Those books aren't exactly controversial, but almost (if not every one of them) contain an element or two that is. It's often only in background, but if one don't want to read "hardcore taboo" I think it would do nicely...
For example:
Outlander - rape (m/m)
Dragonfly in Amber - another rape (m/f), pedofilia, secret black magic cult (does it count to spirituality?), also a large part of the book regards French and Scottish politics
Voyager - bigamy, very intresting (and controversial) catholic priest, pedofilia once again
Drums of Autumn - guess what? rape (m/f), euthanasia (I'm not sure if it was in this one, though)
The Fiery Cross - (I'll have to reread it soon, but it was in this one I think...) bigamy
A Breath of Snow and Ashes - (I think it was in this one...) incest
There's probably more, but I'll have to rerad it to refresh my memory.

BTW, i wish i had been a fly on the wall when you asked the librarian about finding the books for the challenge. That would have been hilarious.

It was, heh. And I really tried not to laugh... not succeeded, though. It helped when I explained to her why I'm intrested in those themes and she was intrigued by the challenges idea. She helped me quite a lot, too, mostly with classic literature (which I'm not overly familiar with). I only took notes at this time - I want to be able to cross challenge so I'll need to have as many titles as possible to choose from.

Hey, Rossy, sorry haven't checked this thread for a while .... oops! It was on pollution and greenhouse gas emissions :)

I might join this, the political ones are throwing me as they are not my cup of tea but the rest are very do-able. Need to contemplate list.
Start date is our choice and end date is 6 months from that?

I think there are a few fiction-suspense that have political characters. For example, am going to read the first book in the I-team series, Extreme Exposure.
Yes, the ending date is 6 months from your starting date.

i can recommend a couple of good NF about presidents if anyone is interested

Very nice. I actually have that series in Mt. TBR. :)

Then perhaps you can also join me in the dare for this series. I have to read it too, i just started on the first book today.

a good book about a president - Tried by War : Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief - its about Lincoln during the Civil War and why he made the decisions he did

I just finished a book about an Amish Midwife and a large portion of the book is centered around a political conflict of whether or not midwives without proper state certification are allowable in the Amish communities (Amish midwives don't have the necessary 'English' education to get the certification).
Would this be allowable for the Political section?
