The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. This is by far the best book I've ever read, although not horror it is definitely worth a read.
I recommend the original V.C Andrews books to many people..some of my other favorites are The Lovely Bones, fried Green tomatoes, lonesome dove, the last unicorn,...and to anyone that is a science fiction fan you can't go wrong with Ray Bradbury.
I've been doing my best to get my husband to listen to 14 but he is so stubborn! I also tried & tried to get him to read Eragonbut to no avail. he likes h.p. lovecraft & fantasy and I know he would like both of those but noooo!!! :p
Okay, so every situation has an exception: If I could find the person responsible for making me read Hemingway in high school I would assign him or her the Tom Robbins novel, Still Life With Woodpecker.....and test them on it.

You should kidnap them and force them to read it. If they try to escape, well.....you know what to do."

I always say the classics of Dracula and Frankenstein. Read the books or watch the movies but for the love of god at least do one or the other. I came across someone who asked, Dracula? Is that the main vampire dude whose afraid of garlic?Yes...it's the main vampire dude whose afraid of garlic...was has become of our society?
A book I'd force people to read? Sorry, can't do it. I have 2 that I beg horror lovers to read. Mark Z. Danielewski's 'House of Leaves' & Dathan Auerbach's 'Penpal' are 2 of my favorite horror books not written by THE King. HOL is a mindf--k unlike any book you've ever read and to even attempt to describe what it's about does it an injustice. Penpal, which I just read a few months back, is hands down the creepiest book I've ever read. It's basically a guy telling us about a series of events that happened to him an his beat friend over 10 or so years. Every chapter packing a hell of a gut punch at the end but after the story has been told, the author outs a strange footnote to the story that makes the tale that much scarier. Both are most definitely worth a read if you haven't done so already.
