message 2: by Elley (new)

Elley Murray (elleyotter) I really like SyFy's "Alice." Also, Disney's latest "The Princess and the Frog" is pretty great. I LOVED Disney's "Cinderella" and "The Little Mermaid" growing up, too!

Abby - I agree, "Ever After" was a GREAT movie! <3

Abby~*walking in the rain*~ (wickedlovely) | 14 comments OMG!!!!! i LOVE syfy's alice !!!! it got me hooked on alice in wonderland !!! ya the princess and the frog was cute and i liked the other disney classics but idk i just didnt like how they met once in the forest, sang a song together then the next thing you know there getting married !! that was why i absolutely loved Ever After it was the same story and they only knew each other for a very short amount of time and yet it was belivable that they would get married

omg I love that one
I also like Ella enchanted (but the book is better)

message 5: by Tia (new)

Tia (tianevitt) My daughter and I love Ever After. I'll have to try Ella Enchanted.

Abby~*walking in the rain*~ (wickedlovely) | 14 comments you might like ellla enchanted if you never read the book

message 7: by Elley (new)

Elley Murray (elleyotter) Ella Enchanted is one of my all time favorite books, so of course I was totally psyched when I heard they were making a movie version.

Then I saw the movie.

...UGH. They did this to me with Howl's Moving Castle as well. Guess I just should NOT see movies based on my Top 5 Best Loved Books, huh? x.x;;

I know they changed and skipped everything

I know but they changed all the characters around as well ella was so different in the movie

Abby~*walking in the rain*~ (wickedlovely) | 14 comments ya she was older and i didnt like that the uncle killed the prince's dad

message 12: by Tia (new)

Tia (tianevitt) Ok, so I guess I won't see Ella Enchanted. I hate it when the movie version mangles the book version. Were they trying to make it more dramatic?

Abby~*walking in the rain*~ (wickedlovely) | 14 comments i think so.. but it came off kinda dumb

message 14: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Wojtaszek | 8 comments Any of you seen Ponyo? It used to be on Netflix but I can't find it anymore. My 4 year old and I really enjoyed it! It is like a Japanese version of The Little Mermaid. Here is what Wikipedia says about it: "The film was written, directed, and animated by Hayao Miyazaki, who said his inspiration was the Hans Christian Andersen story, "The Little Mermaid" but his inspiration was more abstract than a story."

message 15: by Jessi (new)

Jessi | 10 comments Everything Disney, Ever After, Red Riding Hood (think that's the title? The newest Little Red Riding Hood movie)i'm sure there's more just not thinking of them all right now

message 16: by Jessi (new)

Jessi | 10 comments Yes that one i thought it was pretty good

message 17: by Jessi (new)

Jessi | 10 comments Well I watch a lot of scary movies so to me it wasn't that scary but if you get scared easily I wouldn't watch it

message 18: by Mia (new)

Mia (hotwolfie) | 9 comments Ever After! I loved the costumes, makeup, cast, and the ending. The Princess Bride's also up there on my list. Both are pretty awesome.

message 19: by Danielle (last edited Dec 24, 2011 08:42AM) (new)

Danielle | 48 comments Hmmm. This is a tough one! I like a lot of fairytale movies. I LOVE Tangled, but I also like The Snow Queen and a ton of other movies. I will have to think on this one a bit.

message 20: by Mia (new)

Mia (hotwolfie) | 9 comments Did anyone ever see Snow White: A Tale of Terror? I didn't think it was too shabby for a Snow White retelling.

message 21: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed Mia wrote: "Ever After! I loved the costumes, makeup, cast, and the ending. The Princess Bride's also up there on my list. Both are pretty awesome."

I like how empowered the women are in Forever After--very compelling interpretation!

Jennifer | 1 comments Danielle wrote: "I also like The Snow Queen and a ton of other movies."

I really liked that one, too!

Snow White: A Tale of Terror is definitely scary! Another in that vein would be In the Company of Wolves.

Abby~*walking in the rain*~ (wickedlovely) | 14 comments has anyone seen snow white and the huntsman??? it looks really good but i havent seen it yet

message 24: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 48 comments It is actually pretty good. I was skeptical since Kirsten Stewart is in it, but she does a good job.

message 25: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed I've heard such good things about Snow White and the Huntsman from people I trust! The only criticism people have expressed is that they wish the director/scriptwriter had taken a little more time to make the audience bond with Snow/Kristen Stewart so they could root more for her. It's a hard sell to bill her as "fairer" than the Evil Queen/Charlize Theron! But everyone loved Charlize Theron's ferociousness and the gorgeous sets/costumes/cinematography. Can't wait to see it!

Shereen Vedam | 50 comments First I should say Hi, I just joined this group the other day (waves :).

And I'm with Abby and Tia on this question - Ever After was one of my favorite movies based on a fairy tale (Cinderella). I also loved Three Nuts for Cinderella (old Czeck film).

I did a quick movie review of both Mirror Mirror (3 out of 5 - romance was well done) and Snow White and the Huntsman (4 out of 5 - fantasy aspects were excellent) on my blog (...if interested, find the review off my name on GoodReads).

message 27: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Wampler (hlwampler) | 5 comments Disney's Cinderella will forever be my absolute favorite. Beauty and the Beast is a close second. Tangled is super cute too.

For the none animated, I liked Ella Enchanted, and Alice in Wonderland (With Johnny Dep),

Just out of curiosity, did you read the book Ella Enchanted before or after watching the movie? I'm curious, because not many people say they like the movie if they've read the book first.

message 29: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Wampler (hlwampler) | 5 comments I actually have not read Ella Enchanted. I'm sure if I read it the movie wouldn't be a favorite. lol

I'm not a fan of most book turned movie. So many are just...meh, compared to the writing.

Yeah They can be. I read the book first. Then I saw the movie and freaked out about how off it was from the book.
Then I watched the movie several more times and started to like the movie apart from the book. It has its good parts.

message 31: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Wampler (hlwampler) | 5 comments I read the Harry Potter books, (I know...not a fairy tale) and then saw the movies. At first I was so put off by the movies because it left so much out that was in books, but now...I love em. There are actually a few that make me cry every time I watch them.

I think I might have to add Ella Enchanted to my list of to-reads.

message 32: by S.G. (new)

S.G. (s-girl) | 3 comments I think I really enjoyed the Snow White and the Huntsman story except for the ambiguous ending. Sad to hear tonight that the next version might just skip Snow White and go with "The Huntsman." I kind of felt like the story needed better closure and just a bit more padding on the story.

The Queen was the best character in the movie with the most twisted and interesting history so far. One wondered if the mirror was what the Queen thought it was. Won't spoil why, but there's an amazing scene with her brother watching her that made me go "OH. WHAT!"

Snow and Huntsman's relationship needed just a little more time to incubate too. I felt like a few things that happened later in the movie didn't ring true.

MOre or less though I think I like The Princess Bride most of all live action films. It is a good adaptation of the novel from which it's taken and extremely cool to be able to watch with guys and girls... so few "fairy tale" movies can speak to both men and women otherwise.

I completely agree about Snow White and the Huntsman, but what do you mean about the next version?

message 34: by Leah (last edited Sep 03, 2012 01:27PM) (new)

Leah (flying_monkeys) Well my two favorites aren't "movies," per se.

Did anyone else watch (and LOVE!!) The Storyteller (1988) and/or The 10th Kingdom (2000)? I own both and watch them way too much. :)

P.S. I agree with Mia and Jennifer on Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997). That movie showed the audience what original fairy tales were like, which wasn't all roses, singing princesses, and happy endings.

There were rumors that the screenwriter walked off as the studio moved to remove Kristen Stewart from the next film due to the whole Kristen Stewart/Rupert Sanders story came to light . Since then the studio ba cktracked on the idea of abandoning the lead Snow White, but now no one knows what is going to happen to the project.

OMG if Tim Burton directed it I would probably be the happiest person in the world!! omggg could you imagine all that gothic inspired stuff!!

message 38: by Alisha (new)

Alisha | 10 comments As far as Disney is concerned, my favorite movie is the Little Mermaid. No doubt about it :-)

I have to admit that I'm really psyched over Hollywood's recent interest in bringing back newer adaptations of the classics. A few favorites include: Alice in Wonderland, Red Riding Hood, Snow White & the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror and I've recently started getting into the Grimm series (not a movie, but I'm throwing it out there anyway :-))

Sorry for the confusion - I meant the television series :-)

I heard that they are going to try and make Carolyn Turgeon's "Mermaid" into a film, but I don't know if that's fact or fiction.

I definitely hear you on the Cinderella remakes though. WAY too overdone!

Oh my goodness! I don't blame you. The series is awesome and I'm pumped to see the rest of it.

As for Mermaid, be sure to let me know what you think! I'm interested to see how others feel--I've heard a lot of mixed reviews :)

Liz (lizgotauco) Ever After, for sure. And Jim Henson's Storyteller series did an episode called "Sapsorrow" that was part "Princess in Disguise" and part "Cinderella" that I loved.
