Sharon (linnefaulk) I have been using the iBooks app quite a bit. It works fine. I couldn't care less about the imitation book theme. In fact, it seems like some of the lines are actually skewed like a page might be. Or maybe it's me. That is the only thing I find annoying about iBooks.

I did start using Kindle for iPad this week. I have trouble getting the main menu controls to pop up so I can look at another book or look at the table of contents.

I am eagerly waiting the Barnes & Noble eReader for the iPad. That reader is closest to Fictionwise eReader which I have used for years and am most comfortable with.

Sharon (linnefaulk) I have figured out the kindle for iPad. It's OK. iBooks is just OK as well. eReader from Fictionwise & B&N eReader (essentially the same app) have the most options. Makes sense as they have been around the longest. But they aren't formatted for the iPad yet.

I have been using the Kindle app for both platforms as I love the whisper sync. Though having to go to amazon download to each device in a pain.

Looking forward to iBooks for iPhone. Then I will probably shop at apple more.

message 3: by Lori K (new)

Lori K I rcvd mine last week. I am an avid reader so already have read a few books. My biggest comment would be the weight of it. Otherwise I love it for the versatility. Internet etc.

Tho I wish I could turn off the book covers or lock out the book section, I love m/m books-the covers can very embarrassing and everyone grabs for my ipad the first chance they get! ha ha. Like a puppy or something!

Did you all notice they just updated Stanza for the ipad? i always used it on the ipod. Love the wireless feature. if only apple would incorporate that into ibook.

Raggedyann | 5 comments I absolutely love the iPad! As a reader, I like the color, double page display, ability to adjust the backlighting, and quick swipe page turning. The disadvantage for me is it's weight. It's just too heavy for me to use for long as an ereader. I do my reading laying down, so a stand is not a workable solution. I have ordered one of the new Kindles but I don't know that I will ever like it as much as the iPad.

message 5: by Rodrigo (new)

Rodrigo Mello (rdmello76) | 1 comments I read a few books on it, and I love it, specially the kindle app. I like to read at night, so the screen dimming feature is very handy. I also read on the iPhone, so the syncing feature is really a welcome highlight.

I don't mind the weight, but I guess it would be uncomfortable for longs periods of time. Like Lori said above, it's a fair trade of, versatility for a little bulk.

Wendalyn Peterson | 5 comments ~~*Julie wrote: "Help! Just got an IPAd how in the world do you use this sucker? I have an sony ereader..can i transfer my books from there to the IPAD? How?" I have a free app called IBooks I think it's in the app department this will use .epubs and .pdf files for your books and catagorize as such. Also I have Kindle for Ipad since I have a Kindle I can read all my kindle books on my Ipad. I haven't tried loading my .mobi books which Kindle use so far I have only loaded the books I bought or got at Amazon. Amazon has probably 12 - 20 free books a month so if you get them emailed to you as I do when they come out then you can download them for free... Make sense?

message 9: by Raggedyann (new)

Raggedyann | 5 comments B&N has spectacularly messed up their iPad Nook app. It can't find new books. There is no option to look for new books. Maybe this is because it can't even find the internet. It has received multiple negative reviews on iTunes. I also have the Nook, which I do not like. I prefer to read on the iPad.

I will be buying from amazon from now on. Their app actually works! Unlike the Nook app, Kindle app downloads books seamlessly and automatically.

I am so furious, I am considering selling my nook ereader on eBay.

message 10: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresa_bowen) My main reason for getting an iPad was to have an ereader that would allow me to get ebooks from many different sources. I have lots of different apps on my iPad for various ereaders and while I like Kindle a lot the app I find myself using most often is Kobo. Has anyone else tried it out?

message 11: by Raggedyann (new)

Raggedyann | 5 comments I haven't tried Kobo. I agree that the iPad is great for reading. It is however, too heavy for me to hold for long. I have tot use a stand for it when reading in bed, then I'm forced to remain in one position to read.

message 12: by Paul (new)

Paul (tdmsu) | 1 comments I like the Kindle app, and I use iBooks as well. I tried out the nook app, but B&N does their 14-day trials in an unusual way. I wanted to try newspapers on the nook app, but B&N charged my credit card immediately for a 14-day free trial! They simply refund if you cancel before the 2 weeks are up. I like Amazon's model better - no cost until after 2 weeks.

Will Saunders (willboywonder) | 1 comments I have a iPad and read e-books on it. I have been reading fiction and non-fiction on it and I like it. It has taken me a bit of a time getting acclimated to it though, since I’m fairly old-fashioned. It was particularly a challenge reading textbooks, since highlighting and making notes was awkward. But now, I love it and wish all students could have an iPad or e-reader for their books/studies. I enjoy mine immensely. I loaded several books on mine and most importantly, it’s nice that I can carry around dozens of books and only need a light-weight iPad. Lugging around actual books, like millions of students do around the world, is much too heavy.

Brent Knowles (brentknowles) | 2 comments Pretty thrilled with the iPad as a book reader. My only real complaint, like some of you above, was that I wish all my books could be in one app but I've gotten used to having them spread about in Stanza, Kindle, Kobo, et cetera.

Kobo, especially with Instapaper, is rapidly becoming my fave reader app on the device though.

I bought the Book Crawler app to help me keep track of where my books are. I imported my GoodReads library into it and now enter books there first. It has a format field that I use to tell which e-reader the book is in-Nookbook, Kindle, or iBook. I like using all three e-readers. It allow me to easily have three books going at once. So far I like the Nook the best for reading, but iBooks seems to have the best dictionary support.

message 16: by Brent (new)

Brent Knowles (brentknowles) | 2 comments Iris - thanks for the tip, I'll check the app out.

message 17: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (ssuths) | 5 comments I'm a librarian, so I'm getting all my books through My Media Mall through the Overdrive app. However, I can't figure out how to highlight or note or look words up in the dictionary the way I can with the books I've bought through ibooks. I can bookmark a page, but that's about it. A fellow librarian can do those things with books borrowed from the library through the Overdrive app. on her Color Nook, just by holding down her finger on the page. I've tried double-clicking, holding down my finger, etc. Anybody have any ideas? Tks.

Looks interesting. I had first tried Delicious Library but it doesn't have a functional iPhone or iPad app. Now I use Bento. But I might see what this is about with the Lite version.

Wendalyn Peterson | 5 comments I love my ipad for reading I use it now 100% vs my Kindle. I love the backlight I read when my husband is sleeping in bed LOL. I use the Kindle for Ipad and Ibook I think it's called for apps. My only complaint is I can out read my battery life and when that happens I know it's time to stop reading and take a break haha.

I just bought this on Iris's advice so let you know what I think of it. I have hundreds of ebooks it might take me a bit to organize lol

I did on day one. I love the speed. Twice as fast as the 1.

I didn't have the first one so I can't compare really

I did. The 1 was pretty quick but the 2 makes Speedy Gonzalez look like Regular Gonzalez. Also it's lighter and thinner. I like the smart case too, it doesn't add bulk and weight. Many other little advancements too, like FaceTime and whatnot.

message 27: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie I don't really care for that smart cover. I"d like one with front and back protection

message 28: by mike jay (new)

mike jay (mikeaj) ☻Bobbie☻ wrote: "I don't really care for that smart cover. I"d like one with front and back protection"

Me too. But you don't have to give up the smart cover. This one...
http://www.marware.com/ipad-kindle-ca... ...fits on the the back but still allows the smart cover to work just as it would without it. It is on preorder now but it looks to me like the best bet to not add bulk and weight. You won't lose the magnet and awake/sleep function with this either.

Here is the skinny on it...
"The Marware MicroShell Apple iPad 2 case is an ultra-sleek, polycarbonate shell designed to suit up and protect the back of your mobile tablet against scratches and impact. With a stylish rubberized finish, its flexible one-piece design snaps on easily and preserves the sleek design of the iPad 2 so you can dress your tablet up and use it alone or in conjunction with the Apple iPad Smart Cover lid, a sleeve, bag or carrying pouch. For an elegant, minimalist approach to protecting your iPad 2, keep it simple with the MicroShell iPad 2 cover."

Yeah, I guess it is a lot. But if you resell these things every year like me it's worth it. Plus the resell is better with a couple of cover options.

Re. Bookcrawler... I was able to use the csv import to bring in my list from GoodReads. The BookCrawler website has the formatting information. She has also added a barcode scanner that will help with hardcopies if you have an iPad2 or iPhone.

Our library is using Overdrive also. I haven't been able to highlight or look up words with it either. Did you ever find a way to do it?

Bobbie I convert all my books to epub and just email them to myself. Works great for me

message 34: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (ssuths) | 5 comments ☻Bobbie☻ wrote: "I convert all my books to epub and just email them to myself. Works great for me"
Can you elaborate on this? What reader do you ultimately use to read them? Thanks.

message 35: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie I use iBooks and use stanza or calibre to convert them.
I convert them on my pc and email them to myself and open the the book on my email on my iPad. When you open them they will store on you iBooks bookshelf.
Most of the books I have and find I like are in PDF form. I Have not found a reading app I like at all for PDF files so converting them to ePub files works great.

Calibre works the best for this since you can fix those generic book covers.

TL My problem with reading on my iPad rather than holding a book. Is the silent internal struggle of trying not to check email, tweets, the latest apps, tomorrows weather etc...
Is it just me?
Currently reading Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter

Once I start the book I usually get engrossed in it and don't think about email or other apps. For me the problem can be getting started. Tonight I checked emails and am now replying to this when I originally sat down to read before heading to bed! Other times my reading time has been swallowed up by "just one more game" of Angry Birds.

Tonight I am reading Tartuffe.

Raggedyann | 5 comments I wish the iPad kindle app had another font between the 2nd and 3rd. One's too big and one's too small. We need one for the middle that would be just right. __

Lyla Bellatas (lylabellatas) Hi all! I love my iPad. I prefer iBooks but I use the kindle app too when the book isn't available in iBooks. I fight the urge to check my e--mails. ;-)

message 42: by Lori K (new)

Lori K Hi All, is anyone having the following problem since the most recent update-every time I sync, itunes puts back all the books I removed.

I only want the books on my ipad that I am currently reading and it used to be that when you synced, it "knew" that you had previously removed the books. Now it does not remember that.

Driving me nuts. I do have the box marked "selected" books rather than "all" books checked. Urgh!
