Rick, you are everywhere...confess man, are you actually a tribe of 300 in some obsure location with a satelite hookup and rows of laptops? maybe plotting to take over the world or something like that?

*Suzy (ereaderuser)* (suzyereaderuser) @Mark

Hilarious! I've been thinking the same thing. And wondering how Rick has time to do so much reading.

Hey Suzy. Maybe we should start an "All About Rick" discussion topic and we can make up stories about him.

message 505: by Lalalalaaa (new)

Lalalalaaa | 17 comments I usually read 2-4 books at a time so that I have one for every mood. There's nothing worse than forcing yourself to read a book you'd normally like, but that you're not in the mood for. It's not fair to the book, either. It deserves to be loved. I used to have a strict rule against it, but I ALSO had a rule against not finishing a book I'd already started... which made me lose interest in reading for a while.

Well, you're doing a fine job, Rick. Especially considering that you're on a mission with MI6 to weed out the true James Mason fans from the posers...or something like that?

message 513: by Deedee (new)

Deedee I usually am reading 4-5 books at a time. I do have a one per fiction genre rule, plus no more than 3 non-fiction. Right now I have 2 non-fiction history books, 1 fantasy, 1 science fiction, and a "serious lit" book going. I will toss books that lose my interest -- maybe 5 percent of books that I start. I also attempt to read a part of each book I have going every day. (Before I started doing that, I'd have a dozen or more going.)

message 514: by Janet (new)

Janet | 2 comments I always have at least one actual book going and one audio book going in my car.

message 515: by Helena (new)

Helena Normally, I have a book in my bedroom- I must read before going to sleep. This is my 'serious' book. I have an audio book in the car for my commute, but nothing too detailed- I get distracted easily; and I keep a book in the living room just for dipping into throughout the day when I have a minute.

message 516: by Charles (new)

Charles (charlesdefrancis) | 4 comments I usually read one book at a time but on the occasions that I read two, one is usually fiction while the other is nonfiction. I like to immerse myself in a story and stay with it until the end.

message 517: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) Rick must read really fast, too! I cannot keep up a fast pace. I try, but find myself slowing down. :-)

7 seems to be my magic number. I just finished a book and am trying not to pick up another to replace it ... want to get through a couple of big books. I will NEVER choose 4 really big books to read at the same time!!

message 518: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melro14) | 2 comments I am a one book at a time reader. I make myself finish every book I start. Although I would say I enjoy the vast majority of the books I read.

message 519: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 3 comments Generally, I read more than one at a time. They are usually of varying genres and I read what I'm in the mood for.

Some books such as FirstReads or popular library books take priority.

message 520: by Carmin (new)

Carmin I read multiple books at a time. Normally, I'll have an audio book on my ipod and at least two books going at the same time.

HAHA! well Martha- I do read fast- also I have so many great books from members that I feel a need- and a great desire.. to read and review

message 522: by [deleted user] (new)

Rick, I have to get to know you, my friend. The greatest desire to read I have, but not the greatest desire to review. Sometimes I don't even care if a book is great or not, it's that I admire the effort, if it's there.

To your origal question, which I answered elsewhere here, I read up to 15 or 20 of the most complicated (no mathematics, but physics is fine) books I can lay my hands on, like a miner grabbing hefty golden nuggets. Probably the most difficult book I have tackled is Idea of Phenomenology by Husserl.

I've been blessed to win several books in the giveaways here so I try to have 2 of those going at a time to get through them so I can review. Wish I could keep up a fast reading pace though. :-) I'm watching less & less tv though and my dvr is filling up!!

Martha (marthas48) I love TCM! However, my 3 yr old granddaughter is with us & I see some Yo Gabba Gabba in my future!! :-)

message 527: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't underestimate the little ones. Saw in listings a program, rated TV-Y7, "The Transmogrification of Eunice." Do 7-year-olds really use that word?

message 528: by Carrie (new)

Carrie LeAnne I generally have three or four books going at once, plus an audio book for driving/working out.

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Does your two year old use blasphemy in sentences. Where did this child hear the word?

message 531: by [deleted user] (new)

Robin wrote: "Does your two year old use blasphemy in sentences. Where did this child hear the word?"

Pretty funny! My grandson at the age of 3, stepped into mud, then taking a step back mumbled, just like his mother (my daughter), "S--t!S--t! S--t!" hammering two at his side, in the air, just like her.

That is where they usually get it. :)

message 532: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, glad I am not the only one. I read between 4-6 books at a time. A Patterson or Conroy, a fluff, a serious one and King or Koontz. Keeps all the basis covered.

Read an article by Stephen King, whom I admire, he said, as a writer, if you do not read, you do not have the tools of your trade, therefore you cannot do well.

How true!

Yes, two year olds do imitate what they hear. When I was a small child, my mother used to call us kids "clumsy" when we dropped things. One day in the supermarket my mother dropped something and my brother shouted "clumsy". He was two years old at the time. My mother never called us "clumsy" again.

LOL! Robyn that is so cute. I am sure she noted the shock on your face and made sure she used it more often. Yes, they are recorders.

message 535: by Tom (new)

Tom Wiseman | 2 comments I am definitely a one book at a time reader. When I read, which is pretty much everyday, I like to immerse myself completely into the story, which for me, only comes when my mind is focused on a single novel.
Some folks may be able to keep multiple stories in their head at a time, remembering the characters and plot of each, but sadly, I am not one of those people.

I have never listened to a novel on CD, though I have listened to the Bible on tape. I think I might start doing that however, it sounds like a great way to pass windshield time!

message 540: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Sometimes I do read two at a time. but then the plots blend together and I have to just read one at a time. Or I have to remember that certain books contain this or that, etc. LOL

I've been listening to audio books during my commute for several years now & wouldn't change that. I love the books. Occasionally I'll switch back to music ... my son & I love Christmas music so we always listen to that from Thanksgiving on which drives everyone else crazy! LOL Sometimes I find that I'm too distracted to stay focused on the book so I'll switch to music for a day or 2. I can also listen while I do mundane stuff ... housework, painting, etc. If I find I've missed something, it's easy to skip back a few seconds or to start that particular chapter over. Much easier on the iPhone that I use now than it was on my old mp3 player.

As far as books go, I have 8 on my currently reading list, but I find I mainly stick to 3 or 4 and they usually are different genres, time periods. Right now I'm in WW2 Britain (non-fiction), present day Hollywood (mystery), & eighteenth century England (classic).

I always listened to music, news, or sports radio in the past, until a few months ago. Listening to the stories in the car is so much more fun!

At Christmastime as I baked and decorated about 25 dozen cookies I brought the CDs into the kitchen and it was/is a great way to pass the time as well.

message 544: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 38 comments When I was working and using mass transit, I was 2 books at a time reader: 1 paperback that I carried in my purse for lunchtime and riding on MUNI or BART and a hardback at home for after supper and bedtime. Now, it's usually one book at a time since I like to find our what happened a.s.a.p. I always read as fast as possible fo find our how it ends. Unless I am going to a doctor's appt. then it's a paperback in my purse again while I wait and wait and wait.

Rick-Founder JM CM BOOK CLUB | 7280 comments Mod
I have been doing well with the multi-reads lately- as long as the genres are different- I have been able to juggle quite a few!

message 546: by Sammy (new)

Sammy Sutton (sammysutton) | 6 comments I am usually reading 3 to 5 books at a time that are focused around my next novel's research, and then at least one fiction I am reading for pleasure and/or review.

Sammy- the books your read for research- are they fiction or non-fiction or a combo?

message 549: by Sammy (new)

Sammy Sutton (sammysutton) | 6 comments Non-fiction, therefore at the end of the day, my reading list is heavy in non-fiction.

message 550: by Erin (new)

Erin Germain (demiguise) Oh, dear, no. I always have at least two books going at the same time. They are always quite different in subject, style, and time period, but I like that. I'm long since out of school, nor do I have to read for my work, so cracking a book open is always for pleasure. I'm never quite sure what I'll be in the mood for, so it's nice to have more than one option on hand.
