Raito translates to Light, so that might be the reason, and fansub called him Light that might be it too, and most America doesn't know what Raito means so that might be the reason as well...

Well most of America doesn't understand what the other names mean either, but I do see the producers point thought. The meaning of the word "Light" holds a certain amount of significance to the character so they had to translate it for the English speaking countries.
