guys who have these many dimensional brains, and are able to concentrate on more than one book at at time. I can only manage one, especially after a heavy day's writing.
Am I a one book at a time reader? Yes, I am! I read mystery/suspense novels almost exclusively and I read them one at a time. I need to "get into" a story and the way I do that is to focus on one book at a time.

I used to read several books at a time - but these days I mostly read one book - on the bus ride to work.

If I tried to read more than one at a time I'd end up forgetting which clue came from which book. :)
Sorry I haven't read all the comments in the thread. I don't have that much time but I love to read more than one book at a time. My top limit, though, is 3 books, otherwise it gets too confusing. It's an interesting way to read -- you don't get bogged down in slow parts because you have something else going on. I usually do this when one of the books is on audio -- I love audio books -- and one is a good old fashioned one and one is due at the library right away.

very well put Val!! I also try to limit myself to 3

I'm a speed reader, so I'll often read two books in a single evening. If it's something that I'm really enjoying, though, I'll slow down and take my time within the world of the words. For example, reading "Lord of the Rings" takes me about a week each time. When I was in high school, I finished an awful translation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" within a few hours, but moaned about it the whole time. I re-read it later with a good translation and took my time. Language is an important thing.

now you should watch the re-mastered DVD of the classic 1930 Film adaption with Lew Ayres and Louis Wolheim- unforgetable!!!

Until recently, never more than one book. About the time I got my Kindle, however, along with the apps for PC and iPhone, that all changed. First I tried two, and now I'm doing three. I'm waaaaaaayy beyond my previous comfort zone. Now, if I could just learn to speed read... nah--too much ADD. Anyone like sailing? I think I'm going to go get Chinese food now.

I think if I only read one book at a time, my brain would deflate out of boredom. But, that's just me. ;-)

Good idea!"
Amazing a film over 80 years old can still pack such an emotional punch!

I pretty much read one book at a time. When I'm "Currently Reading" more than one book, it's usually because I've put one completely on pause while I'm reading another.
When I'm reading more than one at a time I eventually get to a point in one of the books where I exclusively read that one to the end because I am totally hooked. Unless I have a library book due -- then I finish that one.
The only time I shift to just one is when I have a book group discussion coming up and I still need to finish the book.
Well. . .that's a complicated question. I read one fictional book at a time for me, but that's not the only book I'm probably reading. I'm also reading a book each night for my daughters at bedtime (right now we're waist-deep in Narnia and have gotten to The Silver Chair). I'm also usually reading a book with my oldest daughter for her schoolwork and then writing comprehension/story-crafting question (right now, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone). Then I have books for school on top of that, but those are nonfiction. So my final answer is that I read 1+ book at a time.
I try for one book at a time. I always like to finish a book so sometimes if I lose interest I will start another before getting back to the first.
I'm definitely a one book at a time reader. Though, if the book I'm reading at the time doesn't grab my interest too strongly, I have drifted to another book before returning to my original book.

haha same for you..I say this because I read alot of books at a time- take Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy- been reading for over 5 months- finally finished- after reading over 70 books at same time!

Haa! Interesting question. I often start out reading more than one at a time and almost always like one of them better than the rest. Therefore, I turn into a one at a time reader because I tend to devour the book I like best, leaving the other(s) sit until I finish it.

Chasta- happens to me too! Rob Roy took me over 5 months to read!! enjoyed it...in small amounts at a time- read about 50 books during same time

Just started Game of Thrones and it will be a fulltime job. Normally I go back and forth but not on this one.Wally
ADD here, have to read several at once! Usually 7 to 10 at a time. Usually 1 on my nook 1 really long project (read Game of Thrones) 1 paper back easy to take places, a couple of series going (now it is James Patterson Mamimum ride and JR Ward Black Brotherhood), usually a ya book, a horror book and whatever else I just cannot wait to start reading lol. Psycho reader, that's me.
Never! I always have at least 4-5 books going. Sometimes more. I've often wished I could read two books at once, one eye each! Ha!
By way of clarification, the iPad has made multiple formats unnecessary so I don't have to read more than one at a time
Sometimes have two or three on the go.......so I can snatch paragraphs as I pass through various rooms of the house!
I know, multitasking is the the women. Don't know why but I hate multitasking. Multitasking is for expeditious closure. When I read I want to take my time and savor the words and ideas.
My bookshelves are dynamic ~ a living, breathing resource of non-fiction titles, generally nurtured by the buzz of frequent traffic as I flirt with multiple copies at a time! Some days, it's a single page, even a paragraph or line that I am drawn to, when I feel the urge, during a precious moment ~ albeit brief, but worthwhile! My bookshelves move from time-to-time, room-to-room along with my moods, and at times they stand still and quiet; present, yet unattended, for a little while!

Wally..I love to have multiple books going..but as we near the end of the year- I am reading James Mason member books only as I always place their books above all others and I want to complete my reviews.

Hi. I cannot read one at a time!! I have one in each room of the house, one in the bag, one in the class. I cannot bare to waste even ten minutes sitting idly while i could be reading something!!!
I can't read one at at a time, even though I would prefer it. Too many focuses, too many good books.
