OK well in the vid game rayman runs around the game and his shadow is right behind him... becuase u kno its his SHADOW and if the shadow beats u to the end u loose. its a really fun game i dont own it anymore :(

dar, that is a very good understanding of a shadow, however, do you think it is possible that that definition is more of a 'personal shadow' (not you personaly) but like everyone's personal shadow? To my theory of your shadow having its own 'personality' and 'mind', but not actions, because the sun creates it in the shape of the one who has an opposite or same evil/goodness? of course, if there was 'dark light' then it could possibly give a different personality or trait to the shadow, because dark is the opposite of light and sooo,... Example: An evil person (not really blatantly evil, just evil deep down) is walking in the *daylight* and so it has a shadow. even though this shadow can't walk or look it's own, (because technically it is the same person) it has an opposite personality because it's the shadow, not the real person, and the evil person walk into somewhere with the yet to be defined, dark light, and it once again has a shadow of him/herself, but the shadow is now evil, it was good in the light but now evil in the dark. (please give me some help weather or not the shadow is good or evil because of the personality of the person, i just loophole-d myself) this all could be a plot for a book, i think dario has a very good point. but stil..... :)

The shadow is the persons desires, what they want deep down.
Not -necessarily- good or evil.
the shadow is not the polar opposite of the person they come from, it just lacks their inhibitions and wants to achieve its/your goals at whatever cost.

Because the shadow has no inhibitions it expresses what you really feel.
Therefore the shadow acts on emotion it/you are happy on the same levels at the same time.
It/you are sad on the same levels at the same time.

The shadow is seen as a darker side because the shadow will tempt you to do whatever you can to be happy even though the things it/you want to do may go against your moral codes.

no prob! also, i agree that the shadow is the same, as described above, but when you say that the shadow is the persons desires, are we still talking about the visable shadow, cast by the sun? or a 'personal' shadow, inside the person and the shadow is a reminder to you of that inside-yourself-instinct?

the visible shadow is just the visible form of the personal shadow(they are the same thing)
