message 410: by Lyrical (new)

Lyrical (lyricalbrown) Hi everyone!

If you're like me and are a bit sick of having to trawl through thousands of dark romances to get to a YA book that doesn't involve a vampire or a werewolf then please join my new Goodreads group - No Dark Romance Allowed - to find and discuss YA fiction of all genres EXCEPT dark romance.

Hoorah!

message 411: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 240 comments Hey Lyrical! I like some Dark Romance (don't hate me) :D

I do too. Occasionally.

message 413: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
I hate dark romances so I'm with you Lyrical. Mortal Instruments and Twilight (and all their rip off's) are just not for me. At all.

message 414: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) I only really like the MI trilogy. Everything thing else is just blah. I think I should invent the love pentagon.

message 415: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
Ack, I love Mortal Instruments. I care more about the action than the romance in those books, although I like the romance as well––it just gets annoying and over-the-top at times. But, I really like all the characters. (Except Clary, she's a pain.)

But yeah, a lot of the Twilight/MI rip-offs are really terrible. After I read the a millionth book that was like, "A MYSTERIOUS MAGICAL BOY WALKS INTO MY LIFE" I was like, Okay. No more of these books. Ever.

message 416: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) Haha. Brigid. I know. I hate books with the "He's so dangerous. I like him" theme. Haha. I can name about 10 books with that same theme.

City of Bones
Evermore
Twilight
Fallen

Those are just a few. Ha.

Hush Hush, The Hourglass Door, Shiver, Darkest Powers, Firelight ... Yada yada. I could just keep going and going. :P

message 418: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) In the Darkest Powers trilogy, two mysterious boys came into her life. Ha.

Ooh, Shiver. Forgot about that one. I truthfully did not like the book even though the werewolves thing was pretty original. They had sex in the first book. I was horrified and disturbed.

message 419: by Aela (new)

Aela Thank you Heidi,Lyrical, and Picture!I am a bit sick of all those dark romances myself. In truth,I never read a book for it's romance factor and if I find out that it has an 'obsessive over-the-top romance' and/or the 'mysterious boy' thing, the book is lessened somewhat in my mind.

Agreed,with Shiver.That wasn't necessary.D:

Does Darkness Rising count as one of those? :P
But I'll be one to admit it wasn't that bad XD

message 420: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
I like Shiver. And I kind of liked that they had sex in it ... not because I'm a perv, but because I thought it was realistic. Like, a lot of teens do rush into it and I think that was the point.

AND AT LEAST THEY DID IT SAFELY! Heh heh.

Darkness Rising ... I don't know. I'm only like 100 pages into it, but I do like it. And I liked Darkest Powers, too.

message 421: by Aela (new)

Aela Haha nice one XD Bu I do agree,it was realistic.

Yeah same here.It was good,actually,surprisingly.

..."

Yeah, I know about the realistic thing. I still don't like it. I'm not saying her writing is bad. No. I loved her writing. It was well balanced and stuff. I just not much of a fan of the story. Haha.

I don't know about safe sex in books anymore. It forever creeps me out when the guy is like, "Look what I have" and it's a condom. *barfs* Total recap of the 4th Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. That book was like a major "What the?" book. 3 of the sisters had sex. Little Carmen did not. Interesting. *raises an eyebrow*

Whoa, off topic. I just went on talking about sex in books. Yeah, this is totally not an "introduction" unless everyone happens to be nine and don't know what sex is.

AAAAAAAAAHH! Rambling me.

Shrink: Now, what is your problem?
Me: I ramble a lot. I start talking about one topic then go straight to another. Like I'll be talking about chickens, and then jokes come into my mind. And then, I start talking about Harry Potter. And then boom, I start talking about rambling. Speaking of rambling, have you ever watched Rambo? I haven't truthfully. But I know a 7-year-old who has watched the movie. I babysit him. I don't think violence and kids should mix. It is quite deadly. When it comes to explosives for kids, the only explosive should be a quite deadly fart. Yes, that topic is another thing that is a fan of the kids I babysit. I've gotten really good at holding my breath. But I'm a horrible swimmer. See, I have this problem. I ramble.

And so, the shrink bursts into flames. The End

Now, you guys don't have to reply to anything I've just said in that paragraph. Moral of the story: Never feed an iguana strawberry yogurt.

*slaps head*

GAHAHAHA. You always make me actually LOL. :) Especially the shrink bursting into flames. Brilliant.

And I know what you mean about the fourth Sisterhood book. Oh, my gosh. It annoyed me so much. I loved the first three, and then the fourth one was like ... O_O The whole thing was just everyone (except Carmen) having sex!

(view spoiler)

Thanks for the support, Brigid. Us (more like me), crazy people, need all the support we can get. And I hope that this laughing thing is laughing with me and not at me. Lol. Because...that wouldn't be nice. Jk. Jk.

I totally agree. Since that book, Carmen has become my favorite even though I used to like Lena. Oh, pure Carmen, lol.

It's like the author was thinking, "What does becoming an adult mean to me? Answer: Having sex." Bahaha. I still think I might read the 5th one though.

message 426: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) Whoops, something went wrong with my comment. It was in italics. And I was confused. I deleted it and just copied and pasted the comment in a new one. *awkward*

Yesh, let us find out how many more times sex is performed. Lol. Performed. Where do I come up with these things. *shudders*

message 427: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
Oh well now my comment looks weird and out of place, so I'm going to delete it. *deletes* All I said was––yes, I think I will read the 5th one too. Just because I want to know what happens to everyone.

lol. SEX PERFORMAAAANCE. O_o *shields eyes*

message 428: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 240 comments I loved Shiver, and Darkest Powers, and Darkness Rising, and the MI books. And I wouldn't really count Darkest Powers or Darkness Rising as Dark Romance.

message 429: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) Yeah, I wouldn't count the Darkest Powers as Dark Romance either because it was more focused really on the real story plot. I mean, sure, she was choosing between boys. But I doubt that's the real story of the entire series. It's a side plot. Twilight, on the other hand, is a dark romance novel.

message 430: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
Yeah, but the guys in Darkest Powers are somewhat dangerous. Of course, the girl's also kinda dangerous so it sorta evens out.

message 431: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 240 comments I don't think that Simon's dangerous at all :P And she's not interested in Derek until the third book. Soooo I don't think it's a dark romance :D

message 432: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
Uh, she is too interested in him like ... the whole time. It's just very subtle. Like, through most of the first book I didn't get it, but towards the end I was like, "Oh wait ... I think she likes him. Meh heh." Which is cool, because it's a lot more realistic. And I like how she doesn't, you know, automatically go for the hot guy. Although the hot guy is still an option.

message 433: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 240 comments But . . . aren't they both kinda hot? Well. At least, Derek loses his acne and always had muscles :P

message 434: by Picture (new)

Picture Perfect (picturesperfect) How do you know, Seth? Bahaha. Truly, I've always imagined Derek as a really hairy adolescent teenager with a gruff voice. I don't find that considerably hot. Well, Chloe likes him.

message 435: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
I always pictured Derek kind of ugly ... lol. I know as it goes along she starts saying he looks better, but I just interpreted that to mean that she was slowly starting to like him more––not that he necessarily had improved all that much. Anyway, he's just a sweet guy. Which is why I like him.

She talks about how he's not attractive because he's fat (but she later finds out he's super muscley o.o) and has acne. But she also talks about how his acne goes away, soo . . . yeah.

Oh...I thought you kind of pictured it in your head like that. I'm really bad at picturing characters. Derek still is pretty harry in my head.
