Annvelwis | 671 comments For those who (will) participate in the Outlander reading dare...
Those books aren't exactly controversial, but almost (if not every one of them) contain an element or two that is. It's often only in background, but if one don't want to read "hardcore taboo" I think it would do nicely...

For example:
Outlander - rape (m/m)
Dragonfly in Amber - another rape (m/f), pedofilia, secret black magic cult (does it count to spirituality?), also a large part of the book regards French and Scottish politics
Voyager - bigamy, very intresting (and controversial) catholic priest, pedofilia once again
Drums of Autumn - guess what? rape (m/f), euthanasia (I'm not sure if it was in this one, though)
The Fiery Cross - (I'll have to reread it soon, but it was in this one I think...) bigamy
A Breath of Snow and Ashes - (I think it was in this one...) incest

There's probably more, but I'll have to rerad it to refresh my memory.

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Great recs, Annvelwis! They seem to fit the categories very nicely.

BTW, i wish i had been a fly on the wall when you asked the librarian about finding the books for the challenge. That would have been hilarious.

Annvelwis | 671 comments Post in another thread: People's reaction is especially funny. My very nice and very catholic librarian actually crossed herself(!) when I asked if she can help me find some fiction with rape, incest, abortion or euthanasia... I didn't expect that, hah.

It was, heh. And I really tried not to laugh... not succeeded, though. It helped when I explained to her why I'm intrested in those themes and she was intrigued by the challenges idea. She helped me quite a lot, too, mostly with classic literature (which I'm not overly familiar with). I only took notes at this time - I want to be able to cross challenge so I'll need to have as many titles as possible to choose from.

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments if you don't want "hide the vienna sausage books", look for ones which are labelled M/F/M - the guys get it on with the girls, but not with themselves...ditto with F/M/F and F/F/M :) but thanks for the laugh

Adrienne So far I'm really enjoying this challenge, and have read two books which although cover similar topics couldn't be more different. I read the Delta of Venus by Anaïs Nin which is a collection of short stories for book 1 in my 'other' section, part way through I was considering moving it to 'sexuality' but as it has stories that include, amongst other things, incest and drug taking I decided to leave it where it was. I'm currrently reading Peyton Place by Grace Metalious which was banned in the fifties when it was first published and I'm really enjoying it, can understand why it was banned way back then. I've had this book on loan from the library for some time and would probably have taken it back unread had it not been for this challenge, I'm soooooo glad I didn't.

I might join this, the political ones are throwing me as they are not my cup of tea but the rest are very do-able. Need to contemplate list.

Start date is our choice and end date is 6 months from that?

I think there are a few fiction-suspense that have political characters. For example, am going to read the first book in the I-team series, Extreme Exposure.

Yes, the ending date is 6 months from your starting date.

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i have my moments...I also picked up Lincoln and His Admirals but I haven't read it yet...i'm on a bit of a NF Kick right now...lol! I can't think of many fiction that feature politicians - that just doesn't sound too romantic ;)

message 69: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments I need a little romance in order to read about politicians. I'm awed that you would want to read these books for pleasure.LOL

message 70: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments not pleasure...a need to stop my brain from turning to mush...

message 71: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Ah, i normally go for a very dramatic book that might make me cry, that brings a roller-coaster of emotions instead.

message 72: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments well, i do that too...but i needs to read something edumacational sumtymes

message 73: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments LOL! I stopped reading educational books the day i finished with my last college classes. I swear i wanted to throw the books out right in the garbage can the minute i walked out of my last class.

message 74: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments maybe that's why...i'm still in school...lol! or maybe it is the "recommended reading" list that the navy has, or maybe i'm just psycho...i'm going to go with the latter of the three

N.L. Riviezzo (nlriviezzo) For the Political -

I just finished a book about an Amish Midwife and a large portion of the book is centered around a political conflict of whether or not midwives without proper state certification are allowable in the Amish communities (Amish midwives don't have the necessary 'English' education to get the certification).

Would this be allowable for the Political section?

message 78: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments That would be Amish politics. Certifications are granted and recognize governmentally, i think.

message 79: by N.L. (new)

N.L. Riviezzo (nlriviezzo) So it is usable? :)
